I always heard that sound doesn't travel in space.

You're completely right, as space is a vacuum, there are no molecules to carry the sound wave, so you wouldn't be able to hear it. However, the physics behind gravitational waves are very similar to sound waves and scientists use a lot of the same terms when talking about them, which is why we use them here. Hope this helps

What a wonderful episode! Hearing about NIc's evidence brilliant work ethic and desire to follow his passion along, especially after going back to start a new PhD is amazing. Additionally, listening to Nic explain that people in his earlier years did not tell him that he couldn't do something but rather taking the extra time to help him shows how valuable enabling people to pursue exactly what they want, not matter of their impairments. Thanks for this one team.

General Relativity predicts dilation not singularities. In the 1939 journal "Annals of Mathematics" Einstein wrote - "The essential result of this investigation is a clear understanding as to why the Schwarzchild singularities (Schwarzchild was the first to raise the issue of General Relativity predicting singularities) do not exist in physical reality. Although the theory given here treats only clusters (star clusters) whose particles move along circular paths it does seem to be subject to reasonable doubt that more general cases will have analogous results. The Schwarzchild singularities do not appear for the reason that matter cannot be concentrated arbitrarily. And this is due to the fact that otherwise the constituting particles would reach the velocity of light." He was referring to the phenomenon of dilation (sometimes called gamma or y) mass that is dilated is smeared through spacetime relative to an outside observer. It's the phenomenon behind the phrase "mass becomes infinite at the speed of light". Time dilation is one aspect of dilation. Even mass that exists at 75% light speed is partially dilated. Dilation will occur wherever there is an astronomical quantity of mass because high mass means high momentum. Dilation is the original and correct explanation for why we cannot see light from the galactic center. It can be shown mathematically that the mass at the center of our own galaxy must be dilated. In other words that mass is all around us. Sound familiar? This is the explanation for dark matter. The "missing mass" is dilated mass. Dilation does not occur in galaxies with very, very low mass because they do not have enough mass in their centers to achieve relativistic velocities. It has recently been confirmed in 5 very, very low mass galaxies to show no signs of dark matter. What we see in modern astronomy has been known since 1925. This is when the existence of galaxies was confirmed. It was clear that there should be an astronomical quantity of light emanating from our galactic center. It wasn't until the 1960's when television and movies started to popularize singularities that the concept gradually became mainstream.

Please do not use the 2d elastic sheet analogy for 4d spacetime to demonstrate geometrical curvature and motion along geodesic paths. It's just wrong on so many levels! Actual spacetime does not distort/warp into an extra dimension as the 2d sheet is doing in those demonstrations... 😬😵

Thanks for your comment, we love receiving feedback. You're absolutely right that the sheet analogy is not perfect but we feel it's a good starting point for someone to understand how spacetime behaves. As with any analogy in physics, you can only take it so far before it is no longer accurate.

Excellent episode as always and great to meet Adam too, what a coup for the team! Susanna asked for ideas for space missions so I thought I would like a Stealth satellite painted in Vanta black to avoid detection in the visible spectrum but which also has some ingenious cooling system to cater for the non visual spectrum too. Ground breaking optics, a robotic arm to allow for satellite capture or servicing and a dual fuel system to allow for fast transits when required but maybe ion thrusters for station keeping.
