Wow this one hits. Earlier this year I tried to take my life, and by a literal miracle that gun didn’t work. Since then I’ve seen a lot of real green grass and figurative green grass I’m so thankful the Lord kept me around for. And it makes my heart ache for those who don’t. Mental health amongst the cowboy/ag community is tough but songs like this and conversations like the ones happening on the Wild Courage podcast are doing amazing things to keep more cowboys around. Thank you Sam for the beautiful song and message. God bless.

Man, I love this song. It reminds me of my dad. He wasn't a cowboy but he smoked Marlboro cigs and was my hero. One tough son of a bitch but with a heart of gold. Thank you for this. I'm an Okie but he came from the Chicago streets. He was known as the Chicago OX when he was in high-school in Topeka KS. I miss him everyday.

Bless you Mr. McMahan for writing this song. The Ol' Double Diamond song magically helped myself and several of my Brothers in Arms heal and get ready to leave our profession of arms and move on to our civilian lives. You are a healer in your songs. We were doing an outdoor adventure on the LBJ Ranch outside Fredricksburg, Texas several years back and a phenomenal musician and Marine brother (Chuck Hawthorne) played this song as we were sitting by the fire one evening. He timed it perfectly and for an audience that needed its wisdom desperately. You see...we were all being medically retired from the military (after wounds and combat injuries) and were facing some serious transition in our lives. This song was the perfect medicine to help us know that change is about us at all times and that we could weather it...especially with the skills we picked up from being Warriors. We all had fear for our new lives in a world we didn't really know about. Your song allayed our fears and gave us confidence to move forward with the changes we were about to experience. We all sat in awe as Chuck played this good medicine (and, he gave you credit of course) and you could feel a collective sigh of relief from us all when it was over. It was balm for worried souls. I was blessed to do some cowboying in my high school and college days before a long career in the Army. That made the song even more impactful on me. Moreover, a long time cowboy friend of Chuck and I, was passing away from cancer. We had the honor and privilege to help that man get to green and deep pastures. He asked that Chuck play your song at his celebration of life - it was his favorite. Chuck beautifully played it shortly before we shot that amazing cowboy's ashes out of an old Spanish Degüello Cannon into the west pasture on the Windy Hill Ranch in central Texas. Your song had the many attendees that were in this cowboy's life in tears and happiness. He left the "Ol' Double Diamond" for the glorious ranch in the sky. So, myself and many others are deeply grateful for such a wonderful song that imparts a beautiful message and deep wisdom! I will forever be in yours and Chuck Hawthorne's debt for your beautiful work of art. You are both blessings for so many! P.S. Dusty Vaquero - many thanks for posting this with Gary McMahan (a national treasure). If you want to get another phenomenal artist on your channel...give Chuck Hawthorne a ring. He is as stand-up a human, Combat Marine, songwriter, and musician as you can find.

I genuinely appreciate this side of Country/Folk musicians. I call most Modern Country "Bubblegum Country" because most of these jackasses sound like Taylor Swift trying to do an accent. This is what the genre is all about.
