This lady's testimony is largely incoherent and much of it based on second-hand hearsay. For example, at 28:27 she claims 'Mangena was killed by an RPG' and that 'Rhodesians did not use RPGs' and then says 'maybe one group (of Rhodesians)'. Mangena died soon after receiving serious wounds when the landrover he was travelling in detonated a TM46 land mine laid by Sgt. P Cripps of B Squadron, Rhodesian SAS. No RPG 7 was ever fired at or near Mangena in this incident. Also, prior to this event, on the 24th June 1978, as part of Operation Elbow, 12 members of B Sqd. RhSAS had ambushed 3 ZIL trucks carrying ZIPRA men and supplies south between Kabanga Mission and Simani Mine in Zambia's Southern Province. During this action two RPG 7 launchers which had been brought into Zambia by the RhSAS were used to fire at least 3 rockets during the ambush, mainly to disable the trucks. This ambush resulted in at least 69 ZIPRA dead. Contrary to the testimony above, the use of captured RPG7 launchers was quite widespread within the Rhodesian forces where tactically appropriate and had been for some years. Soon after this event the main RhSAS ambush party was airlifted back to Rhodesia but a small mine-laying team under Sgt P. Cripps remained behind and was flown by helicopter further north along the raod towards Kabanga Mission where his team proceeded to lay a landmine in this road. Three days after the main ambush, a ZIPRA reaction party which included Mangena, passed over this mine travelling south without it detonating. However upon their return northwards along the same road, the second of the two landrovers, containing Mangena, detonated this mine resulting in 3 fatalities which included himself. Based on subsequent intercepts of Zambian Army radio traffic, it became known that a number of senior ZIPRA commanders were among the deceased. As such, three RhAF helicopters again bearing members of B Sqd. RhSAS, incuding its commander Cpt. Willis, were dispatched to the explosion site in the hope of recovering the dead commanders, largely for propoganda purposes. But they were too late as the dead and injured had been or were being cleared. The account of this event by Retired ZDF Lt. Col. Stanford Moyo (ex-ZIPRA Commander, Chimernga name Cde. Lloyd Zvananewako or Mabhikwa) confirms the above events and facts. And he should know, he was a surviving passenger on the landrover that detonated the mine and subsequently held Mangena's head as the latter died soon after.

Really enjoyed this one. The discussion had me thinking on state craft and state formation. I think a large part of our problems is that in 1980, we had a bunch of people who had no ministerial experience suddenly inheriting a system and having to run it. SA had a soft landing due to their GNU which was constitutionally mandated (we also had RG and they had Mandela 😅). Even in opposition circles, it’s a bit hard to see how it’ll all work out WHEN ZANU is out of power. Only NC has ministerial and cabinet experience of those remaining and who would potentially be in his cabinet. It’ll be interesting to see how Botswana shapes up vis-à-vis the arguments this author made given how they have a lot of new brooms there as well and a president who was never in cabinet

Mugabe educated his people, now 80% educated people are without jobs or poorly paid because of the socialistic goals of ZANU PF now EFF want to go the same route. A piece of paper in Agriculture doesnt make you a farmer, its growing up in this environment. learning from you Parent farmers the hard way so its in your blood. 70 % of farm ers yaken away or even bought by the Governement here in RSA and handed to the local blacks have been stripped of anything and everything and left derelict wshile they squat and ask for more money. Its a Joke that only fools will be fall for. No longer Boetie Malema, the GNU will make the land productive and build on the Black farmer development programme. Look how Zambia and Mozambique have benefitted from the white farmers Mugabe chucked off their land, Now ZANU wants them back. Facts Guys, Facts. My Brother in Law manages 12 farms for a Black businessman in Zambia, why because he doesnt trust his own people have it to build a farm and not wreck it.......Check it out, its happeneing everywhere. Join hands and build but stealing from economic and agricultural producers to hand to idiots is not only narrow minded but a political tool to start socialism FACT.

That is indeed part of the story. Britain and the USA should they have chosen to would have been able to do it but a fairly large cost. Thus for the most part it was a non starter. What you also forget to see with the history of sanctions is that they are only instituted when a full on war is either unfeasable or costly in a way. I am inclined to believe Wilson was privately sympathetic to Rhodesia and possible said to Ian that he couldn't do much militarily if he wanted to. That is plausible. However Ian was probably shrewd enough to see this as well.
