I recently built a pauper Heiko yamazaki, the general deck. Where I built it around lots of etb artifacts, artifacts that can Sac themselves and that I can bring back and so on, I've got universal solvent and goblin firebomb in there and I cam consistently bring them back to destroy any permanent over and over. I was able to beat my friends new eldrazi precon with it in a 2 out of 3 normal commander format

Have you ever seen a Temur Savertooth deck show up? I’d like to find out if anyone has found success with it since I feel like I just cooked super hard despite it literally just being a bunch of etb land search etb +1 counters etb token gen a few other useful etbs like removal, and a few big high cost payoff cards for late game once I’ve spammed out like 30 lands, like, if I don’t get hit by a counterspell I can haze frog the whole table every turn

For the sticker sheet deck, what other 5 sheets do you use to fill out the 10 sheets to randomly select from? Did the rules change since this video was uploaded and when this was uploaded, only 5 sheets were needed in the sticker deck?

So I've never before seen a sacrifice ability be able to be double dipped as a cost of a card. It's one or the other. Dargo requires a sacrifice, Lotus requires a sacrifice. Dargo doesn't say for each card sacrificed this turn he costs less. You have to specifically select the card to sacrifice as a cost. Sacrifice happens immediately and is faster than instant speed ie you can not respond to a sacrifice... so not sure how this first interaction in the video is supposed to work already. Unless I'm playing with old rules.

I played Third Path Iconoclast in this tournament, but I like mixing it up a lot. I've played Gretchen, Malcolm/Kediss, Satyr Enchanter, Lorehold Apprentice, and others in events previously. The format is so wide open to brewing that I love finding new decks all the time. A friend of mine has a Guttersnipe deck in paper, and it can really stack up the damage! I don't see it much as the commander in cPDH, but it shows up a lot as another pinger in spells-matters decks. I've seen people run it with Dragon's Approaches, too, for a huge amount of burn each turn.

I was the Abdel / Red player in this open! One thing that doesn't get shown as clearly here is the controlling power of the deck while it's digging for its combo pieces. Street Urchin presents a board lock to a lot of combo decks, which makes this really a win-last style of Abdel. Unfortunately, the 90 minute round timer forces the Abdel / Red player to make more aggressive plays in search of a combo win within time, whereas outside of tournament play the deck has more freedom to play it slow and control the board. The quote I think best encapsulates the deck is "A deck that makes draw go scary." Obviously, the deck folds to pressure from the stack, and it sometimes struggles in the early game finding the necessary mana and cantrip rocks. But it applies really solid anti-combo pressure late game, which is why I've fallen in love with the deck.
@ankylosaurmtg4 ай бұрын
Thanks so much for your comment, and for your insight into the deck! I definitely could have spent a little more time talking about Street Urchin (my favorite background) and how it keeps the board under control by providing constant pressure to everyone's combo-piece creatures. It's a key part of the deck for sure, and I appreciate you bringing it up. I'm excited to see how the deck develops going forward, especially with MH3 coming so soon!

Do you think REB and Pyroblast should be auto-included in any competitive list with red? It seems to me they should, so many strong lists from tournaments seem to have blue generals, blue blink spells or Freed from the Real in some form, not to mention all the blue counters to protect those spells. Would you consider running cards like Ardent Elementalist and Revolutionist if you were playing Rakdos or Naya (no blue) to recur these blasts? Like you said, meaningful stack interaction outside of blue is hard to find, and as narrow as the red blasts are I feel they MIGHT warrant it. Or am I placing to much value on them? Genuinely curious and value your opinion, also I appreciate this might be more of a metagame call.
@ankylosaurmtg4 ай бұрын
I generally include the Blasts when I'm building competitive red-based decks without blue in them, and especially if I have ways to cash them in for extra cards in pods where they do nothing -- things like Demand Answers or Thrill of Possibility are really helpful here. I don't know that I'd go as far as running Ardent Elementalist effects just for recurring the Blasts, but I've run Elementalist in my spell-heavy Boros Lorehold Apprentice deck and been pretty happy with it. The Blasts are obviously narrow -- only hitting blue spells/permanents -- but blue is a large chunk of the competitive meta, and the Blasts are the most efficient at what they do, so it's a trade-off that I think favors running at least one Blast, and maybe both depending on the decks you expect/whether or not you can get value from casting spells in your deck (lots of pinger creatures, for instance, makes their stock go up as well). Thanks for the comment!

@ankylosaurmtg4 ай бұрын
Thanks so much! There unfortunately isn't anything like Skullcrack or Sulfuric Vortex in the format to shut off lifegain altogether. The two best plans I can think of to circumvent people gaining life are either to go infinite with a combo of some kind, or get them with commander damage. But if you let me know what sorts of decks you're playing, I might be able to come up with other solutions, too!

Great video! I started building my deck before watching, and I was sucked into Enchantment creatures as cantrips. What do you think of the following: Bearer of Memory, Eiganjo Exemplar, Fang of Shigeki, Glory Bearers, Golden-Tail Disciple, Greater Tanuki, Harvestguard Alseids (some fun shenanigans with this one), Hopeful Eidolon, Humbler of Mortals, Jukai Preserver, Leafcrown Dryad, Lucent Liminid, Nyxborn Courser, Oakheart Dryads, Observant Alseid, Spirited Companion (lol 2 cards) ... anyhoo sorry for the card name spam, just wondering your thoughts :)
@ankylosaurmtg5 ай бұрын
I had a number of those creatures in my earlier iterations of the deck -- Fang of Shigeki, Hopeful Eidolon, Spirited Companion, etc. -- but eventually wound up trimming back on them in favor of spells to either protect the commander, or removal like Last Breath or Master's Rebuke to make sure I could take out something like a turn-2 Malcolm or an untapper out of Gretchen. I tuned the list to deal with the most popular competitive Pauper EDH commanders as best I could, but if your playgroup isn't as focused on tournament-level PDH, tacking "draw a card" onto your creatures is great! And you can definitely cut some of the spike-ier cards for a more robust creature-base in that case. Thanks for the comment!

Alright I need to know. Why fleshformer for the 5c deck as commander. Aren’t other creatures like the 5c artifact creatures more efficient and more castable? Maybe I’m missing something obvious…. Help me out. Great breakdown video.
@ankylosaurmtg5 ай бұрын
My understanding is, the deck needs a 5-color commander primarily for the color identity, and often won't bother casting the commander at all during the course of a game. But there are certain lines (for instance, making infinite mana with Ilysian Caryatid and Freed from the Real) where you can activate Fleshformer enough times to kill every creature your opponents control, and then take out one player with commander damage now that your Fleshformer is enormous. Plus if you have WUBRG lying around, you can always activate to shoot down a Malcolm or something, which isn't nothing.

@@ankylosaurmtg just realized the deck also plays path of ancestry so being a human probably also has minor upside…?

During the even i was able to empty the warrens to make 20 11s and in a different game grapeshot for 11 all pointing at my opponents face killing him and clearing the board at the same time. I'm totally not into pedh, but i'm a long time commander player and the deck tech and the optimized approach with "budget" cards is really cool here. This decks shows one thing really well, if you bring this - a well built, synergistic budget deck - to a normal edh table, people will fear you and this because interaction is just a key point in edh. Most decks just play fancy big cards and noninteraction or low synergy - they all end up playing out the same with no real flavour.
@ankylosaurmtg5 ай бұрын
Thank you! I built a version of Erinis/Street Urchin a couple years ago that included rares and was intended to be played in normal EDH pods, but it was perhaps a little too oppressive for the tables I usually played at. I may do a video on that list at some point, though -- if you don't mind potentially becoming archenemy, it's a strong deck that does a good job of controlling the table.
@SilentGe425 ай бұрын
@@ankylosaurmtg I totally agree on the opressiveness of the deck, but if you bring this "budget" deck at a high power table (not cedh) you can prabably be really relevant even on a budget build. As you said, i would avoid playing this pair at a random power table.
@ankylosaurmtg5 ай бұрын
I'm sure you're right. I did play a (much less refined) version of this deck at a regular EDH table once, and while I died to a Kaldra Compleat (indestructible too strong!), the deck did hold its own and even take out the other two players in the pod.
