Commentaire de Zwarg (de la version supprimée - 3 août 2024, 15h45 heure française) "Although the rpm speed is already high, I think it is still not high enough. The announcer sounds very unnatural, and the arrangement comes out transposed down by two full tones: The original score ends in G and your transfer in E-flat. One tone higher (final chord F) it sounds more convincing to me and it still in comfortable brass-band keys (the opening even more so: F minor instead of E-flat minor). But of course that is just my subjective impression, I have no proof either way. And I agree that the speed for the pitch I prefer is rather absurd at circa 98.5 rpm - but OTOH I have an Odeon recorded in Vienna in 1906 that runs, without much room for doubt, at 103 rpm! This suggestion to try raising the pitch/speed by a full tone BTW extends to your other recent Odeon postings (Nice-Station and Marie Tudor) that all have the same cavernous-sounding announcements and somehow muffled and sluggish sound."

I think this was recorded in 1904/5 rather than 1903.
@misstokiАй бұрын
@@lutzlupe2966 In my opinion it was recorded before St-Louis' exposition of 1904 since "St-Louis 1904" is missing on label. I have found a document mentioning that Frank Capps the recording engineer had made recording expedition in Europe including in Russia and many European cities. Therefore I had deducted as 1903 the date of recording. However it's still yet to be confirmed for the recording engineer 's identity due to the lack of data.
@misstokiАй бұрын
Also the embossed numbers styling is typical as I found in American discs (mx ca. 1300-1600 for take 1) recorded in 1903 (same for Japanese Columbia discs 2000-ca.2367 which was recorded between April to July 1903 at Tokyo)
@lutzlupe2966Ай бұрын
@@misstoki As far as I know, Columbia indeed recorded in Berlin and Peterburg for the first time in late 1902/early 1903. In each city they reached about 200 sides. These were published under a special European label, whereas the discs from their second visit to Europe at the end of 1903 already bore "black and silver" labels in various versions. Since I've never seen any French Columbia displaying the first design, I conclude that they only started on their second tour. Assuming a similar amount as on the first occations (50000 - approx, 50200) matrix number 50420 would fit into a second (1904) or even third visit to Paris.
@martinbryan3716Ай бұрын
It would be interesting to know when Paris Columbias stopped using the spoken announcement. Surely they were not announced as late as 1905 (as you suggest)....but who knows?
@misstokiАй бұрын
@@martinbryan3716 I ignore when for Columbia due to lack of data. However this kind of spoken intro is the same type as Odeon discs and were still used even in April 1906 for Odéon using the format "[Title], chanté par [interprets], Disque Odéon" or variants ("Disque Odéon" in spoken intro no longer appears starting May 1906 recordings and afterwards and recordings without spoken intro appeared more often. However Adolphe Bérard still used spoken intro even in 1913)

Hello, Thanks. Please note that my older videos has bad transfer method (formerly I used the noise reduction but I stopped because it destroys the sound fidelity), sometimes the transfer speed is incorrect. Progressively, I delete my older videos then reupload with better transfer method. For the speed rotation, I use the book of Chris Zwarg "Speeds & Keys". If the matrix is missing, I use the sound spectrometry for adjust the speed through Audacity.

@@misstoki well it’s still better than my transfers. I don’t have very good equipment and is very bad with technology. But i’m 15, from Sweden and collects 78s too. Mostly the old ones, especially ”bondkomik” (popular form of comic in Sweden 1890-1920). But i’m doing my best and is eager to learn.

For the 25 cm, yes. There are even older recordings for 17 cm, the oldest that I saw is Berliner Gramophone Gy515, played by TROCADERO ORCHESTRA (JACQUES JACOBS), recorded at London on 1898.09.07 Wed

Indeed yes for me. I know that some users will find that the pitch is too high but this orchestra used A=452 Hz (1/4 tone higher than A440). For your information, I bought a 27 cm Odeon Record at Amsterdam of the same music recorded ca. Feb 1904 at London (also A452).

Is their approach to finding the right speed really that the piano was set to 452Hz of British military music?
@misstoki3 ай бұрын
I have recently acquired the book of Chris Zwarg "Speeds & Keys". All piano recordings at London before 20 October 1904 were pitched at 452 Hz and changed to 435 Hz with Melba recordings and thereafter. However, Orchestra accomp still used A=452 until late September 1906 for Gramophone/Zonophone. Generally, adjacent matrix numbers have nearly the same speed which have evidenced that piano used 435 Hz but 452 Hz for Orchestra and Military bands. Military bands still used A=452 Hz in 1920s.
