The terms "male" and "female" in Balinese gamelan is in reference to the tunings of the instruments, I believe. Each instrument type has one that is tuned lightly sharper than the other (or tuned "smaller," which is the equivalent in Balinese of saying "higher"). This pitch variation is designed to cause a slight dissonance in the form of a beating wave-like pattern, called "ombak." There is a desired number of waves in a second (I believe around 10). So each set of keys is tuned slightly differently depending on the octave to achieve the same numbers of waves. The interlocking parts for kotekan are named "polos" and "sangsih." Polos typically plays on-the-beat, whereas sangsih usually plays syncopated.

An easier way to remember this is to make the IV chord of any key minor. The IV of Cm is Ab, hence Abm.

It's l l s. s. You can hear this because if you listen carefully you can just about if you're really attentive tell that that's what it clearly is by every measurement you could possibly use unless you considered time immaterial which renders the whole argument useless.

I have recently discovered Judee despite having a cover of The Kiss on a cd I own and not realising it. I am uplifted and sad all at once. Her story has to be one of the most heartbreaking I have ever heard. It's such a shame that the light in her went out. Such beautiful music....😢❤
