Try local art supply store or Amazon or any oriental art stores (most importantly get one hard hair and one soft hair so that you can test out the different strokes)

Holding the brush helps with maintaining a steady hand which is important in terms of long term painting skill improvement, it also helps to maintain calmness in terms of applying a stroke, I find this way of holding a calligraphy brush very elegant in terms of applying a brush stroke esp. when the artist is in a standing position when creating a large scale painting. I think it is also a long cherished traditional way of holding the bamboo brush which is fun to learn as well. hope it helps!

Anita, is that regular watercolor paper? I’m having a hard time with Xuan..I’ve tried a raw double Xuan and a semi-sized Xuan..both, I had a very hard time controlling the ink/paint/water. I even attempted, using my tiny rat whisker brush, the eye..it STILL spread much too big, even after I tapped what seemed like most of the ink, on a paper towel. I’m about to attempt a sized Xuan I have…fingers crossed! Thank you For this! My squirrel is also mostly grey, with some tinges of black & brown…

Hi elaineg60, Sorry for the delay. To answer your question - Double Xuan is usually what I use with my beginner students in my class. However, I would also recommend using watercolor paper if you are having a hard time in the beginning and gradually try Xuan paper again once you have master the brush control. Make sure you dry the brush if it is dripping water, it should be too wet nor dry either. Hope it helps! Happy painting!

there was something really nice I learned just now, it is way more comfortable to draw and paint holding pens, pencils, and brushes like that. I learned something more than just what was given, amazing, and it's very informative, love it.

To answer your questions- I’m using rice paper aka Xuan paper (single layer) in this tutorial.

Yes, i use both Chinese minerals and watercolor as my color and sumi-e ink/ Chinese calligraphy ink as black on my paintings. The brushes can be purchased at local art supply stores ( ask about calligraphy/ bamboo brushes) make sure you get different sizes ( 2 hard hair brushes and 2 soft hair brushes are ideal) hope this helps!

Wow this is interesting, you start with a partial form and the lines are offset to complete a segment. As opposed to the construction of lines to form the sum of the shapes and form. Thus the shapes come first and not the lines seem apparent to my understanding. May i ask is this how chinese paintings are traditionally formed or just a personal style? Also instead of building up the tones, you start off with the darkest first, lighter tones are built around that? I am trying to wrap my head around the differences. Its totally opposite from most western watercolours. Beautiful nonetheless. Bravo

Thank you Ray for your kind comment. I studied art from both east and western education so although the style contains a lot of traditional techniques, I have mixed in a lot of western painting techniques as well.
