Anita, is that regular watercolor paper? I’m having a hard time with Xuan..I’ve tried a raw double Xuan and a semi-sized Xuan..both, I had a very hard time controlling the ink/paint/water. I even attempted, using my tiny rat whisker brush, the eye..it STILL spread much too big, even after I tapped what seemed like most of the ink, on a paper towel. I’m about to attempt a sized Xuan I have…fingers crossed! Thank you For this! My squirrel is also mostly grey, with some tinges of black & brown…

Hi elaineg60, Sorry for the delay. To answer your question - Double Xuan is usually what I use with my beginner students in my class. However, I would also recommend using watercolor paper if you are having a hard time in the beginning and gradually try Xuan paper again once you have master the brush control. Make sure you dry the brush if it is dripping water, it should be too wet nor dry either. Hope it helps! Happy painting!

Hi Joy Brush, I'm looking for this exactly brush (plastic body, large goat hair brush) but couldn't find it online. Would you mind telling me the length of the brush from the tip of the hair to where it meets the handle? Thank you for your tutorial. I did not think of loading the brush with different colors for one stroke blending effect before. Awesome!

Deserves praise for skill and training ability not often found online. Please explain though why first stroke and inks video which I loved does not show reference here as you instruct? Head...stroke. Ears...same. So on? Thank you very much.

Hi The M Cave, I'm glad you enjoyed the video. I am not too sure if I'm understanding your question correctly, but let me try to explain the strokes of head and ears a little better - The stroke we used on head and ears are almost the same. First, make sure you create a gradient on your brush. Next, push down the brush starting from tip of brush to bottom of brush. (Notice the tip of a chinese brush is very small and narrow and the stroke gets bigger/wider as you apply force and push the brush down on paper; meantime the bottom of the brush also contains more water content which gives the head a little furry and melting effects) The only difference between ear stroke and head stroke is that we are using center brush position for the ear and pushing it down lightly (so we don't apply too much paint and we are keeping it small) For the Head stroke, we begin by using center position and the tip of the brush and then gradually push down the brush and it's kinda similar a side stroke at this point. The shape of head and ear are almost the same as you may have already noticed.
