Fella that came to your aid was the guy I want coming to my plane crash. Calm, asked the right questions, knew what to do, and what not to do. Didn't say OMG even once. 👍

That engine sounded great after the crash. But horrible when you took off and you took off anyway.

Thank you for posting this. It’s informative to see how the Aerolite behaves in Departure from controlled flight. If you do get it flying or get another one. Consider a yaw string on the windscreen. Helps a lot to remind you to keep your feet working. Especially in some of the seats these things have that dampen your seat of pants feel due to being fabric slings and such.

Why did he make that turn at the end even though he had a clear path to land right in front of him?
@innocentbystander37983 күн бұрын
He didn't. The right wing stalled and the acft rolled to the right, as physics demanded.
@SCOHEN250K3 күн бұрын
@@innocentbystander3798 How do you know when he lost control? Can we assume he had some control meaning he intended to turn right before exceeding the critical bank angle for his speed?
@innocentbystander37982 күн бұрын
@@SCOHEN250K Haha - can we assume he simply flew straight, attempting to climb, until he could no longer? Just froze up. A mix of fear, denial, and disbelief. A common reaction when confronted with a dire situation one has not anticipated and trained for. If he had the presence of mind to turn, he most likely would also have had the presence of mind to NOT turn, and land in the field, as you suggested.

"it all happened so quickly"? One whole minute from rotate with a sick engine, till continuing to hold it up (losing speed) until it finally gave up trying to warn you and stalled, and at least three open spaces to land in, including the one you crashed in. \oo/

I’m sorry about your injuries and pain. Sorry you lost your airplane too. I hope by now you are fully recovered. Thank you again as many people have already said for posting this. Ignore the rude and snarky comments. We train, we review, we practice, we learn… and so on. Then one day if something goes wrong we hope. We hope, we react automatically right- like a reflex and do all the right things. But until you face something yourself you don’t know what you’re going to do. Then when it’s a done deal and if you’re alive… apparently something went right. Move on from there.

Stalled and the wing fell off. Your very lucky to be alive. No need to point out all the details. I love flying my sport but I am also a skilled aviator. There is a reason we spend so much time with an instructor. And this nails it. It sucks the FAA has put the kebosh on instructing in UL and experimental Aircraft

High wing loading. It’s a common Ultralight problem due to a number of design factors both regulatory and use case related. While the MGW is low, the size of the wings and their airfoil profile due to how they’re made are doing a lot of work. Faster is always better in Ultralights. Get slow get in trouble.

Wow, you had an enormous grass airfield in front of you to land on. All it didn't have was a runway marked on it. All you needed to do was pitch the nose down to retain airspeed, close the throttle and land. Glad you got away with it even if your aircraft didn't. This video demonstrates that a little (no?) knowledge is a dangerous thing.

Thank you so much for posting this video and I hope you are alright. I cannot believe anyone walked away from that... unbelievable and so incredibly lucky. Obviously, someone thinks the world is a better place with you in it! For future reference for anyone reading this, when your engine starts to mess with you and falter... you're landing, right now, no exception. Whatever is in front of you... is your runway.

All the comments are on the money. More power required or nose down. Low airspeed close to ground will kill you.
@mzaite16 күн бұрын
This is why even the little air tube airspeed gauge is vital for flying Ultralights. Too slow happens too fast.
@usaerospace67073 ай бұрын
Keeping the airspeed up and the aircraft straight when landing would have helped. Off airport landings usually end up as lose of control crashes. Any time you take off assume the worst! That way your are mentally ready for it.

glad you are alive! could definetly hear the engine issue on the roll and right after rotation you had plenty of runway left over to set it down and maybe roll into the mud

It’s probably no comfort but posting this is a great thing to do if just one person learns from your mistake. It’s normal and it’s very human to make mistakes and as the pain fades the reflection begins. This is a great use for KZbin. Thank you, I hope your injuries were slight and not permanent. 👍🇬🇧

I know it’s easy after the event but things were going wrong way before you ran out of runway to land safely on. It’s called “pressonitis” and you paid the price. An accident that could have been avoided🤔

I had an ultralight instructor decades ago who forced me to practice engine out several times every flight. He would pull throttle to idle and tell me I lost my engine. I then had to figure out wind direction, obstructions, where to land etc. He would watch while I went through actions, then when we were maybe 100' above ground he would bring throttle back up. I quickly got into the habit of constantly scouting landing locations as I flew. Today, decades later, I constantly scout for landing locations as I fly. If there's no survivable landing spots within gliding distance I circle or S-turn while climbing until I have enough altitude to glide somewhere safe. I'm glad you're alive buddy.

That was a series of really dumb decisions🤦♂️
@arthurg72574 ай бұрын
An old flight instructor told me many years ago when I was getting PPL, “if your engine starts to falter (like this did right at rotation), you owe the aircraft nothing. Find the closest place to land and get it on the ground. Don’t try to milk it and don’t hope it will work itself out.” Cut the power and land straight ahead if you had enough runway or a slight right turn and could have landed on the road.
