In the beginning he was a tortured soul. He was overly overtly cocky and showed signs of fake tough guy persona, strong man posturing and demonstrate establish bravado due to from probably his deep rooted insecurities. Which got him beat up by Burke Devlin. Mostly part from the fact he was maybe a run of the mill poor lower class/low social status upbringing (compared to the collins family) and a thief/criminal traveling with his partner Jason McGuire as his sidekick. Jason would probably abuse him, he did slap him a lot before his death Jason that is. Probably also had a rough childhood background. But after meeting Barnabas getting physically and mentally verbally emotionally pyschologically abused, being bitten/traumatize by a vampire and becoming his slave/servant for awhile. He humbled himself and showed humility and sympathy by apologizing for his toxic/problematic behavior attitude towards Mrs Stoddard/Elizabeth Collins, Maggie, Vicky/Victoria and Carolyn. Then later on in the series he would constantly protect Maggie Evans from Barnabas and Nicholas Blair or other dangerous scenarios because of his caring feelings/emotions for Maggie and was or might have been fallen in love with her too as well with obvious subtle hints that developed but were kept hidden secretly. And would also defend and protect the rest of the Collins family as well. So therefore he was decent/average individual trying to do the right thing in the end. By the way he did go a little crazy after because he got shot multiple times by the police trying to warn Maggie about Barnabas and luckily lived in at the hospital but unfortunately was sent to a pysch ward/mental hospital for awhile.

They cut the scene where Erik got redemption because “why should a lovely girl kiss a ugly man?” And “why should an ugly man get redemption?” Sad….
