We need a new classic style Phantom film. It's been almost a hundred years since this movie came out, and almost every Phantom film since has taken the story in a new direction. Not that that's a bad thing, I'd just like to see the roots of the story revisited, since even this film has some problems.

That ending was much better than the one they decided to keep.

Audiences Wanted him to be more threatening for this version as any adaptation of Phantom should not have TO AHINGE to the accuracy completely with his sympathetcy so they changed the ending to have what is seen and now should be restored into the original print and given to modern audiences!!!!!!!

My god im crying just from the stills....had they kept these in, especially this original ending, this version would be perfect.

Kelli Ann Little completely agree!! it would have been more loyal to the book. I would have loved the scenes with the violin😢

Absolutely! If they kept all this in it would be almost an exact representation of the book.

It's such a pity that theses scenes were destroyed. It'd not be hard to reconstruct the original screening cut if the footage existed. A tragic loss for cinema.

IT'S SUCH A SHAME they did'nt keep these scenes ! That's a beautiful adaptation, but it's really stupid to have changed the ending ! This one would have been so much more interesting !

Wow! someone should put this movie together and re-release it. I think it would be beautiful. Maybe they could play ALW score on the piano at showings.

HERE ARE THE TWO BEST RESOURCES FOR THESE LONG-UNSEEN 1925 POTO MOVIE STILLS (that *I* know of - I have both of these): (1) The 2-DVD set of "Phantom of the Opera" from The Milestone Collection (released by Image Entertainment). It has BOTH the 1925 AND the 1929 final versions. (2) The Phantom of the Opera 1925 (Hollywood Archives Series) (v.1)" by Philip Riley is so far probably THE most complete book on the silent version(s) of POTO (and I think it's even endorsed by the Chaney family).

There are mistakes in that Philip Riley book--so don't trust it 100%, No it is not endorsed by the Chaney family, Riley wrote it so it gives that impression., and besides Riley passed on.

It probably wasn't only the great unwashed that wanted the ending changed. Back then, moral standards were very rigid (especially with regard to "popular" entertainments like the cinema). Even though the infamous Hays Code (google it) was almost a decade away in 1925, the moral majority probably took issue with the Phantom (a kidnapper and double murderer) being "redeeemed" by Christine's love (rather than getting beaten to death by an angry mob, as in the final version). It's a shame.

What a shame - so many awesome scenes cut. I really wish they'd kept the Perros scene; I don't think many adaptations have that, and it looks great.

I wish the original ending was still available to see...more like the book! To me, it's as valuable as London After Midnight.

Well, at least the viewers at the first L.A. screening didn't like the ending and, as you said, didn't think Christine's kiss would be enough to redeem him. Of course, most of those folks probably didn't read the original novel, either. Yes, I know about the Hays Code; it ruined several movies that would've been better had they been left alone. Just imagine what ol' rat-faced Will Hays would think if he saw TODAY'S (mostly) garbage? If he weren't already dead, today's stuff would kill him!

Thanks for uploading this. Everybody hates on the other ending where he Erik is beaten and tossed in the river but I like it. Erik really wasnt a sympathetic character he was a jealous, menacing monster and he deserved to meet a brutal end. I also love the part where he pretends to have something in his hand to keep the mob at bay but then laughs at them when he reveals he has nothing. It shows the height of his insanity and it also gives him the last laugh.

So the cut scenes were closer to the book. I don't know if I ever want them to reboot this movie. It is such a classic and they have made many versions from non-musicals to ALW's famous and beautiful musical and other music versions. But this is the idea of bringing out the original horror which I know they considered with the new horrors that was supposed to start with Tom Cruz's Mummy (which was horrible: Nowhere near close to what it should have been.) So I am glad they haven't touched this classic. At least yet...

Honestly, for me the river ending is way more disturbing and actually works better IMO as it definitely makes you question yourself; although I think Erik should have had more consequences, the brutality of that mob violence scene actually made me feel worse for him, and think instead about what sort of consequences would be suitable, and how we should find a middle ground for dealing with criminals/people who have done bad things. I'm not sure if that was intended, though. Also apparently they were going to make a sequel where he survived the river, and Leroux approved it, which I find hilarious, but I'm also genuinely annoyed it never came to fruition because that would have been a very... interesting... movie.

can see the reason they made the adjustments; dying at the organ is too mellow and closed in. A broad outdoor scene with the crowd laying waste to the Phantom has more movement and excitement, a necessary ingredient of a memorable silent.
