Evelyn, I really am enjoying your videos. I have a question: you have talked about purple marjarom - Do you have a seed source you can recommend? It looks so pretty in your bouquets, but I'm not sure what which marjarom it is.

My seed source was probably a bird, I think it is wild marjoram as it definitely an aggresive grower which is fine by me. I have both white and purple and since neither was purchased I can't help you. I do know that both West Coast Seeds and Vessey's sell marjoram but you would have to contact them to make sure the flowers are purple. Sorry I can't be more helpful.

I loved using Parsley umbels this year. I used them a lot. They are such an easy care flower that they will always be in my repertoire. They are the flower of parsley which is a biennial, which means the parsley blooms in its second year. The flowers look like the Dara flower, but much smaller and completely green. I am excited to trial Gladioulus Evergreen next year. What a statement making green flower it should be. I've trialed Queeny Lime zinnia and wasn't impressed - but that's just me, I don't grow any zinnias, they bloom at the same time as my dahlias and I prefer dahlias. I won't trial Bells of Ireland as everyone seems to think that even though they are gorgeous, they are a lot of trouble to grow and I like to keep my life as easy as possible. I hope that was helpful🙂

I had thought of that but we are such a wet climate in the spring that I think it would make it more difficult for people to deal with the pots in their cars (too much water in and around the wrap). I also thought of adding wrap and taking it off on the wet days but that would be just too much added work. I was given a bunch of pots with foil on them from a neighbour a few years back and I still have not used them because of the rain. Next year Easter is on April 20th, which is generally a drier period, so I might try it then - weather determined.

Interesting to note, here in SoCal 9b, Thomas Edison was my most prolific dahlia this year. It flourished with the most blooms in spite of surviving 109-112 F temps. 40% shade cloth and Morbloom fertilizer did the trick. Other standouts included Arabian Night. Cornel. Kelvin Floodlight. Wizard of Oz. Linda’s Baby.

My Arabian Night also slowed way down in the heat, Cornel Bronze trundled along but is doing so much better right now, I dropped Kelvin Floodlight this year as it is very similar to Wandas Capella - just not as full in the petals, Wizard of Oz did well but now that it i's fall it has lost its pink and is only white. Linda's Baby I have not grown, I just looked it up, it seems similar to Sweet Fabienne, which did great in the heat but has really slowed down now. With my dahlias in my front garden, as a visual billboard to the street, I don't think I can use shade cloth, it would defeat the purpose of having all the dahlias in the front, too bad. Dahlias are only true to form if you purchase the tubers. Seeds never look like the mother plant as they are a creation of mixed pollination. I, living in Canada, can't sell to you in the states without a proper export license, so you will have to buy from within the states. I did a quick check, Bear Creek Farms, in NY has them. To dig dahlias up for personal enjoyment is a lot of work. Selling tubers in the spring sure makes up for the extra work. Bonus, for me, those home growers that leave them in the ground, every few years loose them all and need to buy more🙂 Two things will kill them in the ground, if the soil freezes down to the tuber level, and if it gets too wet - which is what people here have a problem with. We almost never have a ground freeze that deep. Our soil doesn't even freeze very often. Some larger growers in the states will mulch over top of their dahlias for a layer of insulation. If my glads don't come back, that will be it for me growing them, although I am digging and storing them.

To my bulb pots I added Angelina Sedum groundcover. Suppresses weeds , acts as a mulch and adds good layer of green especially for the alliums. The Angelina sedum groundcover has very surface roots so it is not aggressive, is winter hardy and it extremely easy to transplant. Just break a piece off and lay it on the dirt and it will grow. I like that it turns lime green and burnt orange when frost hits it. If you let it grow over a solid surface (concrete, rocks)it creates it's own dirt mat that could be easily potted for sale. Puts up yellow flowers that the bees like. I started with four 4 inch pots on my less than 1/4 acre. Every few years I pull it up and bag it for the compost bins as it has covered all available spaces. It is easy to pull up as the roots don't go very deep.

That's a great idea. I have that sedum, but I never knew what it was called - it was given to me. I never thought of using it in pots with other plants. I have pots of just sedum, and yes, that one is prolific, so easy to propagate and use in salable pots.

Don't pull it and in 2-3 years you'll have LOADS of them. Let one of the blooms go to seed. I save the seed and put lots of them in a hanging basket type container,set them in the garden where the pot will get full sun so I know where they are and can monitor their growth. I was curious about which is more profitable for small cut flower farms: annual flowers or perennials, especially since perennials take up more space and most of them only blooms once a year. Thanks for the video, Evelyn, Ezri, and Lela!
@EvelynM-vlogs
@EvelynM-vlogs Ай бұрын
It would really depend on the perennial. For example, the Astilbe fronds are so important to me in October, so they are a two season perennial. When the alliums die back, I plant my cosmos for a late summer filler. The Camelia blooms where no cut flower will bloom - in a lot of shade. The peonies create a statement flower when their are no others. If I chose to designate a fridge, I can expand their season by three more weeks and when they start blooming like crazy, I might - or not. The snowberries have usable foliage from spring through fall, and a small pink flower in summer. Daisies often have a second flush. The red rhododendron grows as tall as my house and if it was mine, I would limb it up like my pink one (which doesn't have good vase life) and plant Camelia beneath it. My hydrangeas are in pots and are not taking up valuable garden space. Yarrow also puts out a second flush, and if I had enough, the dried heads would also be great in fall bouquets. The marjoram takes up such a small space and we use it for culinary purposes as well. This is why these are my perennials. The other thing about perennials is how much less labour they take, if all I had was annuals, it would be all encompassing time wise. Also, while I mentioned that the peonies are now too big to grow cut flowers around them for next year, I will be planting successions of lettuce in their shade. The strawberries are getting pulled and the anemones and ranuncs will grow in their place. I told Ezri and Lela you said hi, they looked up briefly and then put their heads back down. It's a cold, wet, and foggy morning.

Hi Evelyn, The title may not draw everyone's eye, but I think this is one of your best videos, and how lucky are you to have such useful shrubs hanging over from your neighbor. The half green, half deep purple drumstick allium adds a different texture and color to bouquets, even among poppy pods, so for me, it's a definite keeper. My new bare root astilbe made a couple blooms in spring, then stopped most of the summer and just now has a couple more flower buds emerging. Is that typical? I do use snowberry this year, and you may have talked me into perhaps replacing an Annabelle with a limelight hydrangea. The huge, floppy Annabelles are prolific, but so unwieldy. The pale green blooms are really only useable with a few outer segments trimmed off for proportion.) My dahlias are blooming up a storm, except, slightly disappointing, the cafe au lait dahlia (newly planted this year) has only now opened her first bloom. Will try Labyrinth and hope for more production. Cheers, Heike

It's funny, I was asked by a friend a couple of weeks ago how many perennials verses annuals I use and I didn't know. That's what spawned this video. I do like the drumstick alliums, but my space is so small I have to be very selective about what I grow, especially now that the peonies are in their leap stage. I have never had an Astilbe do a second flush of flowers, but your location might be the difference. Or it might be that it was not an established plant when it put out the couple of blooms and now is ready to do more before the winter chill sets in. Some dahlias do better in the fall, I can't remember if Cafe au Lait is one of them. I do start mine in my seed room Feb. 1st-ish, so they are ready and raring to grow when planted out May 1st-ish, already pinched and above the soil surface. Thanks for letting me know that you think this is one of my best videos, I was worried it was too long.

I do subtle surveys without asking. For example, today I have an abundance of deep red dahlias so the two I put out first is deep red dahlias with white sunflowers and deep red dahlias with gold sunflowers. Seeing which is purchased first is a type of survey. I did this with the snaps, the ranuncs, etc. To date, my observations on colour choices is there are no winners except for the deep red dahlias, those always go first. One of the reasons I did the farmer's market the previous two years was to see how people respond to each bouquet, AND to each flower in each bouquet, and of course, to let them know where my flower stand was located.

I don't think you will regret trying them, I love them.🙂 I don't start my snaps in the fall for three reasons. First we are very wet in the winter as we live in a temperate rainforest climate. 2nd, we don't get very cold and our ground is hardly ever frozen, making planting at any time easy. 3rd, I do direct composting in the winter in my cut flower beds. I use the double dig method and bury all my large plant waste, as well as anything else I have. I take the dogs for beach hikes so in the winter I always have seaweed to add to the mix. What I do, is start them in my seed room Feb. 1st and plant them out about a month later. They stay small for a couple of months while their root systems develop and then they grow like crazy.

There was even some snow further up the road on Yr Wyddfa (Snowdon). I am thinking I should take most of my tender plants into the greenhouse tomorrow. There is such a lot to learn with gardening, the propagating and sowing of seeds isn't easy by no means! I also live a five minute drive from the sea. I feed my plants seaweed liquid. I think I'll save half of the seeds and sow them in February like you do. Wish me luck! (thanks again, much appreciated)

@@neryshaynes9149 SNOW - yikes! I'm still in shorts, although the temps are comfortable now. I like the idea of planting some now and some in February, that will give you a good idea of what works best. Sometimes it's so location specific. I have friends not that far from me, but their elevation is higher and their first killing frost is sooner than mine sometimes by several weeks.

@@EvelynM-vlogs Strange weather we're having over here atm. It was back to wearing a t.shirt again today! You are most certainly right regarding location specific. Going to sow some more Snapdragons in the greenhouse tomorrow. Thank you so much for your replies, they are much appreciated. 🙂.

That's awesome to know that it is as nice in real life as it is in a photo! The other Chantilly's look beautiful as well. I'll wait and see how I like the open faced snaps before ordering any others. Thanks for the info, it's always great to hear what other's grow and what they like.

I pair the dark colors with yellow sunflowers or light sunflowers, and or light colored glads or dahlias. I aslo this year added a pop of blue with bachelor's buttons. I tried Chantilly Italian Ice Mixed from Antonio Valente Flowers and liked them in bouquets 💐

the only glads I have are a deep red, and I do pair my yellow suns with deep red dahlias, so I understand what you are doing, but the deep snaps got lost in my dahlias, that was one of the problems. What size are your suns? I don't like the blue bachelor's buttons but I love the black button ones. I googled the Chantilly Italian Ice Mixed, they are gorgeous, the bronze in the mix looks similar to the ones I ordered. I've also pinned the seed company to look at later. Thanks.

@@EvelynM-vlogs I use about 2"- 3" sunflowers. I plant them really close together to get smaller heads. I also grow the smaller dahlias, which could be why the snapdragons don't get lost.

@@ilenehales7849 I thought your suns must be on the smaller side. For me, with such a small growing area, larger flowers mean I can make impactful bouquets with less flowers. That said, I still love my tiny bachelor's buttons and cosmos because they add the "bounce".

Hi everyone, I forgot to leave a link to the Johnny's website page with snapdragons, so here it is; www.johnnyseeds.com/flowers/snapdragon/ Also, if you sign up for their newsletter, they will give you a code within minutes for $10 off your first purchase of $50, not sure how long that lasts.

The weather in British Columbia has shifted over the past few years. Having more gardening space would make adapting to these changes easier. I know you will figure it out.

The ocean is warmer too, back in the 90s it was all the talk when the first big red jellyfish showed up in the harbour on Cortes Island. Now they are everywhere. As far as the flower farming goes, it keeps it interesting. Always lots to think about and adjust to.

Except that some of them do better than the heat lovers when the fall weather arrives, and since our first killing frost can be late in the season - once not til Dec 1st, I can still use the heat haters, just not in the heat of the summer. One thing that was not the greatest was the reduced number of blooms I had this year due to the heat, the front garden just wasn't the plethora of colour as it has been every other year. What bloomed got cut every morning.

Wow Evelyn. This is Monica from SoCal 9b. Thanks for the mention. Your findings are interesting. We have another heat wave coming this week. Projected highs of 104-105. It will be dry, arid heat. Out comes the shade cloth again. I’ll let you know how my dahlias endure.

We are getting that same heat blast, although our temps will only get up to 28c, which is 82.5f. The humidity is high, humidity is 82% during the night so everything outside is very wet in the morning. Def let me know how the dahlias do.
