I would dig an inclined spiral around the edges. Much less need for a jetpack that way. As long as the incline never gets too steep you can always just walk you way back up.

Gotta love the Gothic 2 style premise "you got trashed in the intro but you miraculously... became Level 1 again". G2 is literally my favourite PC game of all time but this game in particular could have used some sort of save import system, if only to have a couple levels in the top skills you had at the end of the first game and a couple references to story choices. If Quest For Glory 1-5 and Baldur's Gate 2 could figure it out, I'm sure KCD could too.
