I really would have tought more wingspan would fly longer...
@NighthawkGliders
@NighthawkGliders 2 ай бұрын
Yeah, many factors can impact a glider’s flight time… for example, how high was it launched? Did it transition quickly into a glide? Did the glider get help from a thermal? Was the glider heavy or light? Did it have a large or small wing area? The last two questions might be the most important. But, how do you say the glider was “too heavy” or had “too little of wing area?” These are relative terms. So, therefore, we can calculate the potential lifting performance of the glider (called wing loading) by taking the overall Weight of the glider divided by the Area of the wing. e.g. L = W/A. The smaller this number, the better. Let’s do some math: Our 12” Tornado has a weight of around 8 grams and a wing area of 23.6 in^2. Its wing loading = 8g/23.6 in^2 (0.34 g/in^2) Our 36” Tornado has a weight around 50 grams and a wing area of 127.25 in^2. Its wing loading = 50g/127.25 in^2 (0.39 g/in^2) So, even thought our 36” glider has a wingspan 3x longer than the 12” glider, the ratio of weight to wing area is almost the same as the 12” glider- and slightly worse. Theoretically, in perfect conditions, if these two gliders were flying side by side, the smaller glider would have a slower sink rate and better flight time. In conclusion, an increase in wingspan does not guarantee an increase in flight time. Instead, calculate its wing loading for a better indicator of potential lifting performance of the glider. I appreciate your comment! 😊

Gorilla brand super glue is my favorite. You can easily find that in most hardware and grocery stores. You’ll want a super glue that has a medium viscosity. “Regular” super glue is typically way too thin. You can find other brands of medium viscosity CA glue and balsa at hobby stores. Thanks for buying the plans! 😊

I’m a beginner, and I have a question. How do you reduce the elevator of the glider? My glider was going in loops after I launched it, I tried to slightly increase nose ballast, but it still when in loops and I don’t know how to reduce the up elevator. Thank you for making this video, it really helped!

Cut 2 strips of balsa 1/8x1/32x1/32 and glue one on each underside trailing edge of left and right stabilizer next to the fuselage. This will help reduce the loopiness of the launch. I call these “trim tabs.” If still too loopy, add more until you get desired result.

When I was younger there were several companies making CO2 motors but seems to be only one now? I converted several rubber powered free flight modes to CO2 power and they flew much better. Interesting fact.. the fins on the cylinder head are to absorb heat not to cool the motor.

I recently just got finished building a 12 inch sand piper for my fleet! Its a great looking glider, but I can only get it to do about 12 second flights. I was wondering weather you could tell me where the best place is for the CG? at the moment on mine its about 40% back, but ive tried closer to the edge of the wing and more near the back. I just wanted to know if there was an average CG for the sand piper so I can use it as a good place to start. Anyway nice video, keep up the good work
@NighthawkGliders
@NighthawkGliders Жыл бұрын
Thanks! Glad you like the glider! 😊 I find the best CG is at 50-55% back from leading edge! If you glide looks good, and you’re only getting just 12s flight, I suspect glider weight might be a factor. Balsa selection is key. Try to build a 6-8g glider and fly on calm days. Wind and launching technique can also play role in flight time. Good luck!

@@NighthawkGliders ok thanks l will give that a try! I will also probably build a second one to compare the difference. Im going to a model shop soon so I will make sure to pick up a selection of different balsa sizes and see what works best, and anyway experimenting is all part of the fun! Thanks for the feedback. 😊

Oh my, the shot at 8:14 is missing how much you are tilting the tail piece to the right. It was so confusing, Isn't it possible to re-shoot that bit & give ppl a sense of how much to tilt? I love these little gliders. They work so well, but if ppl get lost at any point, they give up. Just re shoot the build section where you align the gluing on of the tail. Cheers. Great glider regardless of my b*tching & moaning!
@NighthawkGliders
@NighthawkGliders Жыл бұрын
Yeah, sorry. A failure on my part. You’ll want the tail to lean about 1/4 inch lower on one side than the other. If you are right-handed, lean tail to the right as viewed from the back. This will cause a counter-clockwise glide. Reverse the lean if you are left-handed for a clockwise turn.
