To be extremely blunt, is there a reason to still fetishize an engine that has such poor controller support and other inherent limitations beyond the fact Close Combat is too far along now to do anything about it? The Fighting is Magic devs themselves talked about how the Z Engine made things so much better for their development (I see the irony of saying this now). Wanting to preserve the past is different from wanting something outdated to have a future.

I suggest that you only put pokemon that can learn the move close combat, i hope we wouldn't see another gardevoir or gengar, or else it will be just like type wild

I honestly wondered why it costed a meter in the first place. I am no game designer, but if the move had to stay, I would just make it last 1-2 seconds and costing no meter. More of a "oh shit it wasn't safe to jump in" tool rather than a stall strategy enabler. But I am just 1 person with this opinion, and I really like the bravery of removing a move.
@royoboyo2 ай бұрын
Awesome video!! I've been wondering, what was the thought process on how meter gain works in this game, how did you come up with it? I've never seen it before, it's really unique!

Secret lore: Before I started on CC, I'd been on and off toying with the idea of building a fighting game in 2dfm that resembled a competitive card game using a limited and indivisible resource system. Even when I homed in on making (another) Pokemon fighter, the original idea was to have HP represented by up to 12 small circles, making the damage system as legible and vivid as something you'd see in the TCG. Eventually, the health system moved towards the more traditional HP bar we have today, but I kept the meter resource as discrete chunks that could only be earned by *wanting* them, which often meant taking a smaller W in advantageous interactions in order to save up for a bigger W later. At the same time, I didn't want going for the meter to ALWAYS be the right decision. It's arguable how much we've succeeded, but the idea was always to give the player a sense that their decisions mattered and I'd hoped having a primary resource that grew only through employing a targeted strategy rather than something that more or less accrued passively was one way to do that.

does poliwrath's power up punch(and bulk up blow actually) count as an uppercut for the purposes of breaking armour? by uppercut does it mean all launchers?
@Altilt2 ай бұрын
Uppercuts essentially means all launchers here, yeah.

if i had a nickle for every time altilt made a char with an overhead with an alternate version that hits low with minimal change to the animation, i'd have 2 nickles. which isnt a lot but it's really fucking funny he did it again

I have no idea why this was in my recommended, but I'm happy it was! What engine/framework was used to make this game? Purely based on what I could find on the website, it doesn't seem to be any game engine I recognize
@Altilt2 ай бұрын
Engine is called 2DFM, its pretty old but has a long list of old freeware fighters made for it.

I think is interesting, but may do something different than direct damage. maybe counters for something else, like a small stun, so it become a combo tool at some point
@AoiEgg2 ай бұрын
Yeah. Just removing or changing change the whole will be better. It could be a poison thing. Like you use a slow-moving, smaller, that last for 2 seconds and poison the person if it hits for maybe 3 ticks
@funguy3982 ай бұрын
My answer is: because of wasted time policy. I spent time implementing this stupid mechanic, and now i have to spent time to remove it.
@BaseOiboi2 ай бұрын
Yeah, this is called the Sunk Cost Fallacy. Unfortunately when it comes to game design sometimes fun ideas don't actually work out to fun gameplay.

Great video! Only thing that might be helpful for new players that was missed is how to understand the character select screen. Having not played a lot of old fighting games, I didn't know at first that all the moves shown on the move list were special moves (more specifically, moves inputted with the special button). On top of that, I didn't understand what "END" meant on the character stats. Took me a while to discover it meant endurance. A brief rundown of what those stats are shorthand for, along with what they mean, would be very helpful for new fighting game players. Also, showing how to control Wobbufett might be nice, but I suppose that might be a bit much for beginners.

Next time cut out all the dead air between matches, nothing of substance was said during that time, but good on whoever put proper timestamps.
@Altilt5 ай бұрын
These are usually VODs with zero editing, although to be honest I guess I did have to edit this one due to technical issues anyways, so I could've edited the other matches. But these will likely continue to just be raw VODs in the future. The main channel (capfight) tends to have games that are cut and edited if you're looking for that.
