Impressive garden especially the tomatoes! We moved to Celina from West Georgia and one thing that was so surprising was how hot and dry June through August has been, and even with straw mulch and drip irrigation our tomatoes have stopped growing and fruiting -- any tips for midsummer tomatoes in north TX? Great channel!

How do you keep the grass from invading your grow beds?
@OurGiftedGarden2 ай бұрын
I mulch pretty heavily. But, it definitely doesn't prevent them. I'm losing the battle in a couple of beds and will have to reset.

This is the first year I tried to grow a blueberry plant but it died what did I do wrong
@OurGiftedGarden4 ай бұрын
It's hard to know what exactly went wrong. Blueberries like plenty of water and they need acidic soil. I have to water mine more frequently than I do other things in the garden, and I add a soil acidifier every 3 months or so to the pots they are in. I also use a fertilizer for acid loving plants.

I live in Arlington and I can't get my peppermint plants to grow
@OurGiftedGarden4 ай бұрын
I'm definitely not an expert on peppermint; I just have one plant that I planted 4 years ago. I grew it from seed back in 2000, planted it in a container and it's been growing since. I fertilize it everyone once in a while and water it when I water the rest of the garden.

Wow. Great harvest! I just picked my tomatoes today and thinking about making some sauce with it. How long do you roast for and what temp?
@OurGiftedGarden4 ай бұрын
I roast them at 400 degrees for about 20 minutes. Just until the bottom of them browns a tiny bit.

Hello. Are those bell pepper plants I see? Do you fertilize them as well? I started from seed, they grew true leaves and maybe one or two more sets and just stopped growing. It's been about two+ months at this point.
@OurGiftedGarden4 ай бұрын
For my seedlings, once they have true leaves, I fertilize them with a water soluble fertilizer at about 1/2 strength once every other week. If they aren't growing, it could be that they need fertilizer if they soil doesn't have enough nutrition.

Hello! When and how often do you fertilize your tomatoes?
@OurGiftedGarden4 ай бұрын
I fertilize my tomatoes, and most of my spring/summer produce once every 4-6 weeks. I use garden tone, so it breaks down pretty slowly.

The compost and alfalfa pellets is really all okra needs. My okra grew so well that each plant literally grew into trees with 2 1/2 inch diameter stems/trunks. I was harvesting about two and sometimes three times a day. Great video and beautiful garden!

When your plants grow you move the lights? They don't seem low enough for seeds?

I'm so glad the video is helpful. I have 2 lights on some shelves and 3 on others. You can get by with 2. For seed starting I mix my own soil with just two ingredients: peat moss and vermiculite. 3 parts peat, 1 part vermiculite. I have a video on which I show how to make it. Essentially, in just mix the ingredients together and then moisten with boiling water.

Great garden. I am setting up my raised beds this winter. What advice do give a newbie in North Texas. Also.do you buy seeds at big box PR off websites? Please tell me kinda what you buy qhere.
@OurGiftedGarden9 ай бұрын
My advice for a n. Tex newbie is to keep the heat in mind when deciding what to plant because it's pretty intense. Also, if you can set up drip irrigation, do it. It's difficult to keep the garden watered in the summer otherwise.
@OurGiftedGarden9 ай бұрын
I buy seeds from everywhere. Sometimes at big box stores, dollar tree, etc. Some I order online at places like baker creek, urban farmer, hoss tools and others. It just depends on what I'm looking for. Big box stores have very limited variety.

Do you use the worksheet for your 3 year old?
@OurGiftedGarden9 ай бұрын
I didn't start using mathseeds with her until she was 4, I think... but yes she did the worksheets then. The whole time we have used it we alternate lesson and worksheet, but before she could read, i had to help her more than i do now. She's on the second grade level now, and we modified it a bit to do half a lesson and half the worksheets every day. The lessons are a bit longer now, so she wanted to split it up. Also, I don't have her do every single question on the worksheets. Often, I just go through and circle half of them and have her do those.

I love this program. We used it last year for my daughter in 2nd grade. We’re using it this again this year for 3rd grade. My daughters friends that were in 2nd grade public school were learning what she was learning. She finished last year on lesson 179 which was 3rd grade. We’re doing it this year with my kindergartener as well. I love that reading eggs/ eggs-press and mathseeds has a homeschool calendar that can be followed for the school year as a full curriculum. Such a great program!
