@@hiba I am not sure what the die is called but it has V265 as the identifying number. You might ask Annie Pennington at Potter to look for it.

Martha are underglazes the same thing as Cool Tools sunshine colors
@merryleerae11 ай бұрын
Sunshine enamels are an overglaze meaning they are vitreous. The Underglazes that Martha is referring to are not vitreous which is what makes them underglazes.

My thanks for very informative video! As another commented "there is not much out there" to learn from, so I really appreciated you sharing this technique. I am learning basics of silversmith/jewelry but am limited by equipment (no kiln). However, I am pretty good with torches. Have you ever seen a piece (similar to that in video) successfully fired via torch? I have spent many hours on other projects, only to eventually realize my approach was impossible or beyond the hours remaining in my lifetime! LOL 😒

Can you give tips for drilling? My drill bit somehow won't go through. It used to be easy when I took a class and we had drill press, I now use flexshaft
@merryleerae Жыл бұрын
Hi May, usually if I am having trouble it is because I have a dull drill bit. First use a center punch to locate your hole placement, then use a lubricant like Burlife or beeswax. Run your flex shaft at a slow speed and make sure you aren’t running in reverse. If none of that works, you may have a dull drill bit. That is usually caused by getting it too hot by running it too fast. I hope that helps!

Thank you for your investigation into plique a jour. You are so generous with your information and there is not much out there. I wanted to contribute a little. I took a plique a jour class with Amy Lyons and discovered a couple of things. For the first fill she leaves a hole in the center of the cells so that the enamel doesn't pool on one side and the enamel is covering the cell walls. She does the longest and hottest fire for the first and last fire (1min 20 sec at 1450F). She also fires the enamels damp.

Yes, absolutely! On fine silver it is actually much simpler as you don't need to use the scalex to keep the oxides from forming.

Using Boric Acid and Alcohol solution to prevent fire scale on Sterling silver. I set up my solder joint using batterns and snippets. I wick off most of the flux then heat until the flux has dried, because there is minimal flux, there is minimal frothing, minimal movement. While the piece is still hot from drying the batterns, I paint on a boric acid/alcohol solution. It dries immediately and stops before it floods the prepared joint. Again avoiding frothing and movement of the snippets and parts because the boric acid has not flooded the joint.

Thank you again for all of your contributions here. After decades of jewelry work I'm now getting into enameling. I've been doing my own setting for years and have used this technique for moving stones around and setting/holding them. So easy to tell if the stone is tight and it can be easily steamed or ultrasonically cleaned off. I would imagine that a hot water wash would also remove it from sensitive stones. I use a small nail as a handle and have it on the back of the head.

You are right Merry-lee, so little info. But this makes us try and try and it is wonderful to figure it out. I did the same as you with different backings and finally settled on capillary action. Float the enamels on the water. A quick video kzbin.info/www/bejne/qJi5hqJmg7ymaa8 And like most techniques there are several ways. Patsy

Your work is exquisite, I really would like to know are the scales beinging done with regular gauge fine silver foil or are you useing a thicker gauge.
@merryleerae Жыл бұрын
The silver scales are done in Ginbari foil (available through enamelartsupply.com) which is 4.5 microns thick as compared to standard foil which is 1.4 microns. The 24k gold foil is 1.4 microns standard foil and some I made myself that is about .001”.

I just found you while I was looking for a tutorial on using mason stains. I had tried this a few years ago, but I don't think I used P3 and I think I tried it with water. Needless to say, it didn't work and I'd given up, but I have all of the necessary ingredients and am eager to try again. Thank you! PS...I've not had a great deal of luck finding information on using mason stains. Any possibility that you could do a video on that? How to mix them and with what, how to apply, etc. I would be so grateful...again, thank you.
