I remember filming 16MM film at the wedge with Bud brown in 60's. Then having a beer with him at a bar at the pier

Its not the size that scares me (a little). Its the fact that theres sort of a counter wave that can throw u off big time, and the fact that the sand is right there…. Monster wedge is scary

I honestly don't know, how they don't drown in this wild and big surf, with one big wave after another. That's tons of water coming down on top of them! They are awesome and very brave! I just hope they don't get totally wiped out and never surfice. God be with these guys. 🙂👍🌊🏄♂️🏄🙏🙏

Glad to see that after 60 years, few if any can make it on a big day at the wedge. We called it "Body Whomping" back in my day.

GOAT!!!!
@peters2196 ай бұрын
If you've only seen Slater surf the last few years, you have no clue why he kept winning so much and is the GOAT. He would just demolish the waves and find ways over and around sections. He did this in big or small waves and always managed to find the score or blow away expectations in all conditions. It was amazing to watch.

He still does on his day, watch his pipe master/pro win in 2022!
@peters2196 ай бұрын
@@ymatT601 I think he can win at pipe for a long time. I'm talking about performance surfing. He would streak across huge 10 + ft (hwn scale) Lanis like it was just head high. This was during prominance of Hawaiian heavy water surfing with names like Poncho and Sunny standardizing big gaffs under giant walls. In performance waves, he would torque turns under and through the lip with tail towards shore and land like a cat, while still flying down the line. During pipe contests that were small he would surf gums and streak through what seemed like 50yds of barrels and get pinched and not get the score but, who else could do that. He's going to rip for a while but if you never saw him in his prime, you cannot fully understand why he was so dominant.

@@ymatT601 kzbin.info/www/bejne/qWXKeZ59nbOZn5I The man just evolved through the years of surfing and put it all together - from classic lines, small to big waves, radical to modern. I see JJ's and JRobo turns influenced here.
The union jack and all the other overlays are a tragic mess. And ,yes, he is certainly one of the greats.

that's what I call entertaining viewing. I was glad to see a bodysurfer out in this traditional bodysurfing spot, even though the risk of getting speared by someone else's equipment is great.

There no way he punchid that chark, it's not physically no possible to punch on a chark. Folklore!
Curren is the king of style. So good. Ethan Ewing kind of reminds of me of him because of his style. Slater will be missed on tour. I hope he becomes a commentator.
