Today as it was at the first day, this tune is my favorite Brandford Marsalis tune. My world changed forever with it. ❤🙏🏼

Ten years ago, I watched this video every day. It's been a while since I saw this video. That's why I love jazz.

It is a shame that there is some sort of disconnect between the feeling expressed by this piece and the various forms of 'serious' music (jazz or otherwise) players/audiences seem to prefer. Are the feelings expressed in this music invalid? Are they irrelevant to human experience? Is this sort of music too simple to keep the interest of 'sophisticated' players and audiences? I challenge those who prefer modern styles of music to prove that they can encompass feelings such as are in this piece. Prove that your cutting edge style is not restricted to feelings of darkness, ambiguity, uncertainty, or isn't just some abstract semi-musical game that doesn't even pretend to relate to experiential human life.

Excellent . Excellent. I worried what would happen after Watts left. I didn’t need to.. Mr Faulkner is carrying the torch of Elvin& Tony and Tain further.

I think he is using clarinet reeds .any idea why ?
@edwarddesenne61532 жыл бұрын
Not on this piece, i read on one of Branford's albums that he uses clarinet reeds for his classical playing and Zoot Sims did so also on his jazz reciordings on soprano which gave him a more oboe/ clarinet like crossover sound. Incidentally Bob Wilber often used a soprano sax reed for his jazz style clarinet playing , giving him his individual distinguishable fat sound in the lower register

He is so well centered and in control on soprano, an instrument that eats most alto and tenor players for lunch.

Steve Shape: Man, you are so right. I, too, have long admired his tone. Never heard anyone with better tone on soprano. And, his ideas, ornaments, articulation, vibrato amaze me. Great musician.

A heard Anthony Braxton rival this on soprano once, but Branf is still the all-time finest.

Very, very interesting. I think this whole "MFs" thing is an experiment in creating a new step (epoch?) in jazz: going from very modern sophisticated language to improvising in "simple" lyrical motives / melodies that are easy to remember and even sing. It's like Stravinsky's neoclassicism in some sense. Of course this quasi-simplicity is indeed an attempt to reach Perfection. I am so impressed. Speechless actually. Thank you gentlemen! (And I bet you are having a lot of laughs between e.o. :)).

I remember a video where Branford played Cherokee... and there are girls in the room looking at their phones; apparently here (@12:45) is the same thing! What kind of honey does he put into his instrument to gather these special creatures around all the time? :))) Thank you for the music guys; this is simply ingenious, I hear and feel and understand e-very sing-le no-te, eve-ry rhythmical idea, there are absolutely 0 "misses", it's just unbelievable how good you are.

Damn. You guys are on that real shit. Just saw you at the Mid-Atlantic Jazz Fest. I hope this group stays together for a long time. You are helping to define the upper limits of the music and creating new vocabulary, so thanks. Good luck and God speed to Justin. Keep killing it man. Before you know it people will be talking about your legacy and legend (some already are). Guys stay in good shape (eat right, exercise). We need you in this for the long haul.
