Kiaora from New Zealand. My mum's generation loved dahlias and grew many varieties, colors and shapes. I had no interest at all simply because they had no scent and now I'm in my seventies. I've grown immensely fond of them and encouraged a few of my friends who were not really fans for gardening, but now have beautiful gardens. I've enjoyed your video and look forward to more. Thank you so much, God bless.

Great video, very clearly explained, I like the sound of your parents, pinching and licking the cuttings, how lovely to have such memories. Thank you.

Do you call soil compost? Whether seed starting mix or potting ?
@woodsiastudioАй бұрын
So you did not soak the compost when planting but only watered with spray?

So interesting. I just took a bunch of cuttings from a friends' garden and came looking for evidence that I wasn't crazy. Thank you so much!

Some people while pinching will pop those in as cuttings.

Your father was way ahead of his time . Now knowing about the rhizophagy cycle and how it stimulates root hair growth , licking the cutting will actually help the cutting root because of the bacteria in saliva.

Will the cuttings create tubers?
@vc131a Жыл бұрын
Yes they do - either small pot tubers or larger field tubers depending how you grow them on ...

Is this the Foxfield at Blythe Bridge near Stone. I was born and raised in Stone, spent some time at the station, living in Victor Street. I used to watch the porters releasing the homing pigeons and recording the times etc on a clipboard. We all went down to watch the circus unload the animals from the freight cars, feeling a bit disappointed the the elephant was quite small.

I always thought you need a little piece of the tuber as well to have a successfull cutting.

29:59 Thankyou so much for your amazing tips for Dahlias, just a tip for the hollow stem cuttings, slice down the middle stem to split in two, better chance of rooting x2 ….

what a fantastic video! Thank you for making this. I'm in USA zone 7A and just planted outside all my bulbs that I started inside under grow lights. Can I take my cuttings now end of May and plant them in a medium and leave them outside since it will be so warm? i will of course monitor and water all of them. Does that idea sound feasible?? warmest regards.
@vc131a Жыл бұрын
Normally you would take cuttings prior to planting out the tubers - I start mine off in a glass house in January and the plant out the resulting plants in July when all chance of frosts has passed. If you take cuttings after planting them out, you will limit the number of flowers on each plant, also the resulting plants will not be suitable for planting outside (not big enough) until next year. Is it true if you take a cutting without a small piece of the crown attached, the plant will only bloom in the first year? And when replanting the new tuber it will not flower anymore? What’s your experience?
@vc131a Жыл бұрын
What do you mean by a small piece of the crown? You'll find that cuttings will root easier if they have a small amount of the tuber attached, though, so long as they have one pair of leaves plus the growth tip, they will normally be OK. HTH

I started my dahlias from seed this year. I went by recommended seed sowing time, but mine are gigantic and taking up all the space in my grow setup. I'll definitely start them later next year!
@vc131a Жыл бұрын
I think you will find that plants raised from seed will mostly not come true to the original variety - they will be a mixture of what ever varieties the pollenator visited ...
@daniellebailey6802 Жыл бұрын
@@vc131a they were from a packet, not personally saved seeds. Yeah, I have no idea what I'll get. I also don't know why I said I would start them later next year when I will have tubers to replant 😆

Could one take cuttings and still get the tubers to sprout again if planted in the ground after a cutting is taken?
@alancarlyon3928 Жыл бұрын
Every day is a school day -as they say! I watched on You Tube in how one separate's Dahlia tubers, then tonight I view your blog in which taking cuttings from Dahlia can create more plants which I would not think that was possible! Many thanks!

I think that not only being space efficient the square pots do not encourage spiral roots as much as round pots. Take for excellent info in vid.

Hi! I’ve done some cuttings sealed in a plastic bag for humidity... they lost all leaves but now have some new leaves coming through. (Which was a nice surprise!) Would you let some air in now or keep them in the bag? They seem like they’re going a bit sludgy!
