Are you moving slow or is it cutting that slow? Don’t back up while mid cut, it’ll throw the blade. Adjust the guide arm closer to the material when cutting smaller items like this, because it helps the blade from drifting and making wavy cuts.

So, you want a world class product but don’t want to pay for it? Comparing Bosh / Dewalt / Mikita to Festool is like comparing a Kia to a BMW, show a lack of understanding about the tools and basic quality / performance bands. I own the 90 and all the other brands. The 90 is vastly superior on any measure including price performance.

Demos at shows? Back in the '90's I took a Sakura scroll saw to a show during the holidays. I cut 4 2-3" ornaments from varied woods, using patterns I cadged from a book by Patrick Speilman. This setup was in the center of the main aisle at the local mall, so open all 4 sides. By the 3d hour, my backstock had sold out...150 units @ $2ea. There was a line forming, waiting for ornaments. I began to stack saw 3 at a time to reduce the congestion around the booth. By mid-afternoon I was out of blades, out of wood and anxious about day 2. The mall mgr came up, looked around and smiled. "Well done, son. You wanna move to an empty storefront and set up thru the holidays?" He had also invited several crafters to take up 'residence' in that empty store and for four weeks we all just kicked butt. Went back three more years until the mall changed ownership.

That sounds like an amazing experience! Unfortunately for me, I was forced to cancel the majority of my shows for this year due to a heart attack. So I still haven't had the opportunity to try it out. It will have to be the right show for sure. I can't have my stuff flinging debris on my neighbors product. Thanks for watching!
@DougMilleratWoodSpunRound10 күн бұрын
I agree with all the steps you’re taking except the Pentacryl. I was taught in the early days that it gives the wood a green cast. Is that your experience? If not, maybe I should give it a try. Boiling green wood has always given me the results I hoped for, but the Pentacryl may be an added step I need to include.
@BrailsfordWoodworks10 күн бұрын
Hey Doug! No I haven't had that happen using Pentacryl. I have had pretty good luck with it. Mind you, it is expensive stuff, but I figure when amortized through several dozen bowls it will pay out in the end. Thanks for watching!

@BrailsfordWoodworks10 күн бұрын
Thank you Michael! Boiling softens the lignin in the wood and allows the bound water in the cells to escape more freely. You will have better luck against cracking that way. Thanks for watching!

Hi Mike, there is a company called “serious grit” that sells 3 1/2” paper. I just ordered some last night for 2 other festool sanders. I just checked the 3.5” availability. It’s on Amazon . Disclaimer- I HAVE NOT TRIED IT YET , but it’s far less expensive and I figured worth a shot. That is a sweet lathe amigo, I’ll be checking out your other videos (What brand and model?) Thanks!
@BrailsfordWoodworks10 күн бұрын
I may look into it! The paper I buy for it, in general ( I use Klingspor paper), isn't my hang up with the sander. It is the overall price for the tool and the insane price of the velcro "interface" pad. I have gone to buying larger ones and making my own. It is way cheaper that way. When I took my lesson with Glen Lucas, he showed me a different way to sand my turning that does not use my Festool sander. It has been faster and I get better results. I do use that sander for other sanding that I do that is not turned pieces. Thanks for watching!

How far do you usually go out without a steady rest? I always worry about long pieces coming off the lathe.
@BrailsfordWoodworks10 күн бұрын
Hey Michael! With that tiny vase it wasn't an issue at all. However, the rule of thumb is 3-4 times the diameter of the vessel is when you should add a steady rest. Erring on the side of caution does not hurt either. Thanks for watching!

My test will be if I can put the bowl in front of the right person at the right time, with the right money. Thanks for watching!

Hated tool boxes until I began to use Festool. Systainers are excellent - tools plus all accessories always available and instantly visible across the room, with the inserts keeping everything organised and stopping them rattling about. £10 for an insert and it's instantly usable - compare that to A. N. Other (inclusing Milwaukee) plus the price of a foam insert plus the cutting in process...Systainer all day long for me.
@BrailsfordWoodworks19 күн бұрын
So, I can see where some might like them. For me, however, I don't take my tools anywhere, and I have cabinets for them and really can spare the real estate in my shop to accommodate yet more tool storage. Thanks for watching!
@brucecraig495420 күн бұрын
The Festool products last for decades. They stand behind them and the precision is amazing. They are stupid expensive and cost way too much. But you will find those who make a serious living in wood buy them once. I have spent twice as much in thirty years than I ever have on Festool. It’s because I have bought it three times in other brands. So again I agree expensive but worth it.
@BrailsfordWoodworks19 күн бұрын
I have said that as far as quality goes, my RO90 is nice. I do like it. However, no one will ever convince me that they are appreciably better than Makita, Bosch, Milwaukee. Even if you can make the argument that they are better than those brands, you also could never convince me that they are twice as good as they are (that being the amount they usually cost more than those brands). Just my opinion. Thanks for watching!

Great project making the sled. One suggestion for you. I’ve never seen anyone use a wedgie sled with the big end facing the blade before, always the small end. Set up your sled this way and your board width problem should go away. Well done.

Well... Don't I feel like a dope! Thanks Doug!
@NBCRGraphicDesign24 күн бұрын
Amen to the crimes that DeWalt/Stanley/Black&Decker did to the Porter Cable line of tools. I am the proud owner of nothing yellow-- no thanks on anything labeled DeWilt. And, great build on the wedgie sled. PLEASE ... Take a few minutes to build a dedicated throat plate with a glued-on ramp to divert your cut-off segments away from the blade. Hitting the spinning blade with that pusher stick can create a really BAD day..... The ramp will divert pieces away from the blade as soon as they're cut off.

@BrailsfordWoodworks25 күн бұрын
As for the power head, not sure of the exact weight, but I did have to place it on the track with my tractor. Mine is elevated to that added a complication for lifting. If you had it at ground level It would certainly be easier. There is some assembly required. You have to run the lift cable and attach the push bar and mount the throttle and water valve.

No sir. I don't know what that is. It is 100% mine. Every project I have ever made, furniture or turning (with one exception I will explain in a minute) has always been original from me. The one exception is the crib I built for my grandson. I used the Wood Magazine plans. I hated it, but I felt I needed to hit all of the crib requirements. I have one more thing coming up that I am going to build from plans and that is a split top Roubo bench. I am going to use Benchcrafted's plans. Aside from that I, as a rule, don't like using plans.

One thing you might want to do is. Never install the cutters before you install the cutter head. It would to easy to damage the edges of the cutters as you install the head if you bang them by accident. Better to install head first then install the cutters.

@BrailsfordWoodworksАй бұрын
That is a tough question. There are a ton of factors involved. How much time you spend? Have you coated them with a end grain sealant? If so how much money have you invested in sealant? are you processing them beyond being square? What kind of wood is it? What is the market price for that wood? There is no quick answer to that. Make sure you know how much you think you should be getting per hour. I would start at $50/hr and factor in the other issues I mentioned and see where they come out. Most importantly, you have to have a market for them. Thanks for watching!
