What would the best application of a blade nib, I wonder. Does this also come in #4, #5, #6 & #8 size nibs? Who produces the most highly rated blade nib and aimed at what niche within the fountain pen market, I wonder. I'm looking for interesting swappable nibs for TWSBI and Jinhao barrels. Thx for any responses.
@FountainPenSounds8 күн бұрын
because of the shape of the tipping material the nib writes narrower at higher angles and wider at lower. Maintaining a "standard" ~45 degrees it writes somewhat architect like where horizontal strokes are slightly wider than down strokes. I don't personally like writing with stub nibs as they tend to have a more defined sweet spot as far as rotation goes. So for me this one just gave a slightly more interesting line without the fuss I feel when using a stub. I've seen similar nibs sold separately such as this one. amzn.to/3Uf9pFP which claims to be a #6 size that lists some jinhao pens as compatible but I know from previous experience just because a pen and nib are both #6 doesn't mean that they will be compatible. Sailor's Zoom nib is another example of a similar (in function at least) grind

I have never seen these faux Lamy brush pens. Thanks for sharing this. What a good idea to use Purple Rain with it. The sheen would be seen quite well, I imagine. I will see if these are available in 🇩🇪. Sometimes when imported goods are copies of trademark goods, the customs office confiscates them.

Its been a few months since this experiment. How has your piston pen worked since then? Has it clogged with the mica? I have a Diamine Orchid shimmery ink and it clogs all of my pens, no matter what brand. Any tips to prevent this?
@FountainPenSounds9 күн бұрын
I wrote with them not that long ago and they were still good but I'd have to double check again. As far as tips my big one is to regularly roll/flip the pen to keep the shimmer mixed in. Even while writing it'll tend to settle out to where all the shimmer is at the bottom of your converter or ink reservoir.

The preppy writes great I've been interested in the Platinum Prefounte to see if the body body material feels higher quality than the preppy as the nib is supposed to be the same.
@berolinastrassmann12 күн бұрын
Yes, I can confirm the material of the Prefounte is more robust. I have it in a pencil case full of pens and it has resisted all sorts of wear. The nib is the same as the Preppy. It is also a workhorse. It just writes, always. I find it is underrated. For a couple more $$ you get a more durable pen than the Preppy. I have one and I ❤️it. @@FountainPenSounds

Having said that about the Prefount, check out the Platinum Plaisir, which costs almost the same as a Prefount, but it is made of metal. It has the same nib as Preppy and Prefount and it comes in several colours. If prices are the same where you live (it is th case in 🇩🇪 where I live) I would consider the Plaisir, for longevity's sake. It is aluminum, so it is light and robus. @FountainPenSounds13 күн бұрын
To the best of my ability it appears to be just branding. As the same 3 pack minus the precise branding has the same model number as the one I bought with that branding on it. Looking up precise on pilot's US website just brings up various fineliner style pens with that branding. You can also find the Varsity under V-pen which appears to be the Japanese varient of the Varsity. Found on the Japanese pilot website.

I resolve this by simply transferring all my inks from their bottles into cylindrical borosilicate laboratory sample storage bottles with PTFE foam cap liners... though I'm in the process of cutting out 1.5mm thick silicone round cap liners that I can sterilize when I'm done with the ink (instead of discarding and replacing the PTFE liners). I struggle with a limited amount of room to store craft supplies, and having perfectly cylindrical bottles from Pekybio (the threaded areas on their sample jars narrow slightly so the edge of the lid is in line with the bottle sides) and the fact that Pekybio provides a corrugated plastic (slightly padded) strong box with a lid for each 20ct bottles of the various sizes, allows me to add a white matte cut square piece of adhesive label to the top with an abbreviation of the ink name and a small smear of the ink color. This also stops the problem of some inks to evaporate in their stock bottles, as I'm able to easily add another cap liner to increase the amount the foam compresses and increase the level of airtightness if an ink contains more highly volatile liquids (alcohols) that evaporate quickly.
@FountainPenSounds14 күн бұрын
I can see how having everything in uniform bottles could be beneficial. The main brands of ink I use come in square bottles so I just find it aesthetically pleasing to have them very evenly lined up.

How are they with drying, I know many fountain pens dry quickly but many also don’t and that’s important because I’m left handed
@FountainPenSounds15 күн бұрын
@@XMisFitBoyX being right handed it is difficult for me to know the exact qualities and dry times needed for a left handed person. But I have some ideas so I'll get back with you after I get out of work.
@FountainPenSounds15 күн бұрын
@XMisFitBoyX Out of the three Varsity I got the purple dried faster than the blue and black ink. I tested by quickly filling in the square between the dots on my rhodia dot pad (which is a fairly ink resistant paper) and then running a dry finger across. Purple seemed dry after 5 seconds blue at 10 and black maybe needed just a bit more than 10. Writing right to left the blue and purple smudged less. Using intentionally more absorbant paper is one of the recommendations I've seen for left handed people, in situations where you can't choose or don't wish to choose a faster drying ink.

1:33 - Reloading these things with a pair of pliers, an ink bottle and an eyedropper or syringe is actually very easy, even for a "beginner".
