Lots of nib options for this pen so pick up spare nib units to try out different grinds fairly easily.

I experienced similar challenges adapting to the FPR Himalaya V2 Ultraflex. I have found that the nib is in charge. If I respect this, and write at the speed that the nib demands, that I produce a letter that I am proud to send.

Getting a feel for the pen and adjusting your speed and angle is certainly a big part of it as well.

I bought an EF UltraFlex Himalayan from FPR. The nib does flex quite a bit, and it is quite a wet writer. It drinks ink much like a 1977 Cadillac with a 500 cubic inch engine guzzles gasoline. However, I would class it as a Medium- to Medium-Broad nib. Not sure where they get Extra Fine out of that nib style. Reverse writing is nearly impossible, as the nib tip will catch the paper and fling drops of ink. It's quite a monster of a pen, but I'm keeping it. Thanks for the video.

Certainly guzzles ink went through a full fill making this video.

The FPR UltraFlex nib deserves a lot of love, but I wish FPR offered some slightly better pens for it. The Ambassador is too skinny, the Himalaya is too light, and the Jaipur is too long (and still too light). But among the offerings, I do like the Himalaya v2 better, so I have 2 of them. Thanks for the video.

Pilot Custom Heritage 912 with the fabulous Falcon flex nib is the best reliable flex pen. The Con 70 converter holds a ton of ink. I have it with the original plastic feed and have no problems with flow.

If you can find it, the Pilot 823 with the FA nib is fabulous. Comfortable and huge ink capacity.

@@paulmchugh1430 a number of pilot's higher end pens look quite appealing imo. They tend to be a bit out of my budget currently but maybe one day.

Are you using the ultra flex nib as well?

I would start with adding a few drops of soapy water to the ink you fill it with. Make a dish of a few spoonfuls of water with a drop or two of dish soap mixed in it. And then you can add a few drops of this directly to the pen if you don't mind removing nib and feed. Or in a sample vial so that you don't mess with a whole bottle of ink. The soap lowers the surface tension of the ink and increases flow. Add too much though and you'll have a mess. An overfeed is another option but significantly more fiddly to pull off

I also found since this style of nib is easier to flex it is fairly easy to flex further than you need to. I like doing the figure 8 slowly adding more pressure on the down stroke to get a better feel for where it cuts out and how fast I can go.

I really wanted to keep their pens, great designs, great price, but I had to throw away all 3 pens, because even the clear one smelled of vomit. When they change the formulas of their acrylics, I will happily buy from them again!
@FountainPenSounds2 жыл бұрын
I'll have to smell it when I get back to work. I have a Noodlers pen so I know the smell your talking about. But I don't remember noticing it on this specific pen. I've got the clear freebie pen at home and it doesn't have that smell at least. Only other pen I have from fpr is a ebonite pen so it smells like rubber as you'd expect for ebonite.
@sarahleeann72082 жыл бұрын
@@FountainPenSounds wait, do all Noodler's pens smell like that? I have an Ahab. I wouldn't say it smells like vomit, but there's something. Does it ever go away?
@FountainPenSounds2 жыл бұрын
@@sarahleeann7208 it has to do with the vegetal resin used in some pens. This one doesn't have the smell. Some of the pens from Fpr and Noodlers use this resin and do however. I wouldn't describe it as a vomit smell if you've worked with solvents or gotten acrylic nails/walked past a nail salon it is more in that vein. It fades overtime in my experience. Ive heard some people stash the pen in coffee grounds for awhile to mask the smell initially.

I am sorry. This pen is not of good construction. The piston know was broken. The feed is horrible with the ink "burping" and a pool of ink on the paper. The nib, though is good and a great starting point for using a flexible nib.
@FountainPenSounds2 жыл бұрын
Flex nib pens are a fine line between not enough ink and a fire hose mess in my experience. Mine leaned towards not enough ink which I worked with as described in the video. But my understanding is that heat setting the feed can help resolve some flow issues. I didn't have any issues with the piston knob on mine, even disassembled it once just so I knew how. What issues were you having with it?
@paulmchugh14302 жыл бұрын
@@FountainPenSounds it fell apart. The rod cracked. I could not repair the mechanism. I got a new piston and then the pen "burped" ink consistently. It was a mess. So, I ditched the pen but not the nib. It is now on a Noodler's Ahab and works great.

You’d think they’d perfect it before putting it on the market. It looks like flex pens are a lost art.
@FountainPenSounds2 жыл бұрын
I think it comes down to attempting to hit a price target. There are nibmeisters which custom grind flexible nibs but you pay a premium for the handwork and adjustments on a per pen level.
