I'm starting a new campaign with an Autognome race (Spelljammer) with a Gate Warden background (Planescape). Gate Warden gives the Scion of the Outer Planes feat so I chose the Evil Outer Plane to give the Autognome resistance to necrotic damage and to be able to cast the Chill Touch cantrip (120 feet range). He starts out with a light crossbow with Repeating Shot and a Homunculus Servant. At 3rd level, he becomes a Battle Smith and gets Battle Ready to be able to use a musket (1d12 piercing damage) with Repeating Shot. He will have Guidance and Mending as his Artificer cantrips. At 4th level he raises his INT from 16 to 18 (+4). At 5th level, he gets Extra Attack and a second damage die to the Chill Touch cantrip. By the way, his two-legged Steel Defender will have a kettle-like container inside the chest cavity so that the Autognome sits in it and aims his musket as if he were a gun turret on a panzer, with his shield shaped like that of a turret gunner's shield. When not flying, the Homunculus Servant can grip the top of the Autognome's head to act like another weapon turret. Two arms with gripper hands on each side of the Steel Defender can be used for bonus action attacks. If so, the Homunculus Servant infusion would need to be replaced with either a Repulsion Shield or a Goggles of Night (extends darkvision to 120 feet) for the Autognome at higher Artificer levels. But either the Homunculus Servant or the Steel Defender can be used to deliver Cure Wounds healing to allies. The Autognome character is named "Tron," the Steel Defender is "Flex," and the Homunculus Servant is named "Tweezers."

*SHORT VERSION* My criticism of the 2024 Player's Handbook is that, discarding its rules and mechanics, there is no canon or story here. *LONG VERSION* If you love reading compelling lore, comprehensive worldbuilding, or writing immersive characters that feel grounded in the setting, then the 2024 PHB is not for you because, somewhere between the last leap year, Wizards of the Coast stopped caring about telling stories. Just compare the contents of any playable races - not the feats, skills, or abilities; but the lore - and the difference is night and day. For example: Dragonborn. In the original release: Dragonborn occupied *three* pages and over *four hundred* words were devoted to lore alone. The book described Dragonborn as these viscerally intimidating draconic beings that live in relative seclusion, and organize themselves into large family communities called clans; they strive to be self-sufficient and Dragonborn devote themselves to their clan - sometimes to the point of borderline zealotry. In times of crises, a clan will traditionally seek aid from other clans before consorting with outsiders or even the Gods. I'm dramatically simplifying here, but if that doesn't spark your imagination, then... all I can say is: _Slay away, murder hobo! Slay away...~!_ If it does spark your imagination though, then you'll understand why I think 2024's revision is appalling. In the 2024 version: Dragonborn occupy *one* page with only *ninety-five* words used for 'lore', and it's a mess. Three sentences go back and forth toying with two separate creation myths, before the writer just shrugged and literally concluded with *_"Whatever their origin, [...]"_* by the third; and the rest is a description which... basically just says: _"These are humanoids which look like dragons."_ - which you would already know from the _(frankly... ugly)_ Dragonborn illustration above _(still not as ugly as the round table of Tieflings, but I digress)._ There is no mention of their clans, their childhood names, or anything to imply what their place in the world even _is,_ and I'm struggling to figure out why. And make no mistake, it's not just Dragonborn that have suffered: 2024's races no longer provide meaningful details about their culture, history, traditions, beliefs, values, typical alignments, naming conventions... there's not even a mention of age / average lifespan _(which is going to be a_ fun _tableside discussion when your players encounter a Ghost and it ages one of their characters fifty years)._ Objectively: This is a huge downgrade from what we had before. Dragonborn may have Dark Vision now (along with the other 6/10), but if this is the direction D&D is taking, then it feels like we're in serious trouble of losing something fundamental and important for our characters: Their identity. So... in conclusion: Was the original more wordy? Absolutely _(just like this comment~!),_ but... whatever the solution was to make the PHB more cohesive: Throwing out a good story and replacing it with nothing wasn't the answer. It's story that makes your character distinct; not whatever feats or class combos you can min-max, you murder hobo. And remember: It's not whether or not your Gnome can see in the dark that makes him or her special; it's the fact your Gnome is named Erky Gnackle Perky because_ Gnomes love names_ so much that every member of his family called him a different name and, for formalities sake, he uses his three favorites because Erky Hurdy Gurdy Gnackle Crackle Perky Turkey is a right mouthful.

Personally.. I'd skip Investment of the Chain Master. Unless you find some way of increasing their HP they rarely have enough HP to survive one hit. At most it might have 24HP with a Sphinx of Wonder and at a pathetic 13AC. Even a basic fireball's average damage of 27 will one shot it. Their damage is so low with one single attack it also doesnt matter making it's attack less resisted by changing it's type to radiant or necrotic, plus I'd never want to give up my own bonus action to let it attack at all. The resistance might make it last 2 hits... but again... it costs its reaction to do it against ONE isntance of damage which means it can't deliver touch spells any more since you'll be saving the reaction for this, and most foes will have multi attack, so they'll just attack it again the same round and finish it off. You're always better off just taking something more useful as your invocation, watching your familliar get splatted and recast it. Hell, a basic imp, sprite or quasit from the basic POTC feature has either invisibility or shapechanging to try and blend into the background and this has much better odds of keeping it intact.

He is a hexblood (fairy ancestry) whom was sold to hags as a baby, and after serving them for years learned his parents also sold his soul to a devil (hence the illrigger). The warlock part ties into his use of blood magic (most spells and features and such from both classes reflavored as blood magic) and my dm and I are currently working on how the Patron ties into it all.
