Hi Colin, superb modelling, for plants, one of the things I use is green pan scourers, I cut strips, dab them with spots of red or yellow paint and glue them around some of the buildings, it's surprising how effective simple little things like that can be, I like the idea of using tea-leaves to represent compost, anyway, take care, all the best from Scotland, Stephen.

Good morning Colin. 🙂 The pylons you are looking at form part of the three-phase 33kv and 11kV distribution networks (hence the three cables - carrying the red, yellow & blue phases). The isolators atop the poles really do look good giving a superb overall effect! ⚡ _In terms of the railway DC electrification, the 33kV sub-station feeder cabless are carried lineside either buried or in troughing. A few sections of the network are fed by 11kV lineside feeder cables (for example Tattenham Corner branch and Tonbridge to Bo-Peep)._ Really do like the vegetable plot - something that is often missed - and the beehives too - excellent. 🐝 _Can just remember the beehives on top of the general offices at Waterloo station!_ All the best, Colin 👍

A most useful video for modellers, raising what is arguably the most significant cause of poor running on so many layouts - the wheel-rail interface is so often not understood - so well done! 👍 Poor /reduced back-to-back dimensions and coarse wheel profiles will inevitably lead to poor and erratic running and upgrading your wheelsets is a most worthwhile step. Hopefully your running will now be much improved. 🌞 _Even the newest Hornby wheels are uncomfortable on Ewhurst Green's finescale track so get replaced (they can have a slightly shorter axle length). Romford wheels are a good replacement as are Ultrascale - who make conversion packs for many locomotives._ 😉

Well done - a nice purchase! 👍 Phase 1 unit no.7126 entered service end-March 1959 and received its yellow warning panel 19th April 1966. Unit 7126 was outshopped Blue /Grey (full yellow ends) on 21st November 1968 (it missed out on receiving all-blue livery). It was refurbished 3rd February 1979 and renumbered 411509 (later 1509). I've provided a full history of the 4 CEP units on BloodandCustard.⚡ _On a personal note as Bachmann produce a Blue /Grey 4 CEP and the two liveries ran together (both could be seen with one of the rarer all-blue 4 CEP units) I'd personally consider retaining its green livery._

@@Mossendrailway00 Colin, if you look amongst the photographs of the MLV history there is a Green MLV + Blue/Grey TLV + Green 4 CEP + Blue 4 CEP + Blue /Grey 4 CEP passing through Faversham on 21st April 1968. All that was missing was the (sole) Maroon TLV...... ⚡ Laying the con-rail is time consuming but the final effect is worthwhile. 🙂 _On Ewhurst Green the insulator pots are an interference fit in the sleepers with con-rail removed, sprayed with primer thence painted with sleeper grime before refitting...._ ATB Colin. 😉
@ewhurstgreen
@ewhurstgreen 2 ай бұрын
Thank you for sharing your experience in laying the third rail. 👍 Done the absolute right thing in not painting the conductor rail prior to fitting the insulator pots and current mainline railway practice is (usually) one insulator every five sleepers. Good advice in not using the risers too as it isn't possible to get the correct offset from the running edge with PECO code 75 /100 track. At 12"=1' it should measure around 16" - this equates to approximately 6mm for 00 track.⚡ In drilling the sleeper ends, the conductor rail insulator pots on Ewhurst Green are a simple press fit into place. Once an length is laid the rail is removed, coat of primer thence just a covering of sleeper grime before refitting - the insulators became brown (largely from brake dust) very quickly. If an insulator pot starts to sit proud a dob on pain usually assists.😉 In terms of your question, personally I would lay the conductor rail into both platforms and both lines (the railway would have done this for operational flexibility). 🌞 Don't compromise your layout for sake of having to be careful using a track rubber! _Personally tend to use other means for rail cleaning on Ewhurst Green's significant lengths of third rail with track rubbers only every used for problem spots._ Most of the time the Ten Commandment's rail cleaning wagon is used followed by a good vacuum with Dapol cleaning wagons (these are only ever used in vacuum mode). IPA is also used in moderation (Isopropyl alcohol not India Pale Ale). There are some models that will physically foul the conductor rail (there are prohibitions on the 12"=1' railway) such as the Pacer units while the Lima /Hornby EDLs need a little trimming on the underside of their bogies (moulded sand pipes if I recall).

These details look really good. You can leave it as it is and run it as a bi-directional line. Personally, I would do everything - but that does involve pain/cost. But you don't have to do it all at once. Track cleaning: just running trains frequently cuts out the need for a lot of track cleaning (just clean wheels every now and then). You can cut a slice of track cleaner off, mount it on a skewer and use that to clean the rail near the 3rd rail - OK, more pain.😂 Have you tried "Track Magic"? (I am just a happy user). Really cut down on the track cleaning I have to do.
