This lens has been mentioned by Yannick Khong as having good micro-contrast ( "3D pop" ), which is unusual for a zoom. Normally he rates low element count primes highly. Maybe it's because the zoom range isn't that great? What do people think?

When you said about a sluggish aperture I noticed that you didnt close the aperture to the smallest number and flip the little tab near the rear element.. this is how you check for slow oily blades on auto lenses, they should open and close with a fast snap. But old preset M42 lenses like Helios 44 were constructed with greasy blades and people assume that cleaning the blades will make a difference but it is a waste of time.. Only auto lenses like yours should have the snappy aperture and it's easy to test.

Some years ago a photographer friend recommended this lens to me. Didn't buy at the time, thought I'd do it eventually...but now it's out of production. Please could you share what current option you believe to be most comparable? She mentioned it to me because I told her I was looking to invest in a FLASH, which she thought I could bypass by going with this lens.

another point, the 50 is NOT the widest for the v system, natively they go as wide as 40mm, but the SWC (super wide) has a 38mm lens permanently affixed to the body; those are NORMAL wide lenses, a fisheye 30?, I think was also for the 500 series cameras.

@1989Goodspeed

Well. Unfortunately I don’t own this lens anymore, but two other lenses I could recommend is the Nikkor AF 20-35mm f/2.8D (1993-2001) or the Nikkor AF 35-70mm f/2.8D (push-pull 1987-2007). The 28-70mm was as stated a “kit-lens” and had quality comparable to a kit-lens. When I did the video I only had a APS-C camera available to me, now I use FX or full-frame. So when using a FX lens on a DX camera you get the crop-factor and more of the sharpest parts of the optics are used but I can only speculate that the corners would be a bit more effected if used on a 35mm film camera or FX digital camera. But that´s speculation from my part. As stated the 20-35mm and 35-70mm in my opinion are better lenses but for a kit-lens the 28-70mm is a good budget alternative. Regarding to used with crowds as a wide angel, well… unfortunately I don’t have any experience in that. Sorry.

@ 34:07 …."Even darker"…Oh boy …He made fun of who said it in his seminar…..I do not know how film compares to digital sensor but the principle is the same, I define the reflective grey 18% when I see on my histogram the spike smack in the middle….That is my unit on may digital camera ( you will find it off a bit from the reflective reading but close). you do not have to increase or decrease power, just open up and close down your lens…:)

Lol, you have seen the lecture?, I have thrown in some “Collins Quotes” throughout the video, though I stayed away from some jokes/puns that might not have ages well over the last 30yares (1991). Well as I have understood it in general a full frame 12Mp camera will have better low light performance then a 36Mp full frame… So the compassion might be that the higher Mp value the more comparable it is to a lower ISO film, but that’s just my thought pattern. Well you can do it both ways: If the subject has to be at a specific aperture f-stop to be in focus then modulation of flash power is preferred. Or if you want to change background brightness and have the incident value of the subject stay the same. If you combine flash with ambient then shutter speed or aperture can be a better way of controlling light ratios. But I think that’s one of the brilliant ideas of Collins to manipulate light ratios and have control of intensity and colour value while the subject is the “constant”. Anyway, I think that Dean Collins through his 80s and 90s learning material have given out more useful information than many contemporary photographers learning material (exception might be Joe McNally).

Well sorry, supply and demand I guess. Have some Finelight publications and some of the DVD´s like the Live at Brooks institute, among others. Cool, Magic of Light Tour is that the red binder? Think I have seen a picture of it. Really was sold on Dean´s way of communicating concepts and how to implement them practically… Even though they are “old” there is still more useful information in his material than in many contemporary photographers learning materials. I linked two of your videos: Chromazones and “how to make a deep duck”. Also found out about Tim Mantoani (RIP) who was an intern of Dean´s and made the updated version of the 3D-contrast with Software-Cinema. - You have this background? Yeah, it´s extra. We have a “gray-fee” we put on our stuff…. Briliant.

I start in photography with an old artifact: no TTL, no hot shoe, no light meter, no rangefinder, shutter speeds from 1/15 sec. to 1/250 sec, non interchangeable lens, just a fix lens F: 40 mm / f: 4.0... Off course the wonders of film development and the magic of the dark room, hook me since 1958 to today... After traying the modern technical advances through Nikon D3x, Somy A 90 and Nikon D810 working professionally and ending "fabricating" pictures at the computer, I decide at this very advance age that I can not live without the mix smell of metol, hydroquinone, sodium sulfite, acetic acid, etc. And, as you can see I am watching this video... Five years ago I start looking for a Vintage SLR y real good condition with the light meter working. Thru a friend I contacted a gentleman in Wisconsin that was selling a collection of Nikon cameras, from him I got a Nikomat FTn and a Nikomat EL in mint condition and with the light meter working. I normally use a Gossen Lunalux SBC and through some testing I found were to adjust the meter ISO on the cameras to obtain the correct exposition... I am taken real pictures again and I can go out with the confidence that the two heavy tractors I bought will not let me down... Can you tell me what can be done with a Nikon FE that can not be do with a Nikomat EL in good shape..??? This movement is not a hobby or a dream: if we continue using analog cameras some companies will be putting film, developer, photo paper, etc. in the market and then we continue to see real pictures in the exposition saloon... Thanks and blessings to everyone who fight for our analog way...

I'ver heard it does very well on the D3 and D700 - 12MP FF sensor. On newer cameras, with higher and higher MP sensor, most D lenses don't do as well as newer design ones from the G series. I've just picked one of these, from the last series (2019/2020), to use on my D700 and my film cameras. It'll arrive in a few days. From what I've read and heard, it goes very well on both. Let's see!

What was your decision? Decades ago, I replaced my worn-out Mamiya C3, C22, and C220 TLR wedding cameras and 55/80/180mm lenses. I replaced them with two Mamiya RB67 bodies and 50/90/180mm lenses. I have never even considered "upgrading" them for the RZ67 because I prefer manual/mechanical cameras over automatic/electronic cameras.

The 5th battery seemed cool but I rarely used it out about & lost it (not wanting to take a single out of my 4x sets). I use flash brackets w/ its own extra power of 4x batteries of which I always have in sets . I use the Nikon SK-6A (updated) or SD-8

At the time of introduction, every press room/newspaper bought these. Newsrooms were major target for this camera. Newsprint is 200 dpi at 8X10 size is what AP uses. Magazines use 300 dpi at 8x10 size. These dpi's are still in use today. The D1x will output 200 dpi at 8x10 size or 300 dpi at 8x10 size. Today, if you post to social media, you resize to 2000 x 1300 or so for Facebook. With the D1x you don't have to resize. Still relevant.

After some test and comparisons and having owned a Nikon D3X for years I cannot understand all this repenting return to the corpse of the old and out of features D2x in any of its models. 'Build as a truck" are saying some around. I personally prefer a Ford, a Chevy, etc... "Nice pictures" are saying others... Of course, but the dynamic range is more limited than with my older Nikkormat if you applied the Zone System for B&W film... From that time if you want a truck to take pictures go to the D3X ( that has no crop sensor and have 24 MP) Just remember that Ford and Chevy are not comfortable hanging from your neck...
