Mate you really need to improve your thumbnails they looks so unprofessional. Your videos are of great quality, sure we won’t agree on everything and negativity wise I tend to cut people a bit more slack but the videos are so objectively good I think the thumbnail makes it look unprofessional and you’re loosing potential viewers there.

I‘m native in German and studied english and french in school. After graduating I lived in Madrid for 9 months, studied spanish in university and spent 6 months in Mexico. I had a native spanish boyfriend for 3 years and a room mate from Mallorca. I have a master‘s degree in hispanistics that allows me to teach at high school. So i‘d say my spanish is pretty good and fluent but i‘d still consider it to be around C1 level because i‘m still struggeling with literature, like i tried to read some Isabel Allende this year and it‘s hard bro.

I loved this video, very informative as always. For me, as a native Brazilian Portuguese speaker, the problem arises when we use the subjunctive differently in other Romance languages. For instance, I have the impression that we use the subjunctive in a much more relaxed way than French, in both directions. We also have something unique to Iberian languages, the future subjunctive, which we kind of invented and didn't exist in Latin, so... So there you have it. I've been living in France for ten years now, and I still make mistakes when it comes to subjunctive sentences, because the usage isn't the same... 🤣

The finnish course definitely feels like it could be better but its helping me so far. My boyfriend who's a native speaker is helping me which is a fun bonding tool, i would love to be able to speak with him in his native tongue one day

I understand the central point of view the video bit i would say that if you understand a language enough to communicate with others and understanding it as much as any casual speaker then you can effectively claim that you speak the language. Because at the end of the day, A language is a tool of communication. (My opinion) In my own exemple i can say i speak 4 languages. My two native Tongues and English and Spanish. I am trying to learn for others but it is not consistent enough for me to make any progress.

I'm Australian, I got diagnosed with ASD in 2019 and passed the Goethe-Zertifikat C2 a few years later. The way I see it, being autistic forces me to be hyper aware of how others act and express themselves, and actually makes it easier to pick up on nuance and mimic native speakers, because I already had to consciously do it in English in an attempt to behave in a way that is socially acceptable - something which still doesn't come naturally, even as an adult. Somehow I've gotten to the stage where I have a great deal of trouble convincing native German speakers that I'm not one of them, but often get mistaken as a foreigner when speaking English because my accent is a wild mix of all of the TV and movies I was raised by rather than the result of listening to people around me. I did find the listening and reading questions on the exam to be quite a bit harder than the writing and speaking sections though, reading between the lines will always be hard for me in any language, but I have no problem expressing my opinions or delivering a convincing argument.

The slang itself doesn't annoy me, it's when people string nothing but slang together into the most basic semblance of a sentence and try to roll with it. It's the equivalent to the exaggeration and stereotyping of Jive as a language being used in actuality.

One time in a Paris airport while I was waiting for my flight, a little French boy came up to my bench and asked me if this place was free. I replied that the place was free, except I said "this place is a book." (livre = book, libre = free). Later I went over this in my head and felt so stupid.

I’m all for not using slurs and derogatory or hurtful language but I feel that we shouldn’t assume that people are going to be offended by an innocuous remark. If someone is offended then we need to respect that and change our language accordingly. Yeah... in Finnish, we say "äidinkielinen" or "someone who has the language as mother tongue". The emphasis is that it's what they learned in their family. So for instance, someone who has Finnish Sign Language as their first language, would be "äidinkielinen viittomakielinen". Doesn't refer to any "nation". Which I find cool.
