Werdel’s forehand is atrocious. Have no idea why Arantxa kept hitting to the backhand in the first set. Low quality match.

Ask Gaby Sabatini about that forehand! Beat her in the 1rst rould there. There was a poll at the 80/90 turn where Werdel's forehand was 2nd behind Steffi's.

Easy win for Arantxa. This was the only time in her career Werdel reached the semis of a slam. Her chances were slim against a seasoned player like Arantxa.

Amazing run from Mauresmo beating Sugiyama, Pierce, Hingis and Davenport. Unfortunately she crashed out in the second round of the Australian open 10 days later 😢

What a great match from Davenport. Graf was sluggish after her Herculean effort to beat both Williams sisters.

Even if Graf wasn't sluggish after her two matches with Serena and Venus, I would still give an edge to Davenport when you consider both the surface and what stages they were at in their respective careers.

The only two players to beat both Williams sisters and win the tournament ever were Sanchez Vicario and Henin I believe. And Sanchez beat them in the last 2 matches, so did not have to follow beating another. Henin did but it was over her pigeon Kuznetsova (3-18 lifetime vs Henin) and in her best year ever so full of confidence.

Interesting to see Capriati had many more winners than Seles (14 vs 9)in this match which is unusual for her. Far more unforced errors though and she seemed distracted throughout the match.

For two years, Steffi Graf had no real opponent since 1993 and the stabbing of her main rival, Monica Seles. Sanchez, Martinez, Sukova, Mc Neil, Pierce, Novotna, and Mary Jo Fernandez did not reach the high level of Monica in 1992/1993. No credit should be given for her victories during this time!

The WTA FINALS really only felt authentic when it was played in New York, because of so many of these iconic players and their rivalries, and because of the love from the crowd that gave it an extra holiday feel that's not replicated elsewhere.

Lindsay was so brutal to beat indoors, fast courts, no wind or elements to get in the way of her incredible consistent hitting. Hard to overcome that.
