IMO one of the most underrated vintage synths which is really a "sample-sizer" in essence a 12-bit sampling front end (that can also create simple waves through additive synthesis), feeding into what is basically an expanded DW8000 parameter set (but with selectable 2-pole/4-pole VCF responses which the DW doesn't have AFAIK). If anyone is curious about what I mean, note that the list of parameters is printed on the top of both the DSS and DW8k - so look them up and compare - you'll see that they share many parameters in common but also, the DSS has a number of control options that the DW doesn't. I no longer have a DW8k (though I do have a DW6k which believe it or not has its own charm), but given how comparatively little the DSS is worth and how much it would cost to ship it, I don't foresee ever selling it. A month ago, I finally (after years of pondering), popped in a GOTEK in place of the floppy and that was a _really_ good move, worked out great. I also have a Mac-based program that will convert any DSK or IMG files so the DSS can read them - I'll provide this freeware to anyone who asks. Next comment is for you to believe or not as you please - I've created layered pad sounds using a _pair_ of Matrix-1000s _plus_ a D550 _and_ and MKS70.....and have found pads in the DSS by itself that stand up to all of that combined - pretty impressive!

Yes, one of the most underrated vintage synth as you've perfectly pointed it out... which has analog warmth, thanks to its particular circuitry & electronics ... You also confirmed that it has even more control parameters than the QW-8000 ( I used to read in a forum a while ago ) ! Not surprised you did created rich layered pads ( especially using "a pair of Matrix-1000s plus a D550 and and MKS70" ) !!! Definitely a great, impressive machine built like a tank ( almost as heavy too ) ;-)
