My wife doesn’t have an iPhone and I was able to send and receive messages with the IOS Satellite while Elk hunting.

where are you hunting or i won’t waste time watching these

I’ve tired the new iPhone sms feature out for a few weekends now. It’s great, but not as versatile as inReach. 1- you have to open the message app, find a satellite, the. Send or check for messages. It won’t just receive a message while clipped to you like inReach does. 2- You have to send a message to someone via satellite first, to kick the message thread over to satellite sms. If someone just sends you an iMessage or regular sms while you’re out of range, you won’t get it. 3- the other person you are messaging has to have updated their phone software in order to reply to your satellite sms. 4- it’s very hard to send/receive while moving(eg in a car). You need to be almost stationary and move the phone to face a satellite. The good aspects: 1- Use your own phone number seamlessly. It works great! 2- you can even see when the other person is typing a message, it’s impressive. 3- the phone directs you to find a satellite SMS, it’s accurate and fast. 4- It’s FREE and no limit on number of messages. All in all, it’s amazing technology and only going to get better… but I won’t cancel inReach just yet.

You can see with everybody reviewing this thing the scope/rifle trying to rotate 180°, everybody holding the scope with their elbow to keep the rifle upright. No need to do this, the elegant way to do this is to let the rifle ride scope down which is how it naturally wants to, no fighting, then the scope is out of your way and your arm is free to use your trekking poles etc. Just put the rifle on the left side of your body so the bolt knob doesn't dig into your hips. My other advice is to make sure that release clip is not going around the bend of your barrel or it can inadvertently release, mine did twice in 2018 & 2022; learned the hard way. If the clip is straight in tension, it will not release. I also let so me slack out so the barrel is not in my face and reflecting my headlamp less at night.

Both are not connecting to satellites it’s actually connecting to the nearest 3g tower both are a scam trust me

We still hunt thick timber when its raining.

I agree the inReach is dependable but the Iphone is completely unreliable. I am staying with inReach for the foreseeable future. I am disappointed in the Apple satellite system as it currently works. It doesn’t! Doesn’t work in Australia with data sim only 😪

Recipients don’t have to have IOS 18, but they do have to have an iPhone to communicate with you. Used it extensively in AK and MT; worked great, including in deep canyons. Had to wait a bit longer in AK for a satellite to be in position. Have to initiate a conversation as the individual on satellite. In other words, you won’t receive any texts from individuals you haven’t sent a text to while on satellite. Once you do, you continue to receive texts for 24 hours, but that timeline resets every time you send a new text. Awesome technology, and it’s free.
