Job well done another one rescued there is nothing like a genuine general electric box fan of any era 50s 60s into the mid 70s. I have brought money back from the dead.

Get some coil cleaner in a can and clean the coils in this unit. You will be surprised at how much dirt will com off it. Then spray it with a hose to rinse it off. You will be doing yourself and the ac a big favor in cleaning it out.

That’s a really nice looking fan blade! Is this the predecessor of those Swan fans?

Don’t think it’s a predecessor. Think it was made concurrently. Just a guess since I’ve not found this fan in any literature yet.

Wow! I didn’t know that Gilbert anything of that caliber presuming this is the AC Gilbert company. Very reminiscent Boyd profile as my Sampson safe-flex. It’s a shame that the hub on that thing looks like it’s been tweaked. I also really dig that three wing aircraft prop style fan in the background.
@BackusBreeze
@BackusBreeze 2 ай бұрын
Neither did I until I saw it! Yes, the same AC Gilbert Co as the smaller fans. Seems a couple blades did hit something in the past, minor scrapes on the trailing edges. But there is a weight cup inside the hub to provide balance. Maybe the hub was produced imperfectly: the casting is massive. I’ll be working to see how smooth running I can get it. Need to determine the motor shaft isn’t bent first.

3:07 Old video but apparently Marelli was the first to create these curved blades that several industrials now use, like Envirofan/Bavils, and SMCs in Hong Kong. Apparently they help spread the air out

That has to be one of the best sounding compressors I’ve ever heard. That by the way is a Tecumseh S series compressor. 1 hp is the rating.

I personally worked on about 3,000 room air conditioners from 1979 to 1990 and I never saw one like that one. I worked on some Westinghouse air conditioners that would have dated from the early 1960's. That is a true tank of an air conditioner a real strongly made unit.

@fansandvintage2008

The reason why you don’t see much difference in the speeds is because your using it on 120 volts so if it was running on 100-110 volts you would see a big difference

Those AJ recips are clearly the Energizer Bunnies of the 60s and 70s high capacity units. Treat them well and they will never quit on you. My current restoration project has one (in a Welbilt mid-60s) in need of rust treatment on the bottom of the AJ, as well as on the base pan, steel sides of the condenser and evap, and some corroded aluminum fins to be cleared from the bottom of the condenser (decades of sitting in an inch and a half of Ohio water will do that), but it still blows an unsurprisingly icy wind within 10 seconds. No automatic feature on mine and only 2 fan speeds, but anything more was quite rare for the 60s.

Copper. The owner did the plating himself, with a blued effect.

I have a 16 inch model that the cap blew up in and it also had bad speed variation. The speeds only seemed to get slightly better after replacing it so I think thats just how they are. Be sure to check regularly to make sure the capacitor goop does not spill out as mine did and potentially not have hazardous material on your floor.

The scary thing is that it could explode at the high pressure side because its so old. and it contains CFCs for sure.
@mikafoxx2717
@mikafoxx2717 2 ай бұрын
It's much lower pressure and much thicker tubing than modern stuff - which leaks out after several years whereas this still hasn't after decades.. and CFC's don't harm you at all, this is R-22 as well which was commonly used into the 2000's and only has 5% the ozone depletion of R-12, aka Freon.

Ah the big round compressor. Must be F12 system judging from tubing size. Never to be made again like it.
