I did the same things chugga did as a kid, for the first two stories (and I only got the shop in the third story near the end). I never had trouble though, I even tried to do that flashing puzzle without hitting the flash on the bottom screen, since I didn't realise it could be done. I was a very stupid and stubborn child.
