You can do it however you like! I almost never finish a painting in a single sitting anymore, but if you have the time, you certainly can!

Ive been mixing my paint with medium as youve shown, but i camt seem to mix it correctly where i can go over another color and it not completley cover it. What am i doing wrong?

If it's not covering the color below, it means you're using too much medium. Unless I'm trying to make the color transparent, I really only get medium if the paint is too thick/dry. I tend to use it instead of water. Just tiny bits are needed to smooth out the paint and make it more workable. I hope that helps!
