The observations of a child going through these changes are absolutely accurate, well said. My experience has been that when you see the child starting to become more independent is like a reset on the chance to parent your child. It’s a gift of therapy and should be relished, like a second chance to connect with and guide your child with love ❤

What a quack.... Autism is a disability. But it is not something you can cure. We're born like that. If you're a parent, there is especially one red flag to look out for. If someone tries to sell you a cure for autism, run, for the sake of your kid. There is no scientific proof that autism can be healed, simply cause it is not something you can catch. There are genetical markers that benefit autism. But don't listen to quacks like this.

I myself suffered with Global Developmental Delay as a child, but hasn’t stopped me from learning new things like, languages, words and more. It just takes time sometimes for your brain to store new information. I guess if it wasn’t for the therapy, I wouldn’t be where I am today and probably be more affected by it. I do suffer with depression and social anxiety. I also become obsessive over silly things. I guess I do over analyse at times. Especially when I had braces to correct a dental issue. I kept thinking why do they retract teeth, does it affect airway due to pushing back the upper teeth? Turns out I was right. Now I need jaw surgery. All they did was not listen to me and did what they want. The evil camouflage treatment which made my issue worse. Damn dentists.. They don’t listen to people with disabilities because they assume we have low intelligence. It’s patronising. I think anyone with disabilities can improve and make progress. You just have to believe in yourself and let go of doubts. Sometimes yourself can be your worse enemy at times. I don’t let it stop me at times and continue to still make progress. I have a lot of social problems like, communicating and eye contact. But have slowly improved and don’t have trouble looking people in the eyes as much. I used to just look at the ground whenever I go out in public because I was too scared to see what people would think of me. When you have a disability, you want to feel accepted and not treated differently. Because at the end of the day we are all the same. Thanks for reading and have a great day!

Hi there , as a psychologist, play therapist and AEN teacher (15 years experience) I do agree with Karen. Specialists are all to ready to diagnose children with ASD, whatever the motivation is, often because the child will get more help than if he/she were to be diagnosed with sensory processing disorder and or ADHD or a combination. Also each child presents with very different profiles. It is a spectru., Conditions overlap and there is the issue of comorbidIity.

Half of all diagnosed children don’t have autism? That undermines the clinical judgement of so many other professionals! One hell of a statement to make and extremely irresponsible!

Dear Karen, as a practising Psychologist and auditory training practitioner for close to 20 years, and as a therapist using the Listening Fitness Trainer, I would like to commend you on the quality of these interviews with Paul Madaule (my mentor, colleague and friend). Paul has an incredible wealth of knowledge, experience and passion which is portrayed in your interviews. Paul is able to explain the concepts of hearing, listening, auditory processing, developmental issues and more, with simplicity, finesse, scientific and clinical expertise. The wealth of information in these interviews need to be valued by clinicians in this area of work, and those that are interested in becoming clinicians, but also by clients, parents, and the public that are in search of non-invasive forms of treatment for their listening/auditory processing/receptive language deficits and difficulties. Explaining these concepts that involves an understanding of neuroanatomy and physiology is a challenge when they need to be explained to individuals without a background in neuroscience, audiology, psychology and speech and language pathology, and yet Paul is able to give this information in a manner that is clearly understood. I applaud the production of this wonderful series of interviews with Paul, depicting his 40 years of clinical work and wisdom. Well done Karen, and I look forward to meeting you one day and sharing information as a clinician. Martha Mack Psychologist B.B.Sc., Grad. Dip. Coun., MAPS, MANSA, BCN Honorary Fellow - Melbourne Graduate School of Education, University of Melbourne Student Supervisor - Post Graduate Studies Ed. Dev.
