This is great, but it's pretty much entirely focused on the early, more straightforward stuff. Have you done any videos on the more outside, octatonic, nightmare acid trip, meltdown, style stuff? No one I can find on KZbin has really offered an analysis of Phish's sort of extended, reextended, extended some more, resolution trick. It is an incredible tool, and despite Phish being well known, Ive never heard anyone do it nearly as well as they do (for reference, Chalkdust Torture, NYE 1995 solo is probably the best example, by them, or anyone)....nor the Dead's version of it, which is slower, and more about shifting through different modes in a very strategic way. And sure...diminished over the 5 chord is more or less a fair summary of "the Phish Trick," but in reality its far more sophisticated than that. If you can shed some light on these devices, Im sure many people would be Grateful. I know this already long, but speaking of Phish, I recently stumbled on to a transcription, and realized that much of trey's apparently sophisticated playing, is actually simple, and incredibly sloppy; it's the bass and ESPECIALLY the keys that frame it in a context that gives the impresson that Trey is playing far weirder and more sophisticated stuff than he actually is. Anyways...really appreciate this channel. But yeah...I get the feeling you are capable of sophisticated analysis of some of the weirder stuff these guys do. If so, and you really dont want to post it, I may be forced to pay for a lesson.

I appreciate the question… I just think that that type of advanced exploration is a byproduct of an ensemble being really familiar with each other. That and an ability to disconnect from the established tonal center so that the group can find a new home. Pretty difficult to codify that and reduce it to teachable skill. Plus it’s different every time because of the fact that everyone is breaking the rules differently and at different times… so again it’s a very slippery process to breakdown. I just cut loose and open my ears and try to follow and lead at the same time.
@Illumignostic

@@jacksnax4guitar460 true...but I hear formulas. There are devices and blueprints that were followed. Anyway, just a suggestion. Maybe take some section of the Wembley Dark Star and work through a chunk. I actually payed DSO 10k to spend a few days with them 10 years ago just to have Eaton )worse, he was lying. He went to Berklee. Dick. I really think they thought I wanted to pay them just to be around them) tell me he doesn;t know what hes doing, and the Jerry guy was no help either. The only value in it was getting to play Dark Star with them with Donna present, lol. In light of that...is my assesment of your theoretical and analytical abilities correct? If I took a lesson and presented you with some uber gnarly stuff could you help me analyze it? There are certain passages in the Wembley Dark Star, for example, that...it's like they are using notes that arent even on the fretboard. Getting my head around this aspect of things is the last piece of my musical puzzle that is still evading me. If the answer is having a bass player that is a composer and avante garde jazz master on LSD, etc, I guess Ill just have to accet that and move on, lol. But if you tink you can help, that would be better.

There’s tons of their shows on any of the Archive apps like Relisten, Taper’s Section etc. But check out the video on here from the Gathering of the Vibes, songs like Jones and Windows.
