Hi. I'm from Yakima and want to kayak the columbia for salmon..what areas do u recommend?
@tmkayakfishing82362 ай бұрын
I would look at fishing the mouth of the klickitat river. Check the wind with wind finder. Angler West has some informative KZbin videos. You should check them out. It wouldn't be a bad drive for you

@@tmkayakfishing8236 Makes sense. The only time I see bass chasing bait like that is when the smolt are outmigrating in June and July. That video really got tbe blood flowing though! I could watch smallmouth smashing topwater all day long!

Heck of a day!! Its funny. I have not caught a fish in less than 10 or 15' FOW in quite a while. I guess there must be some groups that like it up shallow and some to hang out deep all the time. I had (mistakenly) thought that the shallow bite was done but you did a ton of damage up shallow. I will have to give that a fair shake next time out. Thanks for posting.

That is a really nice setup. I was wondering if you had any issues getting through the weeds around the launch at Stevenson but it sounds like you don't. If that thing had spot lock it would be perfect.

Spot lock would be nice.

Bummer about having two fish not count! Looks like you still had a great day out there. Next year you will be a force to be reckoned with!

Love the idea. Just purchased a kayak down here in Florida. I live 2/3 mile from the launch and don't have a truck to put the yak in the bed. Was thinking about beach wheels for easier movement across various surfaces to get there. Would you happen to share you cut/part list as of th8s iteration? If you have one that is. Would be most appreciated

You did well fishing a section of river you had only fished once before! You caught some nice fish. I have never fished that section of the Willamette before but it looks a lot like the river around Newburg. Not nearly as much rock as further downstream. I know around Newberg I have had some great days and some days where I really struggled. Always seems harder for me to find the fish in that section of the river but when I get lucky and do find them they seem to be bunched up pretty good. Congrats on getting some quality fish, sorry you could not find a fifth good one.

First and second place finishers both launched out of Newberg
@pdxfisher13 ай бұрын
@@tmkayakfishing8236 There are some nice rocky structures around Newberg (downstream of launch and way upstream of the launch) plus Ash Island has a lot of nice hydrilla beds around it. In between it is a lot of soft bottom with wood that gets trapped in the spring floods.
@pdxfisher13 ай бұрын
Nice largemouth! I have never fished that section of the Willamette but it does not look like there was very much rocky structure where you were fishing. I have scouted it in the Navionics site and I know that there are some nice looking humps about a mile and a quarter upstream from the launch. No idea if they are rocky or not.
@tmkayakfishing82363 ай бұрын
Bet those humps hold fish.

Sorry for the loss of your brother. Great job in helping your wife with the hook in her hand! On the fishing side I also did not get a sniff on top water on Saturday - first time throwing topwater this year with zero bites. I had found some small fish up shallow but all my good (17+") came from 23-35'. At least the smoke did not look bad out where you all were. It was terrible at Stevenson.

You should check out kfnw last tourney of the year coming up on 21st in the Willamette River. You would probably do well

Was just given an Old Town Drigio 106. I know nothing about kayak fishing on the Columbia and am very interested in how you fish on the Columbia. Are you anchored? It doesn’t look you are floating down river?

Thanks for the great report! The wind forecast (and honey dos) kept me at home this weekend :) Man I hate the weeds (and especially the floating mats). It seems like every year the weeds seem to be getting thicker in the Columbia (and the Willamette). In NC and PA one of my favorite methods for fishing through weeds was a Carolina rig. I have not used it much out here since I figure the smallmouth are more rock oriented than weed oriented but maybe I am missing out on a good chunk of the population. The tomato was really a nice bonus catch :)

Hey Tom, I would suggest that you try Texes hooking (no weight) your Senkos, they still shimmy on the fall but you get the added benefit of them being mostly weedless and they seem to last longer. Also when you jerk it after the fall it acts a awful lot like a fluke. I still use the wacky hookup but I've been using the Texas about half the time.

Awesome video. I lived on the Columbia River in two spots, Vancouver and Wenatchee, and never took advantage of fishing it. I'll be back up in the Vancouver area in mid-September and may see if I can get a few hours out on my kayak. I really enjoy your videos, thanks for putting them together.
