I'd recommend if you want the room mics to sound like what the drummer is hearing, work out the distance and then delay the tracks to replicate the return journey to the drummer. Sound travels at just over 1ms per feet. The Haas effect occurs beyond 40ms, so ideally you will get the best results with room mics being greater than or equal to 20 feet away from the kit. A tip learned by watching videos of Steve Alibini recording.

If you have a whole song in perfect synch on the drums, that's okay. Unless there is a part with 16th notes on the bass drums. Then you should only edit them slightly to fix the obvious off parts. A ballad can be edited 100% and sound great.

i'll have to try this. my go to for making "fake" room tracks, is to actually record the drum sound from my daw in my mix room with a LDC and another LDC in the hall just outside the room, essentially creating a real drum room track, but it's more than work than just doing it withhin the daw

Another awesome and very simple video. Thank you. I was struggling with a mix and toying with changing the low end eq between bass and kick and watched your video. Literally followed your advice to a tee and now it sounds wayyyyyyy better. The bass is cutting through with clarity. So simple. Thanks again.

Thank you for addressing this. I had 127 going nonstop and it doesn’t sound realistic. I was getting a lot of clipping with snare and floor toms. Appreciate you!

I got an even better idea. I keep listening to what i like and don't listen to what i don't like. Ok but in seriousness i really don't dig that it's going in this direction i fear what we'll end up with is people making music with just AI because it's convenient for them but i hope i'm wrong 🤞

I'm struggling to make drum bus compression with ezdrummer. Can anyone explain it to me? I'm opening ezdrummer as a virtual instrument and I route every single drum sound on different track. Once I'm done, I create another track, which serve as folder for all other tracks including the one with ezdrummer. The problem is that when I apply compression on the folder fx track, I cannot solo it to hear it separately, because it's in dependency with the original ezdrummer track. If I mute the ezdrummer track, automatically I cannot hear the folder track with compression. Any ideas?

clickbait right? You could not be more wrong. nope, the sims are the waste of time. if you enjoy spending all your time clicking through infinite possiblities then go for it. but i actually enjoy playing my guitar not staring at a screen.

My master is a shadow hills compression very little iron setting. And a waves BB tubes with a touch of saturation. Then maybe depending on track a touch of amek 250 eq little moves. That's it.

Something I was guilty of, and seen HEAPS of people do, is hit their master bus chain waaay too loud... or slamming a single compressor to try and be loud...

Hello brother, can you please guide on how much should be the average final output db level of the mix before exporting for the mastering stage, Thanks..
@SinfulSoulBand9 күн бұрын
He has already answered this in multiple videos. It doesnt matter as long as it isnt clipping, this means, turn up your song as much as you want, as long as you dont hear anything distorting or as long as your total volume isnt passing 0db on your master level, then... Thats it!. Compare to like 5 of your favorite mixed song volumes and youll see something peculiar,.. THERE IS NO SET DB :) pick one and go with it, if your song sounds bad after you turned it up, and its not a "too loud too quiet" issue.... its not the master my friend, its that you have a shitty song.

I have learned alot from frightbox, one of the best takeaways was how "outdated" plugins can still get the job done (if not better than current plugins) He was the first person to really ground me on my obsession of new plugins and how to hunker down with what I am familiar with and get about 75% more mixes finished without worrying about new shiny plugins! Save your money and get to mixing! CHEERS.

SSL Buss Compressor > EQ > Double Tap > Waves Linear Phase MB > Gullfoss > Flatline 2 > Oxford Inflator > FF Pro L2. Depending on mix, average around -6 LUFS.

Loud and without dynamics - a very sad goal
@FrightboxRecording13 күн бұрын
I do this for a living and people want "loud" mixes and masters. If I were to stop producing competitive mixes for my niche, I would no longer be able to do this for a living. I primarily listen to vinyl and beautifully dynamic records that were recorded pre-1980, but that wouldn't work for the bands that I produce. Unfortunately, that's how it works in the real world.

When use saturator on mix bus my mix sound too harsh 😢
@FrightboxRecording13 күн бұрын
The secret is to use it very subtly...like to the point where it's almost doing nothing. It's how it all adds up that matters.
@jeffbridges611013 күн бұрын
Does the order of the chain matter? Like what if you did saturation , eq , comp , Multiband comp , limiter?
@joemarta822113 күн бұрын
For the dynamics based plugins it will. If you're using a hard clipper it trims transients. If you put that before you compressor then it won't have that transient information to react to - either to enhance or control. Good rule of thumb for dynamics order would be compressor -> saturator (soft clipper) -> clipper (hard clipper) -> limited. Not hard and fast and there can be reasons to do it in another order. For EQ and the like, just think about how that EQ would impact the dynamics processing and decide if that is what you want or not. Generally if you are going to tame a buildup with EQ then it can make sense to do that precompression to make the compress work less hard. But it can sound good the other way, too. At the end of the day think it through but ultimately rely on your ears and referencing to check it.

Bobby I am so glad you made this video. I use a very similar master bus chain. I use a limiter at the end to just barely register peak reduction despite having heard from many sources that you shouldn't use a limiter before sending your mix off for mastering. I've learned a ton from you man, keep it coming!
@paulmurillo901413 күн бұрын
what happened to the -3db to -6db headroom in your master mix bus before mastering?
@FrightboxRecording13 күн бұрын
I take the limiter off before using my mastering limiter. The rest of the chain remains on and usually hangs out around -18dB.

Can we see how you would go about setting up a similar mastering chain in reaper with stock plugins? Huge fan of what you’re doing, bro! Thanks for all the informative videos. You’re the best at what you do!
@SinfulSoulBand9 күн бұрын
Yes you can! By going into reaper, and using your stock plugins in the same way he uses his because everything is interchangeable.... Cmon brother hes giving you the answer if you cant figure it out here ill help you... Go to the search bar and search "how to use" and type in what ever plugin you dont understand ! Such as, a saturator, or a compressor, or a... Uh oh... EQ!.... You realize thats all he ever uses? Why dont you know your basic tools brother? Go study
