There is nothing wrong with Diana's rendition of Caro Nome. You are just jealous of Diana.

Do you know of any good audio quality recordings of Giaiotti as the commentatore? All the ones on KZbin are terrible static-y (and he still sounds magnificent)

Ghiarov wins, hands down. Furlanetto sounds puny. I’ve heard him live and was impressed, but that’s a long long time ago. Ghiaurov #1!

Del Mónaco convertía la opera en un circo para lucir sus agudos a costa de desvituar el sentido dramático. En cualquier caso falta la mejor versión de este aria, la de Miguel Fleta

what is this trend of women singing with a sound reminiscent of gagging. I don’t even understand how they produce that sound without throwing up.

Oh, I was there watching the live coverage of this magnificent performance of Otello ever in northern Japan in 1959. I was 15 and flipped almost literally to the floor. The most superb duo singing in history notwithstanding, their subtle and constant body movements (like Japanese actors and actresses might apply) and minute facial expressions, were out of this world. Del Monaco’s pure, sensitive, and full of sotto voce approach was second to none. Then in Japan, his voice was known to be the golden trumpet and revered by many. Tucci equalled Tebaldi in the role. Sweet, indeed. This performance alone might be the best presentation of “Gianell notte densa” while other duo performers would just stand along in the center stage like two huge tree logs. I keep listening to this performance and entire opera through my CD so often. Watch del Monaco and Tucci’s Canio and Nedda in their Japan performance in 1961. Del Monaco’s “Vesti la giubba” was the most dramatic, impacting, moving performance ever in operatic history. No comparison!

I respect all opinions, but saying that Christa Ludwig and Marilyn Horne are bad singers is a really very extravagant opinion.
@sfbirdclub27 күн бұрын
Agreed. The only singers that really are...at the very least...not singing appropriate material for their instrument. Garanca sings Cenerentola divinely...but whoever said she should even ATTEMPT Eboli should be fired as a coach. And Netrebko's lack of much of anything except hutzpah and shouting has always made me angry at impresarios who just want pretty and passionate (even fake passionate will do, those who compare her to Callas, should be sent to Dante's lower bolgia's). But her constant and continuous lack of intonation (flat? sharp?--who cares?) after many years as a very famous and top-of-the-heap international star is simply INEXCUSABLE! I can give newbies to grand opera a break, because of jitters or stage fright or being in completely strange surroundings from the practice room, or the small recital with friends and family in attendance. But there is NO EXCUSE (I know, I already said it) for Netrebko's very bad intonation at her level today. Thanks for reading my rant. Crazy opera guy out.

Mirella Freni had one of the most gorgeous voices of any type in all history. And then she went and married a guy who had one of the most beautiful bass voices of all time!!! Can you imagine them singing a duet???
@trentonwilliams9921Ай бұрын
I know why you’re criticizing Christa Ludwig. She was one of the greatest mezzo Sopranos of all time. And had a beautiful voice. And the same thing about Marilyn Horne. Are you serious? Probably the two greatest mezzo sopranos of the 20th century. You have a lot to learn.

@patrickgallagher3513Ай бұрын
Very well described and well illustrated with examples. One point - your picture of the glorious Luisa Tetrazzini is actually Dame Nellie Melba. There seemed to be a period where dark chest was frowned upon and Maria Callas was used as a case in point, that her use of the chest had encouraged the beat in her upper register that appeared in the later part of her career. Horne is on record as having decried the dangerous use of the chest voice, which is a bit rich when actually she always sounded like a soprano who butched up her low notes. Very few students these days are encourage to sing with a truly open sound and a low larynx as illustrated by Mario del Monaco. The castrati were taught to practice in front of a mirror. Partly so they they could sing without screwing their faces up. BUT actually, screwing one's face up is indicative of tension in either the tongue or the neck, preventing singing on a fully open throat with a low larynx.
