They paid land owners for their house and land and let them live there for the rest of their life then the land and house transferred to The Federal government. So, no, The Federal government did not kick people out of their house immediately. You might also be forgetting the settlers forced native Americans off these same mountains first.

Correction. My family was forced to leave our home in 1937. I returned there, as a child, to see only a chimney remaining. My grandparents were given $335 for our homestead. I have the records.

At least the film is accurate...The government did kick people off the their land. And before anyone comments saying "you have no idea what happened" . I do...my Grand father and his family were kicked off their property...just west of Thortons Gap. So...the real story here is ....If the government wants your land, they will get it.
