At about the 5:57 mark in this video you can kind of see my thumb press the button and hear a beep which is me starting the timer.

"Hit or miss" doesn't sound like it fits with the word "precision". Smallbore prone or benchrest would be for people with interest in "precision."
@CopperStarPrecision
@CopperStarPrecision 8 күн бұрын
Precision is relative to the rules of the sport/competition. A hunter may only have to be as precise as the vital zone of an animal. When you want to shoot a 1/4" target at 50 yards off of an unstable barricade without wind flags or shooting jackets that sounds pretty precise to me. While benchrest and smallbore prone may warrant a higher level of precision it should be expected given the gear used in those disciplines.
@jerryjackson5939
@jerryjackson5939 8 күн бұрын
@@CopperStarPrecision I wouldn't consider hunting a precision sport, not would I consider just hitting something at 50 yards precision. The video I watched about NRL seems to have a decent amount of specific gear: bipods, sandbags. Smallbore prone only requires a sling, and is much more precise than this NRL "plinking."
@CopperStarPrecision
@CopperStarPrecision 8 күн бұрын
Cool, so just hitting a 0.25" steel target at 50 yards is plinking, but hitting a paper target with a 0.5" bull in ARA Benchrest with one-piece rests and wind flags or a 0.719" 10 ring with a shooting jacket, sling, and wind flags in smallbore prone competition is true precision. I guess there's no spectrum of precision, it's either precise or not. Got it.

Best of luck and welcome to the sport! If you haven't shot this style of competition before don't be discouraged by the initial learning curve. Do your best to build stable positions, find the targets, and break clean shots. Speed comes with time so don't worry if you time out on the stages. It's important to practice fundamentals first. Lastly, stay safe and have fun! Let me know how it goes.

Definitely a mixed bag of results. I struggled to build stable positions and timed out on 4 of the 5 stages which wasn't unexpected. I did feel like I understood the stages and only shot the wrong target once that I can remember. I also felt like my dope calls were pretty good so not all bad and I definitely learned a lot and had fun. Thanks for the encouragement and Ill for sure be looking out for next months video.
@CopperStarPrecision
@CopperStarPrecision 9 күн бұрын
Sounds like it was an overall positive experience. I'm glad you had fun! Getting stable in awkward positions is a big part of the learning curve. If you're not shooting prone or some sort of modified prone position there will always be some wobble. With time the wobble will become smaller and smaller and you'll learn when to break your shot to have the best chance of impacting the target. I also attended a match today and did pretty well. I'll have that footage up in the next day or two and hopefully that will give you some ideas of how I tackle the stages. As always at the beginning of each month I will have strategy videos for that month's course of fire. Welcome to the sport!

Thank you! I have the Da'Rail weighted rail and added about 2 lbs. of copper to the front of it to get the balance perfect. Rim thickness on .22s is something I see discussed ad nauseum, but I've yet to see an experiment of meaningful sample size verifying the theory that it improves accuracy. This is probably better to test with cheaper ammo that presumably has a higher variance in rim thickness. Consider grabbing a bulk box, and sorting into "thickest 20%, thinnest 20%, and median 40%". Shim the bolt to match the headspace of the median average, then shoot sets of groups containing 1) the thickest and thinnest ammo mixed together and 2) the median ammo. Would be very curious to see the results from such a procedure, the more groups the better!
@CopperStarPrecision
@CopperStarPrecision 14 күн бұрын
I agree. I definitely plan on doing testing in the near future, but I'm busy preparing for nationals at the moment. Some preliminary testing that I have done shows improvement in group size when I shim the bolt to tighten the headspace from its normal 0.0435 to the 0.0405-0.0395 range for Eley ammo which has a rim thickness of 0.039-0.038 I think there are a few tests to do. One would be to test ammo sorted by rim thickness for groups and SD/ES vs a random selection. This would most apply to bulk ammo like you suggest since most of the match ammo I have seen from Lapua and Eley has at most a 0.001 extreme spread in rim thickness. The other test that comes to mind is matching the rim thickness to the headspace of the rifle via bolt shims to see if there is an improvement. The issue, as you point out, is getting a large enough sample size to make the results statistically significant. I need to dust off my old statistics textbooks and design the experiment and then find a calm day or book an indoor range to do the testing.

@@CopperStarPrecision Also, there's some redneck science claims I've heard from another channel ("STKO") and I'm curious if they hold any bearing among the competition crowd: 1) Humidity's effects on powder burn and chamber fouling have a larger effect on accuracy than any lot-to-lot variance would, and lot-tested ammo doesn't necessarily consistently perform the best in different humidity than what it was initially tested in. 2) The ratio of contact-bearing surface on the bullet to the width of the grooves in rifling has the largest effect on a given barrel's ammo preference (kzbin.info/www/bejne/nH-mqoJ5lryiZpI). Not really seeing these mentioned anywhere outside his channel, and his process isn't exactly scientific :) Was wondering if there's any merit to either of these.

Looking to get into NRL myself and a lot of what you are doing with this build appeals to me as I am on a bit of a budget and the RPR is 1 of the three rifles I was considering to start Building my rig. Would love to get a CZ, but by the time you add the extras that already come included with this platform it prices itself out of my budget. I am planning on adding the weights like you show here, but also want to add an arca rail but will have to wait on 1 of them. In your opinion is it better to do weights first since there are other options for attaching bipods and wait on the arca rail, or would you do the rail first?
@CopperStarPrecision
@CopperStarPrecision 24 күн бұрын
Most NRL22 courses of fire only have one prone stage so a simple bipod attachment point is more than sufficient. The advantage of the full arca rail is if you want to shift the bipod around or use plates with bags attached. All of that isn't necessary when you're just starting out. Having a balanced rifle is going to do way more for your stability on barricades so I would lean in that direction. M-Lok weights are stupid expensive for what they are so if you are mechanically inclined and have access to a decent drill/drill press and a high-quality drill bit that can cut metal you can buy copper or brass bar stock off of amazon. Simply drill holes and add M-Lok hardware (you will need to get longer screws from the hardware store). A 1"x6" bar of copper or brass that is 3/8" thick should weigh around 11oz which is equivalent to a pair of MDT chassis weights. The MDT wights cost $60 and for about $25-$30 in materials and hardware you can make your own. M LOK Nuts: amzn.to/3RbNy0t Copper Bar: amzn.to/4c6blqV Brass Bar: amzn.to/3xavo8u In the video I used two sets of MDT weights, but for half the price you can put a copper or brass bar on each side and get the same effect and it will cost you about 50% of what the name brand weights cost. Hope that helps.

Excellent video. New here to the channel, sub'd. I have used the CZ platform for several years in competition, although not exclusively. I used to shoot in USBR matches on the Green Monster target. I held my own in most matches. The Sporter Class was my focus, and the 452 was my choice. I am pretty sure replacement of the firing pin would not be allowed, however polishing and reshaping the factory pin would be allowed. Your video was well detailed and would be something I would consider. As a note, I have actually found the Japanese Winchester 52 copies to be, on some days, a bit better than the CZ in competition sporter class, but not always. They are much more of an issue on bedding and consistency than the CZ series. Replacing the spring also would not be allowed, but I am not sure about the cocking indicator. The 452 doesn't have that feature, but the idea you discuss with the steel flat to give the spring something more consistent contact with is something I would probably try to copy. How’s that new firing pin do against your chamber if dry fired? Definitely not a recommendation practice but sometimes it happens. 🤷‍♂️
@CopperStarPrecision
@CopperStarPrecision 25 күн бұрын
While CZ says you shouldn't dry fire the rifle, I haven't found it to be a major issue. The firing pin is stronger in the 457 vs the older models. Furthermore, the firing pin itself has a stop built in where the firing pin stops on the pin that is used to hold the rear shroud/firing pin spring together. This modified firing pin has the part that might contact the edge of the chamber removed so it should be even less prone to peening the barrel face.

@@CopperStarPrecision I have had firing pins break (albeit not CZ) because of the firing pin being stopped by the shroud pin . The CZ pin is pretty robust, so I'd think risk would be small. Nonetheless, I was surprised when my ruger firing pin broke in half at this point of contact . On top of that , Ruger claimed it was safe to dry fire. Now here's where it matters. IF the firing pin breaks at this point, the rifle may still fire, but the firing pin will not retract and ejection problems occur. However , now the firing pin has no stop. If you unknowingly dry fire with the pin broken , It will peen the barrel. YMMV.

Shimming rim thickness all depends on the chamfer of the rifle's chamber. Save your money from "rabbit hole" gauge prices and detail the rim thickness to your rifle... It does require more work☹ 223 case is great for comparing different brands of ammo... Old school

Lot testing will always be key, but matching the headspace to rim thickness can usually give you a better starting point for a specific brand of ammo. My MTR headspace is 43-43.5 thou and it likes SK/Lapua which makes sense. I've never found any Eley ammo that shoots well since the rim thickness is closer to 39 thou. If I wanted to shoot Eley I would need to shim the bolt for tighter headspace.
