What vise is that? It's cool looking. I'm definitely going to subscribe to your channel. Great work.
@slickwillyfly715813 сағат бұрын
It is a very inexpensive vise called a Dana Vise. I have had it for about 4 years and so far it works for me. If you ask me the pros and cons I would sa a big Pro is that I can firmly fit large hooks in the clamp. I have tied many 4/0 saltwater flies on this vise. On the cons side I wish the base would have been a little heavier and the clamps are too bulky for really small dry flies. I mostly tie large flies so I make it work on those ocasions when I tie freshwater flies. I personally am not made of money and have a kid in college so the price was a big part in chosing this vice. I'm born in the 60s so my grandparents and parents survived the World Wars and the depresion meaning regardless of my economic cituation I plan to use this vise until it breaks.

I also love that comb. I have no idea the brand. It has no writing on it, but I can tell you that I picked it up at my local pharmacy. It is actually inteded for lice. You will find it where they sell the lice shampoo. It was a 2 pack with a longer and shorter variant. The one in the video is the longer. Thanks for watching and good luck catching, SWF.

@slickwillyfly715822 күн бұрын
I have spent countless hours fishing on the West Coast but ususally south of Naples. If I was on the outside, for example on a grass flat around Pavillion Key, the Dinner Bell is definately a fly I would use. I might also use a large Big Tasty, a Cllouser Minow or any of my Critter varients. Those are all solid choices that produce fish. I often start with a large fly and work my way smaller until I start getting bites. I find that the Snook tend to like the larger flies. If I start getting a lot of Ladyfish action,I try to use a heavier fly, I try to get it closer to the bottom. I have had luck getting into the specs and away from the Ladyfish that way. If you think there might be some Tarpon around you need to consider the hook size. More than once have I hooked a surprise Tarpon while searcing for Snook or Redfish. I hope this helps and I hope you will send some fish pictures. Good Luck Catching, SWF

Hi Slick Willy (William Sutton) and two others escaped from Holmesburg Prison, Willy was caught, Frederick J Tenuto has never been caught to my knowledge and the other guy was shot and killed a few blocks from the prison. Don't know if you know how the name ''slick willy'' got started. He was a bank robber in Philadelphia who escaped from Holmesburg Prison in the 40s and was recaptured. When asked why he targeted banks to rob, he replied ''that's where the money is" Ron C Ruskin FL

Great story, I did not knkow any of that. My version of Slick Willy was from my daughter when she was about 7 or 8 years old. We had just arrived at the boat ramp after a great day on the water and some people that had watched us were asking her uncle about the flies we were using. He was explaining that we tie our flies when my daughter jumped into the conversation and explained they are Slick WIlly Flies. It was very surprising because she was normally very shy but the name stuck. Thanks for watching the video and good luck catching, SWF.

Hi I have two Danvise left. I have all the others, Renzetti's, Norvise, HMH, Stonfo, Dyna King, Regal, Peak, Wolff as well as a myriad of others. I found over the years that the Danvise is easiest to adjust the jaws for any range of hooks. I see others don't like it, but I do. Use it all day and that is 7 days a week. The others require too much time fooling with them to make an adjustment. So, for me, I like the Danvise and I am sure that it is my problem that I don't like the others as much as the one I am using. Keep up the tying and videos. Ron C Ruskin FL
@rc28012 ай бұрын
Hi Noticed that you are using a Danvise. I taught fly tying a number of years back and bought 10 of them. I have 2 of them now. I also have about 18 other vises. Truth is, I like the Danvise better than any of my other vises. It is the only vise that I can tie on that does not require a lot of adjustments on the jaws. I have seen a lot of bad publicity on this vise, but it is my go to vise. Love using mine and I tie about 5 hours each day. Keep on tying and good luck. Ron C Ruskin FL
@slickwillyfly71582 ай бұрын
My Danvise works for me. I have often considered buying a high end vise but its hard to spend the money while my Danvise is not broken. While I am comfortable, I don't consider myself rich. I need to consider how I spend my dissposable income and in my current situation, I would rather spend more on fishing than on tying tools. I will be tying on my Danvise until it breaks, if it ever does. On that day, I will purchase the vise that makes sense for me then. Thanks for watching and good luck catching, SWF.

I'm really gIlad you like the fly. I love the black and purple when im fishing in Chockoloskee on the west coast of South Florida. I learned to use that color combo when I was visiting a friend that lives in Louisiana. I actually have a few flies that I tie with Faux Bucktail but I try to not push too many brands. I tie some streamers where I blend colors and I find that the Faux Bucktails is great for blending colors. I blend it with enough natural Bucktail so that the flies have some good action. I can definately see how it would work great on the contest fly. I'm going to need to order some. Thanks for the tip and for watching the video. Good luck catching, SWF.

I never use stainless hooks on flies for fresh water. If it happens to break off in a fish’s mouth it’s there for a long time. Regular hooks will eventually rust and fall out. Mashing the barb would help. Nice clouser pattern though. Just my thoughts.
@slickwillyfly71583 ай бұрын
I see your point and will probably reconsider my approach. Before moving to Sweden 90% of my fishing was saltwaterr and ocasionally I would fish for Largemouth or Peackock Bass in South Florida. Now I spend a fair amount of time chasing Pike and Trout. I never use stainless on my trout flies but I should probably stay away from stainless hooks for the Pike. Thanks for the tip. SWF

imho way too much material's used. ep fibers are pretty stiff and can keep shape of the fly without making it bulk. the sparse the fly the less water it holds and the easier it's to cast.

Big Tasty, sounds good enough to eat.....
@slickwillyfly71584 ай бұрын
The fish agree. I learned to tie the Big Tasty about 30 years ago, when I met my wife's brother and I often joke that learning this pattern is the best thing that came from us getting together. He had learned the pattern from friends in Sweden and they used it chasing Browns, Rainbows and Char. For decades we called it our Marabou Fly. I was living in South Florida and chasing inshore saltwater fish. Both of us sharing story after story of new personal best fish. About 10 years ago I moved to Sweden so that my wife could take care of her elderly parents but the Big Tasty remained my mst productive fly. Then one summer my best friend from Florida came for a visit and we took a 6 week fishing trip to Norway and Northern Sweden and caught so many fish and were having such a great itme that the name Big Tasty was born. There are dozens of videos on Marabou Streamers. Marabou is a great tying material but I really think that removing the stem and using the dubbing loop to attach the Marabou makes this version really durable. Thanks for watching and good luck catching, SWF.

@@johnthomas5806 The wrap around trick works great when I want to keep the colors seperated. Sometimes I want to blend the colors and don't use it, it all depends on what fly I am making. Thanks for the kind words, I have a couple of Trout fly videos coming for the next few weeks, it's trout season where I live, but then it's back to my roots and Saltwater flies. I purchased my fly holders online. Some online shops list them as hackle pliers. I took my time and nicely drilled a piece of wood so they wood look good and have a nice place to sit when I dry or cure flies but there are plenty of options that go with the holders. I find that I like more room between the flies for my larger streamers so I made my own. If you buy online be aware that they come is sizes. I made the mistake once of ordering and when they arrived they were too small for my saltwater hooks. Thanks again for watching. Don't forget to subscribe to the chanel and good luck catching. SWF

Thanks for the video! I'm fly fishing for the first time in June in Utah. Any advice on fly choices? We plan to fish from float tubes mostly. Thanks
@slickwillyfly71586 ай бұрын
The best advice I can give you is to visit the local flyshops and ask the locals about what is working during the time you're there. There is nothing better than local knowledge. I would recomend you purchase something, even if it's small. We need to support the local fly shops or they won't survive. That being said, I don't go anywhere without a selection of my Big Tasty fly ,Hares Ear and Pheasant Tail nymphs, Streaking Caddis, Adams, and Spent Spinners. You will find some people get weird regarding Fly Fishing methods. Some people are Dry fly only. Some people are OK with Dries and Nymphs but not Streamers. Personally I say as long as you are casting a fly rod and obeying all the local regulations, it is OK with me. I don't get to fish as often as like so I use what ever method is going to get bites. I also know the 95% of what fish eat is below the surface. FYI, this coming Friday I have a new, better, Big Tasty video releasing. Thanks for watching and good luck catching, SWF.
