One of first caravan designs was with the bed elevated with storage underneath. It didn’t work for us. Went with 2 foam mattresses that you can stack during the day.

Thanks for sharing I 10:31 have been trying to figure out a way to be able to access the back of the van I have a dodge 2019 caravan and I want to put it refrigerator in the back and be able to access it from inside I believe this design will help do that I also love the fact that it's easy to store some of the things people build is so heavy and take up so much space

I had seen this video a couple of years ago. It was a great setup but did not go with the wider mattress we had already brought. Fast forward to now. I have been wanting to invite my brother to camp with us. My brother will sleep in the tent. This setup is versital, There can be three seats for the drive and the one bed folded in back. He can use the wider mattress my husband and I have in the tent.

Hi there i was wondering after 3 years how your beautiful window coverings worked out? Did you find moisture a problem with the cotton fabric? They looked sensational.
@RandomStuffWithBill
@RandomStuffWithBill 2 ай бұрын
No issues with moisture, all four that go in doors and rear windows are solid fitting the rear one (because we used the lift gate alot) sort of needed some tlc with more bnading added so it would fit more snug as weight of lift gate being open sort of made it sag and come out a bit, but an extra bead of banding fixed that around edges so it fits more snug. The thing we added not in the video from just needing it was some pull straps, once they were in the windows it was hard (for me at least with no nails) to get my fingers in there to pull them OUT lol, but Stacey added some scrap strips of strap so I would have mini pull out strips much easier.

Hi there nice builds. I’m just wondering what the dimensions are for the bed as well as the height of the bed and are you all the way to the back door or do you have some space back door there before you get to the door?

Looks great. Curious though if it would have made sense to keep a foil side exposed to reflect the thermal energy during the day

So here's the thing I get that the silver would reflect sun and I could cut just silver pieces for that, but its SO not stealth you see it even with the van windows tinted, in cases where we just wanted to park and not be noticed the black is what we wanted to not be detected, it ends up looking like limo tint from a distance. If i was like middle of summer arizona desert 100+ degrees yep i'd want to pop the silver insert in window then the black one behind it as sort of a insulator, we tend to not camp in the van in extreme heat or cold really though this was all about the stealth aspect.

I've tried to do this, but I just can't get the templates right 😕 You make it look so easy... My paper was sliding around everywhere - I tried to use masking tape to hold it in place but it just peeled off 😔

New here, love this. I was just talking with the hubs about making our own. Just to fit our own van. I had the same exact method in my head. Now, off to the van. Thank you, I appreciate that someone did it too so i didn't feel like I was wrong in my thinking. Love that so many chimed in too. Thank you community❤

How do you prop up the back of the bed into a lounger?
@RandomStuffWithBill
@RandomStuffWithBill 4 ай бұрын
I didn’t show it but I had a 2x4 with two short T like pieces that sat in the bottom base area and propped up against the back area. I had cut it a few times till I had the right angle for the chair to be in recline mode.

So you didn't leave one side reflective to face out during the day to keep it cool? It seems like dark fabric on both sides would heat up the van.

I am still using them 3 years later, i did have stacey sew me on some pull tabs and on my rear window i had to have her add just a tad more of that binder outter edge part, it just wasn't staying up as well after being used a half dozen times or so, the side windows tho are super solid still, just that back one needed some extra material to stay in place.

Great video. I’ve been looking at the same chair bed you have from the same dealer just wondering if it’s a really soft cushion or a little firmer. I would need a little firmer and you never know when you are buying stuff without getting to sit on it.
@RandomStuffWithBill
@RandomStuffWithBill 8 ай бұрын
I'd say it's on the firmer side as a big tall guy I felt supported not falling down into a beanbag type soft feeling, Stacey being smaller and lighter had no issues with her hip hurting either so for that I am pretty happy with them still and they haven't lost shape either. The only thing they could improve on is offering a cover, we just always use sheets so we can strip and wash them, but a washable cover would be really nice. Bill :)

Ikea has a lot of useful components. However, your bed platform has no ventilation. We have bed bases, spring mattresses and bed slats for a reason, the human body puts out up to 2 litres (quarts) of sweat per night and ventikation is how you get rid of the moisture. This might not matter if you're not living in your vehicle every day but could easily lead to a mold problem and bleaching and even cutting out the affected area diesn't work as what you see are the bloom, the mycelium of the mold is probably throughout all the material and whatever other organic material it touches. Just drilling a holes in the bed platform or routing grooves into it should take care of the ventilation problem as would furring strips or just using Ikea's bedslats on top. If you don't want to fix your ventilation problem, there are anti-fungal paints but they work by containing toxic heavy metals so not something you want to use. You can usually rent an anti-mold fogger from Home Depot and embue everything porous in your vehicle with anti-mold chemicals namely the toxic heavy metals. There's usually a high demand for those foggers after a flood say from a hurricane or tropical storm. Mind you, only some molds are dangerous to your health and you can't tell which you have without having a sample tested. Note the sweat is also why foam mattresses especially memory foam start to stink after awhile. Again ventilation is key to preventing this but foam mattresses are a lot harder to ventilate. There are spring mattresses with hinges to alliw them to be bent in certain places such as to raise your head or feet but foam mattresses have largely displaced them. Ikea sells a very thing bedspring mattress that can tolerate some folding. Note, the moisture problem is another reason why traditional bedspring mattresses are supposed to be occasionally flipped.

yep we have added vent holes in the bases since making the video :)

in our pinned comment - We have learned that providing air flow on the platform is important to reduce the chance of mold in our foam, so we will be adding some drilled holes to provide for this.
