I Built my K2 in 2019. They stopped putting resistors in order of use on a paper strip. They were all stuffed in a bag and had to individually locate them.

Is this common in 30s, 40,s 50s radios? Or is it specific to a certain decade?

If you have the "positive rail" going to ground then you have a problem. The positive side of one cap should be going to the + of the hv rectifier board. The "center tap" as you are calling it goes to one side of the hv winding. This is where one + and one - of the caps are connected. The - of the other cap should be going to ground.

Love your videos. Simple question is what is the PCB vise you are using and where did you get it. Can't find one like it anywhere. 73

Thank you Tom!!! Your matter of fact descriptions, and disclaimer were wonderful. You addressed the same issue I am currently struggling with as far as the IF cans. I had a clear idea before the video of the process, but doubted myself on capacitance values. It was excellent to witness your dissection, as I have a better idea now of what to expect. I had only a general idea of alignment, but seeing you work through the process was brilliant! Thank you so much for posting, and above all, thank you for your service, and the difference you make in our world through your profession.

I believe the 1600v pink caps were actually original, every O8 I've been able to find pictures of had the same ones installed. What do you think Heathkit's logic was behind the strange terminal strip on the back (below the crt socket) with wire loops on almost every column? The manual doesn't describe what this was intended for or why someone would want to change those connections.

Nice demo! I’m curious what version of the SP-600 is this? What number is after the JX suffix? The tuning and bandswitch action an an SP-600 are so smooooth! I recently acquired a very early 600 with lighter colored front panel and red lettering. It’s a JX with no numerical suffix. I’ve seen an HQ-129 on the bench in one of your other videos - you must be a Hammarlund Man. ;-)

Bought and built K2 #999 back in the late 90s. Would never sully the old girl by adding the 100 watt option. You want a QRO radio? Get an Icom, Kenwood, or Yaesu.

Thomas, late to the dance here but wanted to give you a pat on the back for your homespun but wonderful K-2 build videos! Those - and the others on your channel - are exceedingly fun to watch because they bring back fond memories of my building of good ol' #999! The K-2 is truly a "build" while the subsequent Elecraft radios are more appropriately an "assembly" exercise. (No soldering done for the latter.) Also hoping you have begun your retirement 9at this writing (October 2022) and are working your way through your stockpile of projects! I retired five years ago this month and like you, stocked up on kits and projects beforehand. Also, a side bonus is maintaining the historic test gear too. Like you, I have a venerable AN/URM-25D (two, in fact) that I revived and had to bring "out of the bullpen" to replace my "southbound" Wavetek 3001. Anyway, good luck with your endeavors and keep on trucking, old son! 72 de William, k6whp dit dit

While I come from the Hallicrafters world, and have never had the privilege of tuning a Hammarlumd, I was always of the belief that crystal filters and phasing was more useful for CW and SSB, less so for AM. At least, in the manual for my Hallicrafters SX-42, the examples given are for CW signals. Your example seems to be more what a notch filter in today’s sets might be used for.

I bought one sometime back, and I'm just getting around to recapping it and replacing some of the resistors. On the schematic and parts list, there are three components that look like 1/8th watt carbon resistors.According to the parts list, they are bakelite capacitors and one of them, which goes to the antenna terminals,is broken in half.

Hi Thomas, I have the identical radio. I bought a tone encoder, a Com-Spec TE-32 to be exact. Have you a wiring diagram that shows how the encoder gets wired into the radio? I haven't been able to locate one. I surely need some help. Like you, I want to use my unit as my 2 meter base radio. Can you or any one else advise me? Thank you. 73 Mike K2PRR.

Tom good to see a video for you. I am not the best at working on electronic devices but, I have had some success and other times I have had those radios that really had me stumped. That's why I am luckier than most my brother Ron has been in the electronics field for 50 years designs and builds circuits builds his own equipment. So if I am stumped I contact him and he comes over he lives a block and a half from me.

Tom, thanks for posting your video. I agree that radio repair videos on some KZbin seem to fall into a rut, showing basics or yet another capacitor repair, but to me what makes each video unique and each channel special are the different models that get repaired. Before I open up my next project radio I’ll search here on KZbin to see if someone has been inside one before. A dry run so to speak on what I will encounter.

If you remove a speaker wire you won't have to hear the noise. Just connect a meter lead on the disconnected wire & keep your input signal & radio volume low.

Tom, for future reference, once you get the scope working correctly, it is a very accurate wattmeter. Just remember: Power = Vpp^2/400 In other words, square the p-p voltage measurement and divide by 400 and that is your power ourput.
