Further to my previous post, The Prince of Wales was the first pub I went in to buy a drink and yes I was under age but I had heard so much about Skol Larger I wanted to taste it, unbeknown to me it was a lady up the road to where I lived who was a bar lady there, she said you are under age get out she said go now or else I will tell your dad, with that remark I was gone like a shot! Happy days remembered!

65 years ago my brother along with myself used to hunt for frogs in the little overgrown field at the back of the pub or walk down the seven stiles bridle way at the side to fish one of the two streams that crossed the path along its route there was also a pond opposite the gypsy camp but that got polluted which put an end to the fishing but the best fishing was in the second stream although the farmer used to chase you off if he caught you , the thing I will always remember is that along part of its route the path ran alongside the golf course and at times the bushes in the hedge used to be smothered in butterflies

Thank you for watching and sharing your memories! Ravenshill Road must have been a great place to grow up, and it sounds like you have some amazing stories from the local pubs. It's always fascinating to hear from people who experienced these places in their prime. Do you have a favorite memory or pub from back then?

@NigelAskill so now instead of pub to pub we now have to navigate Birmingham from mosque to mosque......I remember when the only direction was for one...,"you go up past the mosque".....

People haven't got enough money to go it to pubs because of poverty and Tories have caused this, the lower classes have been stripped of their jobs and their means of earning enough money to lead a normal life.

I worked in The Tower for 10 years. It closed because the DHSS were installing a new computer system. There was no room within The Tower for the wiring so staff were moved into Five Ways House next door and The Tower abandoned. Not sick building syndrome. I loved working in The Tower and House.

Yes and you have to blame Thatcher for that. Got rid of All British Brewers for her corporate friends to make a buck by scamming us. £10 a pint in two pubs in my city. For what, water which comes free from the sky. I think the way it tastes it is died to look like beer and as for Larger. Urine is all that is.

I remember the packed bus queue at the bus stop right outside by the wall from the Comp school. Sat on the wall one Sunday drinking and a fight kicked off at the front bar, it was comical in a way to watch all the older patrons rushing to get out with walking sticks all over the place.

Crossways Court Pub? It was just the Crossways… I remember the G.O lounge, and function room where they held discos in the 80s. Dad went there a lot. Always came home with crisps from the off Licence… kzbin.info/www/bejne/sJzTe3xjpK9rmbcsi=-TZCEtqPEdXX9fWp

This is my son's you tube account so ignore the name, my grandad used to drink here from the 1930s onwards my auntie was the cleaner in the 70s and my cousin wife worked the bar , I met my ex husband there in 1976 and all his brothers drank there , it was ok back in the day it had it's moments but on the whole it wasn't any different from any other local , it's a shame most local pubs have gone hub of the community and all that , but has a kingstanding girl can I just say I always thought the crossways stood in kingstanding Not Perry common ,when you crossed the road that was Perry common , I maybe wrong anyway thanks for the memories 😊

While it is sad such an old building is abandoned, it isn't the oldest in Birmingham. Built in 1368, The Old Crown in Digbest has the honour. Though not even that can match up to The Porch House in Stow on Wold, built in 947 it is thought.

Yes it had quite a big Irish connection - the O'Donells who ran it in the 70/80/90's had Irish connections too but the Hay Mills Tavern opposite had a bigger Irish customer base.

I played football in the pub carpark which was quite big before the new road ran through it. Hay MIlls was a lovely area, lots of indy shops, Tayes, Braggs, Farmers, Hay Mills Chippy, Kwik-Save, Co-op... Red Hill Tavern, Hay Mills Tavern, The Plough... a great community where everyone stopped and chatted. Look at it now.. post nuclear explosion... shame indeed.

What utter rubbish, not all shops in Corporaion Street are boarded up as a lot of the windows that look boarded up are in fact looking into shops and it depends when this was filled as at most times Corporation Street is packed and all the roads comming off Corporation Street have shops open on them, The tram has nothing to do with Birmingham City Council as it is run by Transport for West Midlands run by the West Midlands County Council,as for the German Market, this is a once a year Xmas thing and is run in conjunction with Frankfurt City Council and is why it is called ""The Birmingham Frankfurt German Xmas Market". Birmingham Corporation Street has been like this since the 1970's exept the Buses were moved out as were the cars which caused traffic jams in Corporation Stret and New Street so there is no Tram Crisis in fact it has made Corporation street safer
@joyfuladventureaudits
@joyfuladventureaudits 9 күн бұрын
You make some fair points, but I respectfully disagree. Corporation Street is struggling, with many empty storefronts. The tram may have impacted footfall, and redirecting Christmas market funds could help revitalize businesses. I'm open to hearing your ideas on solutions to support this iconic high street. What do you think could bring life back to Corporation Street?
@peterwilliamallen1063
@peterwilliamallen1063 9 күн бұрын
@@joyfuladventureaudits First of all do you live in Birmingham like I do, next when did you film this as Corporation Street on Friday's and Weekends is full of shoppers and not all shops are boarded up, some that have adverts in their windows are actually frontages to larger shops behined the Glass and the only major shop that is closed is the old C&A shop in lower corporation street, the tram actuly brings as many people into corporation street as did all the Buses that ran up it and it hasn't affected New Street which is pedestranised as well and at the top of corporation street Buses still drop off and pick up in it. The Frankfurt German Christmas Market which is run in conjunction with Frankfurt City Council is the largest authentic German/Austrian Christmas Market in the UK and out side of Germany and Austria and brings in visitors from all over the world to see it such as Japan, America, Ireland and all parts of the UK and no market funds diverted from this would help the shops exept Birmingham would loose a massive tourist thing at Christmas by loosing the Christmas Market not only that the shops are not owned by Birmingham City Council but private landlords that are charging too much for rent for these shops so the only answer is that the Landlords drop their rent fees fr these shops
@peterbattey8263
@peterbattey8263 10 күн бұрын
The town centre is not council owned all these buildings are owned by private developers who charge extortionate rents to run a business here. Look at Birmingham as a whole or come to that any major city, town or village in the UK, the story's the same, empty shops, pubs, wine bars the list goes on. People work and shop online now, too idle to get up off their arses to do anything where it means walking about. Ok they may go the gym, why??? It wouldn't surprise me that they'll be doing that online very soon. The plan is to have everyone not moving very far from where you live what in certain terms is called a gulag. Move beyond that area and you will be penalised.

Whoa, let's be real here. Corporation Street is struggling, with too many empty storefronts. The tram may have hurt business, and redirecting Christmas market funds could help. But you raise fair points - this is a nationwide problem driven by private landlords and online shopping. I clearly missed the bigger picture. So what do you think could actually revive this iconic high street? I'm open to your ideas on solutions.

The change in our culture in Birmingham is to blame. The super diversity has destroyed the city centre. The vibe has completely changed. As a child with my mom you couldn’t move on Bull St, New St, Corporation St. It’s now ghost town! Very sad!
