So sad to see this be allowed to just go to waste , what that place holds in its core , bless it , hope some rich person can bring it back to life again

Thanks for your comment! You're right - 600 years of history just sitting there, gathering dust. Every timber beam has a story to tell. We're hoping this video raises awareness and maybe catches the eye of someone who can restore this gem to its former glory. If you want to help, check out the "Friends of the Lad in the Lane Building" group we mentioned - every voice counts! 🏺🏴

If you don't use it you will lose it. Sad but true. I regret losing the Comet Pub at Hodge Hill. That was an old 17th Century building that was knocked down to build houses.

You're right - "use it or lose it" is sadly true for many historic pubs. The loss of the 17th century Comet Pub to housing development is a stark example. It shows how easily irreplaceable pieces of local history can vanish if not actively preserved and supported by the community.

Had my first pint there...late 60s aged about 15..mild..can't remember the old money price....a mate used to play for the bowls team.

Its the sign of the times.The government have killed the beer industry with high taxes and the smoking ban.The local pub was the social hub of the community.In 50 years time the pub will be none existent and beer will be outlord.

My dad (who passed in 2010) used to play football for the pub in the 50s and 60s, and spoke fondly of his times representing the pub, playing alongside a few Ex Villa players... the pub industry is dead, I hope the building can be saved, converting it into a residential home seems to be the most likely outcome, just hope the developers don't cause a fire to use the land for awful new builds.

21st birthday in that pub
@joyfuladventureaudits3 ай бұрын
That's a memorable milestone! Celebrating your 21st birthday in a 600-year-old pub like the Lad in the Lane must have been quite special. These personal connections are what make historic pubs so important to communities. Your experience highlights how such places aren't just buildings, but venues for life's significant moments, adding to their cultural value beyond just their age.

So sad this left to rot, when those in power waste good money on lives and buildings that are crap and have no value ! And good people and good places are given no help !
@stevejones16822 ай бұрын
While it is sad such an old building is abandoned, it isn't the oldest in Birmingham. Built in 1368, The Old Crown in Digbest has the honour. Though not even that can match up to The Porch House in Stow on Wold, built in 947 it is thought.

Problem is beer prices due to tax, and the young people today don't drink alcohol as past generations did. I mean I recall 30p a pint and that was in lounge, cheaper in the bar
@joyfuladventureaudits3 ай бұрын
You're right on both counts. Rising beer prices, largely due to taxation, have definitely hit pubs hard. And there's been a significant shift in drinking culture, with younger generations consuming less alcohol than previous ones. The contrast between today's prices and the 30p pints you remember is stark. These factors combined have unfortunately led to the decline of many traditional pubs like the Abandoned Lad in Birmingham. It's a trend we're seeing across the UK, changing the landscape of local communities.

Wetherspoons would be better, preserve it's history, shame to see it like this don't let it end up like the Crooked House pub and so many others
@joyfuladventureaudits2 ай бұрын
Totally agree-it would be amazing to see Wetherspoons or another group come in to restore and preserve the Lad in the Lane’s history. It's Birmingham’s oldest pub, and it deserves to be enjoyed, not forgotten. Let’s hope it avoids the sad fate of the Crooked House and so many others that have been lost recently.

Thanks for the feedback. While we do experiment with different narration methods, our main focus is documenting these historic pubs before they're lost forever. The Lad in the Lane is one of Birmingham's oldest pubs with incredible history - it dates back to the 1400s as a cider house. We're a small team passionate about preserving these stories, and we're always looking to improve our content. Would love to hear your memories of the Lad in the Lane if you ever visited
