The most extreme geocaching I've done is scuba caching. The deepest I've found a cache at is ~70 ft. The hardest part is signing the log books with several layers of gloves on while also maintaining neutral buoyancy and not hitting the bottom. It's fun to combine two of my hobbies with dive caching.

We (islandfinders) love Extreme Geocaching! Our favorite caching is hunting down high DT caches (we’ve completed 25 Fizzy loops) that often bring us to extreme terrains. Bushwhackin? Love it! Tree climbs? Fun! Wading through swamps? Yup! Most woodticks in one day? 3! I insist on wearing shorts and a t-shirt in hot weather, that means I return from my annual drive to California covered in poison oak - not so much fun, but you gotta do what you gotta do! Caves? Love some, some not so much, but again you gotta do them! Chopping through walls of blackberries? Many times! Kayaking to islands? For sure! How about a 7 hour hike to get one extreme cache? Sure - Kiwi Falls (GC58628)! Forty-two summits in the Sooke Hills? Done them all! What is the most extreme cache that we’ve done? Easily it’s GC2B1YB - #50 PURE INSANITY. Imagine climbing a 100 foot, rusty, rickety, ladder that snakes up the side of a cliff. Of course the dismount is totally sketchy. Not too hard to find the cache once at the top, you wish the find would take longer, because… then you have to come back down the ladder! In all of our 11,000+ finds I’ve never felt like I could truly die retrieving a cache except for this one. Not for the faint of heart. The trip back down the ladder is just as scary as the trip up, maybe even worse. Once back down on the ground I dropped down and kissed the ground! The real crazy thing is that we gave that cache a favorite point! Thanks Landsharkz for the opportunity to share our Extreme Geocaching adventures.

My favorite extreme geocache adventure was when bearclaw1 and I kayaked to Saltspring Island, and I found a huge house-sized rock that had a cave entrance. I did what I think is an extreme geocache today. Went after a cache called Staveside. We started the hike at Florence Lake road and had to bushwhack a good 700m to GZ. Going over and under fallen trees, jumping rocks in the stream, avoiding swampy areas and avoiding stinging nettle plants. We did find an easier but longer hike out. Cache was published in 2004 but only has 92 find logs. Any cache that can take a long time to get to or requires climbing or kayaking to is an extreme cache in my books.

There is an island in the Fraser River called Douglas Island. Zeppelin94 and I paddled our inflatable kayaks across to explore this cool place. There are about seven caches on the island. You need to do some major bushwhacking/deer trail-finding to find them. It was pretty easy to get to the island, as the slack tide was much nicer. Paddling back to the mainland was another story. You can really feel the power of the Fraser when the current picks up. Silent, but quick! We just barely had the strength to get ourselves back to the beach that we launched from, otherwise we'd be drifting on down to New Westminster!

I too enjoy extreme geocaching adventures! One particularly memorable one was hiking to the top of the Sleeping Giant near Thunder Bay, Ontario. There is a virtual geocache (GC8911D) at the top which thankfully only requires posting a photo. To get to this virtual cache we biked 7km on a rough road/trail and then left our bikes chained to a bike rack and started the 5km hike up the side of the giant. The trail was rugged, lots of switchbacks and up, up, up. Of course it was down, down, down on the way back! The trip took a full day but it was totally worth it and we were rewarded with some amazing views of Lake Superior once we reached the top!

Extreme to me was cache this winter in CA. It was rated as a 2, 2 1/2. We looked at the peak straight ahead and said, how hard can this be? About a quarter of a mile slightly up hill and onto a peak. Well, aside from slipping and sliding on shale like rocks going up, all was well. We owed at the coords and it was on the back side of the peak......with a small gully to get over and the other side was straight down sheer walls with only one little plateau of a landing to drop yourself onto. No room for two so Lightningbolt46 did the deed. One there he easily found the container tucked in a crevice. But there sure was no room for both of us on that little shelf of a landing. Me the rating should have been a 1, 5! Coords were spot on. A lot of scary fun!

I've only found a couple that I would be willing to call "extreme", but one was the very first geocache I found. It required kayaking to an island. We were inexperienced kayakers, and had a young dog with us, whom we had no idea how she would handle the boat, the water, the birds on the water... Well she was a champ, and despite having trouble finding a landing spot, we safely made it to the cache where there was no fear of muggles hearing us yell "FOUND IT!" Apparently I was hooked, because that was 2012!

I think it would be cool to paddle part of the way as well. I don't have an off road vehicle, and I seldom have anyone with me as my schedule is weird! I organised a group of cachers to tackle this cache together in 2017. We had a safety crew on top and made sure there had been no rain and none predicted. We walked several km up into these tunnels to find waymarks and the last walk took us through thigh deep water to gz. Lots of spiders, crocodiles (haha joking), mud and climbs got us to the end. T5 caches offer a different way to geocache, but often, it only requires a boat or a ladder to reach them. What I find challenging are T4.5 caches, where you have to swim or climb yourself because the PZ is too far from the parking to bring a tool. I vividly recall a cache I found while skiing at Sun Peaks in 2018, hidden beneath a pine tree down an expert trail. I had to dig my way through the powder snow to get near the trunk and check where the CO might have put the container. Great FTF also!

I don't know if this one is classified as an extreme geocache but it is an amazing spot. It is on top of Gros Morne Mountain in Newfoundland. The views up there are truly amazing.
