The ruger#1 had to undergo extensive work just to shoot 1" at 100 yards. Picked up cva 35 whelen and 4570, they shoot everything under 1". I hope the return of t.c they figure out barrel quality.

It’s funny when people think it’s very important to have camouflage on, except for where their bright orange vest is…. About 20 years ago I was squirrel hunting on a WMA when a 6 point Buck walked out about 20 yards in front of me. Ironically enough it was opening day of deer rifle season in the state, but was a small game only day on that WMA so I didn’t need orange. It was hardwood forest but no undergrowth. There was nothing between us. I was standing up in the wide open but was still since I was looking up in the trees. I was wearing an old military pattern woodland camo long sleeve T shirt, just because. But with blue jeans and a red baseball cap. That deer looked at me a bunch of times but I stayed still and he kept eating acorns. When his head went behind a tree I sat down. After that he realized I was different. But didn’t really spook. He half snorted and trotted off about 30 yards. Then stared at me and walked over the hill. And after that I did get a squirrel.

I’d keep the .556/.223. The calibers people most use would be the main ones availible. Everyone now has ar15’s plus the military and police so manufacturers will be produceing it. During covid 556 /223 was availible and still not as expensive as most typical hunting rounds. $10 for a box of .556 vs $40+ for 30-30 or any other hunting round. .380 also dissapeared many places and is still more expensive than 9mil. My choices would be 9mil, .223/.556, 22lr and 12 guage.

Hi There, Some background, I've owned 5 Ruger No 1's, 45/70, 375 H&H, 17 Mach IV, 303 British x2, It is very easy to float a barrel in a Ruger No1, I used a brass shim that I shaped to fit around the forearm attachment screw, between the wood and the forearm hanger (the small flat section), this lowers the front of the forearm without any detriment to looks or function, about 40 thou thick, sometimes you might need to remove a small amount of wood at the pressure point. This method of floating the barrel definitely removes those vertical shots you experienced. Both 303 Ruger's I owned had a bore diameter of .314 - .3145, all commercial projectiles are smaller than this, so pressures will be lower as gas escapes down the side of the projectiles, if you have access to a bore scope this can easily be seen as black grooves and copper coated lands (My Ruger 375 H&H had a bore dimension of 0.377, the other 2 Ruger's had custom and correctly dimensioned barrels). Oversized bores and long throats are both ways manufacturers have built in pressure reducing designs (Remember these are military calibers and must function under extreme conditions) I had several custom molds made for my rifles with a diameter of 0.3175 for the 303B and 0.379 for the 376 H&H, both rifles shot accurately with these projectiles. The standout powder in both calibres was ADI 2206H (Your H4895) low pressures good velocities and good accuracy, other powders were ADI2208 (Varget) and ADI 2209 (H4831). The best for accuracy and hunting performance on Camels and donkey's using a jacketed projectile was the Sierra 180gn RN in the 303B, even better performance was using my cast 210gn FN GC from Accurate molds. As you rightly point out accuracy is more important than velocity, for hunting projectile design and construction is more important than velocity, a wide flat meplat is way better than a few fps increase. Barrel time is very important as is temperature, Depending on the ambient temperature and humidity 1st shot (Cold Bore) will often be a problem for non-free floated barrels, tension in the action tenon and or pressure on the barrel from the forend will cause the barrel to point in a different direction as more shots are fired (Heat). Barrel time, In you video you noted a significant variation in velocity from the first shot and a very different POI for subsequent shots. To explain, all barrels vibrate when you fire a shot, these vibrations are in many forms and directions Elliptical, Circular, Vertical, Horizontal etc. Think of a tuning fork, for simplicity of explanation imagine the barrel oscillating in a vertical axis, if subsequent projectiles have different velocities then they will exit the muzzle at different times and at different barrel angles, 1st shot may exit when the barrel is pointing up, the next may be when it is pointing down. Load development is simply removing these variables assuming a suitable powder is used for the cartridge combination in question. 1st Step, Remove all mechanical errors, Mounts, scope, free floating etc. 2nd Step, Select suitable components for the cartridge and application (Hunting, Target, Plinking etc) 3rd Step, Use available techniques to adjust barrel time, Primers (These vary greatly and can have significant effects in some cases) Brass (Even more important than primers, larger and smaller cases change pressure and hence barrel time), Powder (Very important, In the combination being tested it needs to be suitable for that purpose, variations in the amount (Thrown VS Weighed), it's suitability for the pressures being used (Varget with standard primers in cold weather in my 375 H&H caused hangfires, these disappeared when I used Fed 215), Seating depth, affects pressure and hence barrel time and most likely changes the start of the barrel vibrations. Projectile shape, also affects pressure and hence barrel time and vibration as it changes the way the projectile engages the lands(Smooth entry as opposed to a sudden impact)

Remove the sling swivel on the barrel. You just seen it get tight at that spot. It's cutting to hard into the projectile which in turn makes the bullet loose in last portion of the barrel. Plus anything touching the barrel affects it's harmonics. If it didn't then there's no need to free float a barrel.
@sadjmoe12697 күн бұрын
Get the sling swivel off the barrel. It can and does affect the harmonics of the barrel.

Lee enfeilds were still used by the canadian rangers in the north until about 5-10 years ago. Their ruggedness was proven in the trenches during WW1 and their enduring design had them carried on shore on d day by Canadians and British on three of the five beaches of normandy. They had generous chamber sizes so ammo covered in mud would still chamber and eject and they were simple in the traditional British utilitarian style. I love them and their rich history going back to black powder days. Thanks for your great historically knowledgeable videos bringing the 303 to more people outside the commonwealth. It can be tough for people unfamiliar with this rifle to understand why it was used so long to great effect, but you described the reasons and circumstances perfectly.

Over the years i suspect the 303 has taken more big game here in canada than any other calibre. They were readily available as surplus since after WW1 for just a few dollars. Today most hunters here use sexier calibers instead of old surplus war horses. I love using an old enfield 303 as it was the weapon my great grandfather and grandfather used to fight both world wars. There is something special to me loading my own with a lee loader and shooting a piece of history.

one more thing to check is the fit of the magazine box in the stock. If the magazine box is tight in stock it can put pressure on the action and effect accuracy.
