2 LP set was just released ... The CD is loud as all hell ... Couldn't stand the original with blah blah blah ... But ever notice the Music Only is 59 minutes and the other one is 1:06 .... Which is kind of strange all this critique being it's 5 minutes of dialogue ... I also heard he was back to drinking during this ... Not 100 percent positive ...
@FisherProtocol5 күн бұрын
Its less about the amount of dialogue and more about it INTERUPPTING the songs....tie stuff together between songs...thats okay for me...its the interruption...the story isnt good either which doesnt help.

Re: Story about Roger and The Shout. Bets has the gist of the story right, but it was Roger's 50th birthday shows at Carnegie Hall in 1994. Not a charity show. BTW, AT the '96 shows, I wasn't into The Shout, at all, but like Tom, after the fact, it became a favorite. I came to LOVE it.

Fun to hear you all chat about the different shows. My box set just recently arrived (the day before I left for Pete in London). I haven't opened it, yet. While I don't share a lot of your views, I enjoy hearing them. Thanks. (Oh, and speaking of David Gilmour - I just saw him at the RAH, a few days after Pete's Townshend Studio talk.)

Quadrophenia is #1 for me. I remember seeing the movie in college. Great rock movie. Ive been listening to that and empty glass alot lately. Bte, go easy on the zep, its not the who but they still have immigrant song, kashmir and nobodys fault.

I used to wonder why they leave tommy with those two but i believe the implication is that they know it isnt alright to leave him and they know what will happen but due to guilt about tommys condition they leave him on purpose so that it will shock the blind and deafness out of him. Did you know captain walker is the same captain walker from mad max 3 and sally is sally from dont look back in anger

Who are you is very solid from start to finish. All the albums are good with good writing, but some were beyond good. Matt’s right the Kenny Jones albums included. Lastly, I saw the WHO 9-30-00 in Cleveland Ohio. Had floor seats and it was a great show. Pete was feeling good and talking a lot between songs. Band played a lot of who’s next on that tour. About as much as they did back in 71.
@1ericamat21 күн бұрын
Lifehouse concert was great because it was fresh at the time. I was hoping the band would perform Who’s next in its entirety sometime after 2000-present. To this day I never understood the logic not to.

Not to take anything away from Matt and all the other people who worked hard to create the 1995 Who Convention, but in 1996, Pete essentially joined Roger's DST band (which included Roger, John, Zak, and Simon).

Great interview, thanks for this. I like the idea of a book on The Who's solo albums, in general I think solo albums by members of major bands are interesting to explore, sometimes even when they involve outside writers they're trying to send a message to other band members and sometimes they include songs rejected from the artists' main band.

Very cool--based on Matt's post, I looked y'all up and subscribed. I "discovered" the band in May 1982, so I have a very soft spot for Kenney because he was my "first" drummer. And, Who Are You is in my top three albums--I also love the non-radio songs, and think John is the album's MVP. I have a theory that every single Who album is stylistically different--that makes them special.

As a long time fan, their last 2019 excellent studio album, did leave me wanting for more. So i hope, they put their differences aside and record one more studio album, or a live album with new, solo songs or deep cuts.

Great review! The BAM show is also hindered (painfully at times) by the fact that Pete had done a full dress rehearsal for cameras earlier that day and didn’t hold back vocally. As a result, his voice is shot by the third number and he is struggling to get through a hugely demanding set. He made mention of this in his memoirs. I look forward to hearing the rest.

I love Pete leading a big band, amazingly other than Blue Light he managed to not get too much 80's on him doing that, very admirable and him staging a Lifehouse show was his equivalent to Brian Wilson Presents Smile but the show I find I play the most is the 1996 Fillmore show with sort of a pseudo MTV Unplugged vibe and great setlist.

Hey Ethan! Thanks for the mention there! It was a pleasure meeting you! Roger was great! If it wasn't for the rare few cups of liquid courage that evening, I'd have had the same social awkwardness. I'm plagued with it. I didn't notice anyway. You're a good dude.This is a great chat on the latest Pete release. The Shout is such an infectious tune. Good call, Tom! Greyhound Girl IS absolute perfection, Bets! You nailed that. I hope you're all doing well! Cheers!

Regarding the original Who line-up this album is absolutely brilliant. The mood is dark but so was the 1970's overall, post Vietnam war and the Woodstock hangover. What's comical in retrospect is the theme overall is Townshend's obsession with being too old, he was barely 30 at the time. The music industry has certainly changed since then, ageism does not exist as it did in the 70's.

This movie has annoying sections but I’ve always loved it as well as the original album, that being my entry point into The Who. I think The Hawker and/or Eyesight To The Blind was a bold and amazing reimagining of the original song for the movie. Eric didn’t sing with a lot of expression but it still is great. I didn’t know Arthur Brown sang in this song too. I love his vocals. Christmas is better on the original album.

I'm late to the party...Long time Who fan, I remember listen to The Who's Tommy for the first time while I watched the Miami Dolphins beat The Washington Redskins, there was a famous screw up when Garo Yupremian tried to kick a field goal and wound up running for his life trying to punt the ball away...Pinball Wizard was being played. I think I was in 1st or 2nd grade? I was a Beatles fan first, then shortly discovered Zep, the The Who. There is some uncomfortable truths" Joe Perry didn't play lead guitar on Aerosmith's first hit, Charlie Watts didn't play on It's Only Rock N Roll, and forget about The Beatles, there is a lot of smoke and fire with them. Think out it, Slip Kid is one of the very best songs on Who By Numbers and it was only played live 6 times??? I think Numbers should've been a Townshend solo album, because Rough Mix with Ronnie Lane is one of his best? I think Townshend had reservations about recording Who By Numbers, because in the back of mind he knew Moon would struggle with the cuts, because they were a collection of solo songs, and Moonie couldn't reinterpret them his way. And maybe a demon got into Keith's head and said "you can't do it, you're washed up? The poor guy was battling many demons toward the end of his life. I think it was another drummer, because as you guys pointed out, it IS a piano driven song.

There was a good Who news drop the other day, they found a bunch of tapes from the Who By Numbers sessions, masters and outtake reels that were long thought lost. Along with the session outtakes Glyn Johns already had this bodes well for a either a two LP or Super Deluxe edition of By Numbers someday soon.

I believe one of the Krays was the last prisoner to be held for a time in the Tower of London. I was there a few years ago visiting the Regimental HQ of the Royal Regt of Fusiliers (which is within the walls of the Tower). The officer I was speaking with indicated his office and said, "this was once the cell that housed one of the Krays". I found that interesting.

I like the production a lot more. I love Ceverius but the new Tommy blows him away but for me that’s down to the fake accent which I don’t here the new guy doing while singing. Visuals are amazing and one or two new elements really stand out but music is the same as well as an underwhelming resolution for Tommy…but that’s always been the case.
@jdh96766 ай бұрын
@@FisherProtocol You seem a bit disappointed concerning the songs/music and the outcome for Tommy? Would you like to see some changes, additions, subtractions? A freshening up of sorts to the musical arrangements and parts of the story?
@FisherProtocol6 ай бұрын
@@jdh9676 Well Im not sure I can do better but I have always felt like there was a big drop off when we get to the SS part of the story. The Music is always stellar ( I was being sarcastic in my video here) The ending just feels like "ok...from Sally Simpson on we just have to wrap this up" I cant believe Im saying this...But I like the moving ending better with people just rebelling against a false messiah instead of them rebelling at him saying hes NOT the messiah.
