Hi Sara, thanks for the demo about the support spindle angle. I really helped. I have a questions about 3-ply, which you might have already answered since I'm fairly new to your channel. With 2-ply, if I have some spun fiber left, I can make a ply ball and finish plying that. With a 3-ply, what do you do when you have different bits left on one or two of the bobbins? Is there a way you can integrate them on your 3-ply, or is it bound to become just leftovers? Thanks again for you patience and your amazing generosity in sharing your knowledge with us.

Just found your site and really enjoyed the video today. Your camera work is excellent making everything you’re explaining clear. As a possible future topic, I’d be interested in hearing your ideas for living with an antique or vintage wheel that only has one bobbin. What ways are there to store The spun yarn while you’re working on the next bobbin full in order to ply. I’ve been winding it onto a ball winder but find tensioning the yarn for plying not as successful as I would like. Thanks again, great channel!

Hello, I am a new spinner going on 3 weeks. Trying to watch different videos to try to teach myself since I can’t find anyone here to take classes. Your video is very helpful on my thick and thin strands and to get enough twist in the thick parts it makes the thin parts a kinky mess. I have subscribed to your channel so I don’t lose this video. Thank you so much. Is there a way to show on the thicker sections about how much twist is enough to hold the yarn? So I don’t under twist or over twist? Thank you so much for your help. 🥰
@TheSpinningSara12 күн бұрын
Do a little tug test. In the thicker sections, apply some tension to the yarn in opposite directions. If it drifts apart, it doesn’t have enough twist. If it stays together, you’re good. Thicker yarns do not need as much twist as thinner yarns. In a thick and thin yarn it is normal for the twist to settle in the thin sections. Try working on consistency, unless you are specifically trying for a thick and thin yarn.

100%. But worth it to practice building a stable cop!!
@spoiledwitch8229 күн бұрын
This is new to me n I understand it fairly well but I do have to ask two things. One why would someone want to spin their own yarn? And once you reach the end how do you go about reattaching another batch?
@TheSpinningSara29 күн бұрын
Good questions. First, you spin your own yarn because it is fun, you have complete control over the kind of yarn you are making, and you can control/decide what fiber content you want in your finished yarn. Secondly, I have a whole separate video on doing joins. You simply lay the fibers together and draft as if you never had a break in the fiber. Check out the joins video for more info.

What is meant by a 'slippage'?
@TheSpinningSara29 күн бұрын
Slippage is where the cop on the spindle moves on the shaft, slipping from the place you are putting it. It also means your singles stay put and don’t slip out of the cop, making the cop less stable.

Hi Sara, awesome video!! I learned so much from splitting the fiber (never seen this method) to plying from center pull ball (again never seen this method). And your finished yarn is beautiful! Looks like you didn’t pre draft or diz your fiber. Was it easy to draft? Does any pre drafting depend on the fiber? Thank you so much for the video!!

Hey Sara, Thank you so much for answering my questions! I looked up the Majacraft and I'm green with envy. The answers to the two other questions I had were equally illuminating. I always learn something when I listen to your episodes. I wouldn't have been able to learn how to spin ( including on a support spindle) without your wisdom. Thanks again.

@maverickspirit2082 ай бұрын
That's definitely one way to minimize waste. I just weigh out my fiber on a scale before spinning, and since I spin consistently I'm usually super close on the two bobbins. In the rare event that one bobbin has enough left that I can bracelet ply a few yards, I just do that.
@eddavanleemputten92322 ай бұрын
Counting yardage: for people working with the metric system, it’s a lot simpler to figure out how much yarn you have. Generally, a niddy noddy has a known amount of centimetres one full revolution equals to. Amount of revolutions (wraps) x centimetres per revolution = total centimetres. Total centimetres divided by 100 = how many metres you’ve approximately got. Generally, the skein is formed before finishing which means you’ll lose length after finishing. The only way to find out a more precise approximation is to re-wind your skein after finishing. If I really, REALLY want to bother I’ll finish my yarn, ball it up using a ball winder, re-skein and re-do the math. But I will only do that if I’m not sure I’ll have enough.
@TheSpinningSara2 ай бұрын
All my math is done AFTER finishing. Not before. Loops are counted while still on the noddy and all math is done post finishing. This shrinkage is normal and part of why just counting the loops is inaccurate. The actual math gives a much more accurate number. Simply rewinding after finishing will still give you a skewed number because, as mentioned in the video, we wrap under tension and that will still be true post finishing. This is why it is pretty impossible to put yarn back onto a niddy noddy once you’ve removed it…. Or so I’ve found.
@gailsmith35312 ай бұрын
Great episode thank you
@shaunastitches2 ай бұрын
I'd be so curious to know, if you could demonstrate on a skein of yours the "final" yardage by both methods to see the difference. As in just counting the loops and knowing the length of your niddy noddy (how I always do it) versus measuring from the middle, times 2 divided by 36. Maybe I'll give that a try next time I finish a spin to see how it compares.
@TheSpinningSara2 ай бұрын
I can certainly do that.

Thank you for this video. New spinner (February of this year) and I have been able to get thinner and thinner (last yarn I made was approximately fingerling when 2-ply) and I couldn't figure out how to get thicker again! This is a huge help!

I am just getting started with support spindles and one thing I have not seen a good video on is exactly what you are doing to wind the yarn onto the temporary cop. It almost looks like it goes on automatically like on a wheel but I haven't been able to figure out how to do that.
@TheSpinningSara2 ай бұрын
To quickly flick the yarn onto the temporary cop you hold the singles at a 90 degree angle to your spindle shaft and flick your spindle. It’ll pull the singles on as fast as the flick. HTH!!

I recently bought my first support spindle and am watching lots of videos to see different techniques. It’s hard for me to see where you are positioning the yarn at the tip when the spindle is spinning. It looks like the yarn is horizontal to the tip rather than off the tip as the spindle is rotating. But doesn’t that stop the spindle from spinning and therefore cause the yarn to wrap around the shaft?

Sorry for the late reply. I am producing a video, ask spinning Sara, to address this topic for you! Stay tuned!

Hi Sara, thanks for the video. I always learn something from you and you've improved my spinning (wheel and spindles) tremendously. I have sooo many questions, but I'm going to limit myself to two (or maybe three): what was the name of the wheel you spun on? The transcript says "rose" but I imagine that's not its name. Is there any reason you used only one bobbin instead of two for plying? And do you count your turns on your niddy-noddy to know how much yardage you have? Thanks again for all your great videos.🙏🙂
