I ordered the Supported issue of Ply when I started to learn a couple of years ago. Your article on building a cop was the most helpful piece for me in the entire issue.

You have taught me a lot about drop spindling. This is a lesson I have needed for awhile now.

Hi Sarah. Turkish spindle…..3 weeks in. Your videos are wonderful. Plus I tried the temporary cop. (Conquered the butterfly to. ) That works for me. It’s sorta prep, so that the winding onto the cross bars , flows. It also helps give weight the spindle. My next step is to try the final underside wrapping. Every day a school day hey ! Still love my traditional lendrum. , but this Turkish has certainly been a challenge. Needing concentration. Very mediative. 🙏

It soulds like building a temporary cop is to some spinners what swatching is to some knitters.

Thank you so much!!! I read your article but still couldn't visually grasp it, and this video helped clarify a lot! Quick question, though... do you still criss-cross every few ups and downs to stabilize, or is that only in the beginning as a foundation?

The beginning foundation should have no cross crossing. The wraps should be laid down as close to each other as possible WITHOUT overlapping. Then when you spiral back up, that is a new layer and should not overlap itself. Every new layer should be free of overlaps. How spread apart the spiral is is up to you, but try not to overlap the singles within the layer you’re working on. I hope that makes sense. If not, let me know.

I've learned to build my cop with crisscrossing sort of figure eight circular motion. Each layer is wrapped at a different part to build balance. It helps not have any slippage, and is very aesthetically pleasing! there may be a specific term for it, but I'm mostly self-taught, and dont know how else to describe it.

I’m so glad your method works well! I try to tell people, this is what works for me and if you do it differently, that’s awesome. You’re not doing it wrong, nor am I doing it right. The method I go over is what works for me. I’ve never had great luck with cross crossing my cops.
